Review R1: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

Good

We won.

Cumming. ANB. Worrell. Thilthorphe. McAndrew in his first hit out.

Cook best game. Arguably Milera too.

Rachele? Though some shakiness by foot.

Meh

Berry is a scrapper. Not good enough to be a starting midfielder.

Soligo obviously laboured, but stuck it out.

Fog. Very quiet. Needs to do more. But nailed his chances.

Keays, again pretty quiet, but kicked a crucial goal and involved in some crucial passages.

Ah Chee didn't do too much in his first game.

Pedlar about par from what we'd expect from that last forward picked role. If he'd kicked 3 instead of 1.2 it would have been a good game.

Bad

Very conservative game plan in first half and dogshit footskills.

Bond very shaky.

Laird is Laird.

Tex showing his age.

Turray didn't really get near it - but how much production can one expect from a 2nd Ruck with 32% game time?
Tex may not have kicked a goal but that was one of his best team games for a very long time. Played up the ground, brought other players into it, pin point passes (except for one howler). Nope, not showing his age!

great result and way to start the season. lose and 0-4 feels a real possibility. win and now 2-2 feels like worst case which should become 4-2 and we are rolling in 2026 with important players then due back shortly.

that said, ordinary first half. game style and skills. but then the third quarter thats what we are capable of. and its top 4 quality at our best. pies are in structural decline however and have a nasty few years coming up imo. no where near a top 4 team this year (7-10 at best).

still dont think we are quite a GF side yet though in terms of squad relative to suns, lions, swans and perhaps bullies etc

so many positives:

- mainly a good team effort. strong all over the ground and our defence held up brilliantly (against a pretty crap forward line its fair to say)

- stretch - what a revelation. pulled down camerons pants who is one of the better rucks in the league

- milera - i finally hope the MAJORITY of this board who bagged this guy constantly - from early last year over many weeks (makes for fun reading the anger about milera being selected over nank) to even him making ONE MISTAKE in the pre season games (where he was our best player overall, or very close to) and a number of posters liked a post bagging him. i just dont get the sentiment where we are either so hot or cold on players and surprising number of posters felt the need to bag milera who has had a shocking injury run and was always going to naturally take a few weeks to return to anything like his best. Anyway, 34 possessions, 94% effective and 500-600 metres gained - with clean ball handling, good decision making and execution - tells you what you need to know. keep it up junior

- cook - loved it. more please. clearly superior to jones, taylor and dowling

- tt, dawson, worrell all excellent. all top 5 players for us in the elite category now. rachele, berry and anb also good. cumming one of his best games

negatives - laird will need to improve. keays another quiet game adding to his underwhelming form so far this year. max was surprisingly ordinary in the first half. ah chee is much better than what he showed last night. fog kicked an important goal but i am increasingly concerned (over a long period now) he isnt going to reach the level we all hope he can be. needs to be in front and/or out body much smaller opponents. lets hope these guys all lift as still have lots of improvement here

bullies are another proposition again. i predicted we beat pies and lose to bullies who look a top 3-4 team to me, would love to wrong and start 2-0

footy is back and we win against our ultimate bogey team away at the G in front of 60,000+. loving it

Laird is a solid player but the number of times he kills the momentum by going back over the mark or kicking an up and under...
Like C'mon man if you cant do it find a handball to someone who can.
Also 10+ years in an AFL system and you can't kick a low, fast pass...
I found myself asking if he was becoming the new Jake Kelly at times in the 2nd Q.

Kelly's first reaction was always to stop. Then he'd look backwards, and sideways. Only when the umpire called play-on would he actually look forward to see if anyone was open. Laird is fast going down the same track.

I honestly think some teams deliberately allow Laird to run around free because they know he’s more likely than not to torn it over.
Yeah they know he'll have his mid 20s to 30 touches and there was some good in there, but a lot of it either doesnt hurt the oppo or he gives it to them.

Just on the so called “controversial” 50’s..

Everyone in regards to the one with Tex is going on about the stand rule and how the pies players all ran away from the mark.. but Im not sure that that is why the umpire paid it.

Look at the footage… I think it may have actually been paid for Daicos running through the protected zone.. and Daicos even has his hands up knowing he’s guilty of it.. and the umpire is looking at daicos when he pays it..

He's already signed for next year.

Honestly, a terrible decision. There's no reason to sign him early. It's just like ROB's re-signing.
ROB & Adelaide's problem is that the AFL announced the ruck rule changes a few months after his contract was signed. Without those rule changes, he's still Adelaide's #1 ruckman, and the 3-year contract looks sensible - not the horrendous error it now appears. ROB's contract was announced in July, which is late enough in the season to have a reasonable idea of his form going forwards.

The problem with ROB is that his game style has been absolutely neutered by the AFL's late decision to change the rules. His game style was rendered dead, just as the Dinosaurs went extinct within days of the Yucatan meteor impact. Both happened with little (if any) warning.

His 3-year contract is something we're going to have to live with - but it was a sensible decision based on the information available at the time, and there was nothing wrong with the timing of his contract negotiations.

L
Must have hurt the ump to pay it.

Oh, I don’t know about that. A few times he got the ball I thought he was definitely not keeping shape properly. And his running pattern was way off each time he kicked a goal. Cook too. Really disappointed in how our wingpersons performed, first out for mine.
And?

Care to explain what the point you're trying to make has to do with with me and what I posted?

Loved King saying that if Collingwood had Thilthorpe playing for them they would have won… and yeah if we had Daicos playing for us we would have won by 100 pts. But yeah great point, well made, Kingy.

Don't knock Kingy, most astute analyst the game has ever seen according to WaynesWorld19

having a read of the match day thread and personally find it pretty embarrassing - but certainly amusing. there are seemingly fully grown men whose out of control emotions flip and flop each time we either make a mistake OR have a quality play is just too much. then in the wash up and review they are all skittles and beer haha

anyway no need to name names for any such bed wetcrow poster or others who are predominantly critical, woe is us and feel the need the need to allow their emotions to takeover (downside emotions)

Whats also awesome is look where Fog is..

He must’ve absolute sprinted back at a hundred mile an hour to get back to take the mark he did..

Workrate.

I agree… Fog was a little quiet last night.. but he’s still sharing a forward line with a man mountain and a bloke called Tex that the team still always looks for first and foremost.

When tex retires (end of this year) the Fog doubters will disappear pretty quickly.

I haven’t fully got to watch the game yet but from bits I saw ANB seemed to have some important touches.
Yep, played an important part in the win, only Milera better IMO.

So Toby Murray was given 32% game time. The next lowest out of the other 45 players on the ground was Soligo with 60%. McStay with 62% was the lowest time on ground for Collingwood.

Can we really afford to have someone sitting on the pine for 2/3 of the match?
Having 5 on the bench means that yes, we do have the flexibility to do this - particularly when it's our backup ruckman on debut.

I'll own up.
I was one who did not like Milera's contribution early last year, but I tempered that by saying I thought he'd been cruelled by injury, poor bugger, and was unlikely to return to his best.
I'm pretty sure I was wrong.

Yeah, I loved the win.

Looking forward to watching this game today. Regretting putting Pies high on my predicted ladder though. They're clearly unbalanced and too reliant of Daicos to do everything for them.
