Christian Petracca - recruit of the year? Happy for him because of the way he was treated at Melbourne.

If there is another elite competition in the world where the success of particular teams have the governing body's fingerprints all over it, then I'd like to know.

MLB are pretty complicit in this sort of thing with allowing the LA Dodgers to defer contract payments for decades, so they have built a roster based on money. The “luxury tax” they need to pay on it just doesn’t matter in the end. There are 30 teams and the luxury tax is higher than the ENTIRE PAYROLL of 12 other MLB teams.

They have won their division something like 12 of the last 13 years and won the last 2 World Series, and are favourites again for the upcoming season.

Fun fact though, the collective bargaining agreement is coming up after this season and basically everyone is expecting a lockout. So, congrats Dodgers, you’ve made it so there won’t be any baseball next year.

Teams and fans want a salary cap and a salary floor, the richest owners don’t want that. Dodgers fans are completely entitled and just argue that any other team can spend in the same way, but they can’t, as it’s not sustainable.

Definitely some similarities there, plus the AFL try to adopt “ideas” from all of the successful USA sport leagues.

Early days, and I don't want to pay out on Saints posters who have a sense of where they're at, but the poster that wrote this seems to be on the money. Shows how lucky we are to have Bevo, and after he is gone, hopefully not recycle someone like Lyon:

"We're cooked.

The recruits are no better than the Ryder/Howard/Butler/Jones haul, who took us to the glory of a semi final.

We've wasted our early draft picks... so we have no elite talent coming through. King is done but will chew up salary cap space for most of a decade. TDK is about as good as Marshall but costs twice as much and will be one of the highest paid players in the league for 3-4 years after he is cooked.

Nas will leave when his contract is over and who could begrudge him?

I'd be surprised if Lyon is still coach by the end of the year"

And not one bit of sympathy for them

I actually see a lot of similarities between Saints and England cricket fans Bazball.

As a strategy I think it's kind of dumb. But at the same time, when you haven't had recent success (Saints only one finals win sadly v us since 2010, England not winning an Ashes test for last 3 tours), you have to do something different, something left field. I get that.

The issue is when the fans, instead of going "we're trying something different, it may or may not work but nothing regulation strategy we've tried in recent years has worked anyway", the fans go off with the head wobble as if their left field strategy is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and not just a risky but unique strategy that may or may not come off.

Especially as they pushed their captain (Steele) out and paid a fortune for a fringe mid (Flanders).

Then there’s the disrespect they showed Marshall.

I’m glad they showed that though, no need to give Geelong more of a competitive advantage on top of the free farms & Ford rangers for players and their families.

Geelong were trying to get him for the least amount possible, just like they did for Smith but we didn’t have the option to keep him.

Eight of Gold Coast’s 23 out there are academy picks (Jeffrey, Rogers, Davies, Uwland x2, Graham, Lombard, Read).

One a priority pick (Anderson).

Three they spent very high picks to trade in (Weller, Rioli, Petracca) because they could afford to do that given they were spending 2nd and 3rd round picks to bring in 1st round talent.

It’s so cool and totally fine that a team has been enabled to build a side this way. West Coast are allowed to rot with practically zero assistance from the AFL and their academy is left to produce **** all while Gold Coast have been allowed to utterly cook the draft over the last few years.

The AFL have built this by design. They have abandoned WA in favour of building up QLD, and this game is the perfect demonstration of the product of that approach.
West Coast did it to themselves holding on to all those ageing premiership stars for far too long….now it’s just blaming the VFL despite still having massive membership and fans that turn up every week to these floggings. And yes they have more flags than us in a shorter period of time

Can someone who watched the Kangas V Power game let me know how Butters played? No symbolic jumper tugs or meaningful gut running that would ruin my night?
I went to the game with Mrs Mutt (whose a Norfie) and we both felt that Butters and about a dozen other port players were only engaged for about the first quarter. After that it appeared that Butters played within himself, although we don't know what his body is like. There was very little to no maniacal attack on the ball and body from Zac, that's for sure. He wouldn't have made Port's best players in my view.

EDIT: I note that Zac had 7 tackles and 23 disposals and was named one of Port's best on the AFL website. So maybe my expectations of him are too high ...

Clubs plan trades and picks years in advance.

For example, if this rule comes in, who's to say we wouldn't have traded into some more 2026 picks if we'd have known.

AFL head office are a joke.

You can bet your bottom dollar if Butters was a chance to go to the Gold Coast this year, no rules would be changed.

💯 agree, and for what 13,309 to turn up.
A full Optus stadium gets nearly 60,000
After 10+ years in the comp, GCS and GWS still fail to attract enough crowds/members to be self sustainable.
Approx 9 mil given to them each year.
What a moronic decision to place 2 franchises in locations known for never attracting decent regular crowds.

I know a lot of ex Victorians who moved to GC and bought memberships and attend games with GC as their 2nd team so to speak.

I wonder how many true locals are getting behind GC?

This is why the AFL is bastardising rules to get GC a flag and are creating a monster.

They want to take the number 1 mantle away from the NRL in qld but that will never happen. Having been born in and grown up in Brisbane I can say that with confidence.

Don’t forget Sam Collins as a priority pick. Obviously a different structure but they don’t get him for free, if at all, without the exclusive rights to mature agers.

Tom Morris this morning claimed the Saints are playing Mattaes Phillipou around $1 million a year for the 2 year contract he signed last year. Sheesh. What a serious football club.
What other club was offering him more than $500-600k! It’s not sustainable because Alix Tauru’s manager is going to quite reasonably be demanding the exact same treatment.

The something different should have been to say “**** it, we’re going to use the PSD to get multiple players”. This year they should be targeting all of Jed Walter, Jake Rodgers, Max Gruzewski, Cameron MacKenzie types. Match the offers from the current clubs but then use all their cap space to chuck on an extra $1m for the first year as a Tassie-style “signing bonus” but only if they come via the PSD.
