This is like the negative version of the chicken and the egg. Is there no egg because there's no chicken, or no chicken because there's no egg.

Did the young players not develop because they didn't win or did they not win because they didn't develop.

Just going off our draftees since 2021-23. 2020 was a covid year you can excuse poor development and drafting.

(you'd hope to excuse it because we took ollie henry and finn macrae over max holmes - gives me nightmares)

  • #4 - Nick Daicos (Oakleigh Chargers/Vic Metro) F/S No words needed
  • #45 - Arlo Draper (South Adelaide/South Australia) Delisted 0 games
  • #49 - Cooper Murley (Norwood/South Australia) Delisted 0 games
  • #52 - Harvey Harrison (North Adelaide/South Australia) ACL when looked to nail down a spot. Been solid when in the AFL side.
  • Rookie #2 - Charlie Dean (Williamstown/VFL) Delisted
  • Rookie #17 - Isaac Chugg (Re-listed) Delisted
2022 AFL Draft & Rookie Selections
  • #19 - Ed Allan (Claremont FC/WA) In and out of the side.
  • #28 - Jakob Ryan (Glenelg FC/SA) Played one game.
  • #48 - Joe Richards (Wangaratta FC/Vic) Traded - looked promising but was mature age
  • Rookie - Cooper Murley (Re-listed) Delisted 0 games
  • Category B - Tom Wilson (Re-listed) Delisted
2023 National Draft:
  • Pick 25: Harry DeMattia (Dandenong Stingrays) – Hasn't played a AFL game
  • Pick 37: Tew Jiath (Hawthorn NGA) – Looks promising, one game so far

Certainly you can't put it all down to drafting issues. Development is a big problem.

I think the bigger problem is that only one is an early pick, and we missed on Allan (I think more of a drafting issue than development issue).

So less about development, and more about the (ongoing) philosophy of trading out early picks.

Which players which haven’t developed would have at other clubs, and why aren’t other clubs coming for any of them? If development is a big problem name the players. HDM would be a regular player at the dogs because of their development?

I'd put it down to drafting/picks used.

Ignoring Nick, and not counting Murley twice or Chugg or Wilson who were picked up earlier. That's 9 picks. At that range of picks, three 100 game players would be slightly above par. Pretty confident that Richards will play 100. One or two others might. So it might end up being not too far below par anyway. But that group arrived miles off the pace. Most of them were good runners who just weren't/aren't good enough footballers for AFL. We were asking for miracles from the development team.

You can throw all of this around, facts are facts, that our kids are not coming along like they should be. Even fly has been open with it.

Also dunno why you are defending the development team when they clearly haven't been getting it done.

Name which kids haven’t come along like they, as you put it, “should” have?

And why haven’t other clubs poached said kids?

I don’t think we have a development issue. We had a drafting issue which is why we’ve changed the list management team

Let me see, all of them except Naicos.

Injury excuses for harrison, allen hasn't nailed a spot down. Rest have been stuck in the vfl or delisted/traded. Surely you can see development is an issue? Whats your excuse? or happy to keep drafting kids to delist them within two years.

ok. Perhaps look at where they’ve all been picked and compare it to this graph of likely to succeed or not based on draft range

I think there are three potential issues, and there isn't necessarily conclusive evidence for any one.
1. Not having enough early picks. When the picks start getting above pick 25 and into the 30s and above, they are pretty low probability.
2. Drafting. Picking the wrong talent for the draft pick that we have.
3. Not developing those we pick.

I feel like 1 and 2 are the big factors, but it could equally be number 3 also. I think an argument against three is that we outperform on our later draft picks, but don't really land any strong kids outside of Nick. Finn Callaghan would have been nice alongside him...

I think it's drafting and I think it was an over-correction. We used to use a lot of late picks on good juniors who were too athletically beige for AFL - Crocker, Bianco, etc ...and we over-corrected to good athletes, but they haven't been good enough at football.

Young Westy was dominating the VFL this time last year so young Zac has a long way to go.

I'd be playing him in defence for now. Looks lost up forward. He's got key defence written all over him
NBA has a term for some draftees - draft and stash. They draft the rights to them but they continue in their local league to see if they develop. An under 19 league would be ideal for Zac.

Westy had a solid body, Zac is a development player who needs to put on size and would always struggle against mature bodies.

Still such a kid physically, which is tricky for someone of his size and position going against fully developed adults. Can’t get away with it as much as smalls.

He’s definitely a project player. Should spend the year inhaling chicken and rice

Would been good IF he could of gone back to the Oakleigh Chargers and had his Over Age Season there

I think it's a bit of a development issue that a kid who is being developed for such contested roles is playing in a comp where he has no chance of contesting. Maybe that will help him develop his craft to get it uncontested, but just as likely to result in our next world's tallest half forward flanker.
