Lost: Travis Johnstone, Pick 37

Have we won or lost?

I'm not sure how to feel about TJ, bottom line is the club were sick of him being a bad influence on younger players, so probably got rid of him for a bit less then perhaps he was worth. Pick 8 from Brissie would have been a bit nicer, hopefully we can get a good player at 14 and look back at this trade as a positive.

Meesen worth the shot, don't like some of the stuff i have read about him being soft, but we'll see.

Now have picks 4, 14, 21 and 53 in the draft

So how have we come out of this week? Won or Lost? Probably dependent on how pick 14 goes over the next 5 years

All depends on pick 14 as you say. But for what direction Dean Bailey wants to take the club i.e. building our youth round 23 and under it is clearly a win.

We've pretty much go a first round ruckment 2 years into his development

im very satisfied with our trade week.

We get meesen for pick 37 which is a high pick and not really needed considering we have 3 picks inside the top 21.
and we need a ruckmen so worth the trade.

Johnstone is 27 at the moment and has about 4 - 5 years left in him for pick 14 which will strengthen our youth. good trade for us because he was underacheiving with us.

the way i see it we fulfilled some of our needs. still dont have a reliable backmen which is quite dissapointing but hopefully rivers has a good year and we get a good backmen in the psd.

if you actually go back and read my posts on that subject you'll discover i never said Judd to Melbourne was a done deal, an agreement was struck on a deal IF Judd chose us, i constantly stressed that point, it was a conditional trade deal, conditional on Judd's decision, i never claimed he was 100% coming to Melbourne

lol its ok not a big deal

lost. bailey has dissapointed me already.
bit rough on Bailey, i am impressed with what i have heard about him, benefit of the doubt for mine, club wants to build a strong culture, getting rid of TJ and keeping Miller is evidence of that, i'm all for it actually, build the team from the ground up, with 4, 14 and 21 it should be a good draft for us, i don't care how week the draft supposedly is, those 3 picks still have quality written all over them

Well I reackon we won, any team who has picks #4 #14 & #21 are in a very healthy position **** that shallow draft nonsense right off !!

I'm happy with Meesen and we still have pick 3 in the pre-season .

Johnstone will be playing QAFL in no time :thumbsu:

i like your thinking behind keeping miller. not only could bailey turn him around, but he has atleast got the leadership skills and the right attitude. it hurts to lose trapper but i like the analogy someone posted that its like breaking up with a girlfriend... it hurts but you know its the right thing.

The equation is when I see this:

Gain 1 player & lost 1 player with the boost of draft picks move from 37 -> 14 = slightly win. (That is how I see it)

Remember, we have Pick 3 in the PSD = Recruit best possible uncontracted player.

you started. i posted my opinion. we lost. we could have gone after a proven player.
If we wanted proven players we would have kept TJ.

Bailey has made a tough stance and we now should go forward to try and win a premiership in the years between 2010 and 2012. Just unfortunate for Neitz, Yze, Whelan and White who wont be there and others like Robbo, Green and Bruce who will be getting on if we do make it.

see this is the problem. we had one bad season, after making the finals 3 years in a row. where did the cats finish in 06? i want the cup in 08.

Then you are delusional, Geelong had the talent and proved it with narrow loses to Brisbane in a prelim in 04 and Sydney in a semi in 05. Neale Daniher had his run and without a genuine spine and with players not giving 100% we made the finals in 04-06 but we were never close to the flag. This trade period starts Dean Bailey go and where we finish in the next year is irrelevant because in a few years McLean, Sylvia, Bell, Davey, Dunn, Bate, Bartram, Petterd, Rivers, Frawley and this years draft and so on will make a formidable team.

Interesting to note that we now pick behind WC each of our first three picks, WC 3 Mel 4, WC 13 Mel 14, WC 20 Mel 21, hopefully they dont take every player we want at each pick

Looking for BPA, but with at least 1 KP and 1 Mid, other one being whichever is best

Agreed for the first time in a while we are in a healthy trade position.
Meesen should be a good pick up and trading Travis should be a message to all of our players that tardiness is no longer acceptable in the Red and the Blue.

i love all the moves made by "bails" absolutely love it............and the rest of u melbourne supporters who are in so called "mourning" in losing travis johnstone, i can promise u wont be saying this in 4 years time when we have a young good team who may challenge for a premiership.
Lets face it if u think this list we have now is going to win us a premiership u are delusional, and if u think we can change this list over night again u are delisional.........it takes time to change all certain things that this club does not have and needs to win premierships........we need a backline, we need pace, we need work ethic and most of all we deperatley need some "tough love" and some sort of culture. Bailey has put those steps in place and i can personally say at least i feel like we have a plan put in place and we are heading in some sort of direction for a change!!
U cant keep wacking band aids over a deep gash and thats exactley what we have been doing for the past 15 years, just been middle of the rung team who is around the mark but never quite good or consitant enough to be in the top echelon.
I want to win as much as the next melbourne supporter, but we need direction and culture and i think in the long term that is what will take us from being good to being great.
No wonder we havent won a premiership in so long, the majority of melbourne supporters would rather us be constantley mediocre than having a few hard years at the bottom of the ladder. There will be some tough times but we must stick it out and not band wagon as some of us have done in the past, for once i really can see light at the end of the tunnel........ im sick of being good i want us to be great!!!:thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

dee-molishon would it ever hurt you to write in sentences. Also I don't think this trade week necessarily dooms us to be stuck in the bottom four for the next few years. Getting rid of TJ and the likes of Godfrey, Ward and Brown may set us back a bit, but when we do start heading up the ladder with quality young players getting experience together we should have enough momentum to atleast make the top 4, not just a semi final.
