    Autopsy AFL 2026 Round 4 - Eagles v Swans Sat April 4th 7:35pm AEDT/4:35pm (OS)

Yeah, I suspect "just missing out on the top 10" is unlikely to be a major disappointment for a typical football fan.

2025 Non AFL Attendance, TV, Finance etc

Big crowd at Greensborough Football Club yesterday (v Eltham). Apparently Tom Mitchell's first game for the club. Photo posted by a local MP.

    Jumper clash fails

Exactly. The whole point an across-the-board rule that says the away needs to avoid a clash is that it establishes a single point of responsibility. Move away from that, and you inevitably end up with blame-shifting, with clubs insisting that the other team should have done X,Y and Z to avoid this.

Reasons for disenchantment / lower attendance

There was a night game at the Docklands on Saturday (Essendon v NM). I assume the early start to St Kilda v Brisbane was to allow them to clear the stadium in time.

    Jumper clash fails

No, that really isn't the solution. It's not the AFL's place to nominate anything. Its job should simply be to approve the strips clubs propose. So far as home club shorts go, the only scenario where I'm okay with the AFL insisting on what they wear is where clubs actively choose multiple home...

    Jumper clash fails

Yep. That's my understanding. The AFL won't have any explanation for the above anomaly, since apparently they make no effort to enforce a clash policy: there's no-one in the AFL whose job description includes to ensure that clashes don't happen. There's a just a vague rule that the away club is...

    Jumper clash fails

Home club gets to choose home club's strip. Away club is required to wear a strip that doesn't clash with home club's strip. The end.

    Jumper clash fails

To demonstrate how the above approach would work: AFL to Brisbane Lions: Unfortunately, the strip you've nominated in your away game against St Kilda clashes with their home strip. Therefore, that strip is not approved. Please nominate an alternative strip that doesn't clash". Continue the...

Preach, brother. And no, it's not a small thing.

Reasons for disenchantment / lower attendance

Yeah, the thing that get me is just how quickly football fans have adopted the AFL’s preferred terminology (despite professing an intense dislike for the AFL i.e. the administrative body). This practice of referring to the sport as “AFL” was initiated as recently as the later 90s/early 2000s...

Reasons for disenchantment / lower attendance

Yeah, fair dues. I noticed this at last week's game. Well done Hawthorn. Are there any other clubs holding out and refusing to play sh!t music after every goal? I'd assumed Collingwood.

Reasons for disenchantment / lower attendance

You have to label your columns! It's too early to make a call on which way crowds are trending. Much of the concern related to the round 1 crowds in Melbourne, which were below par. Still, the crowds this round were generally pretty good.

DEVILS Advocate : TASSIE+Gather Round is like adding"2 Clubs" to AFL Fixture...so is a 20th Club really worth it ???

I think the point is that with 20 teams, the maths allow for each team to play an odd number of games. So they could theoretically return to a 23-game season (230 games in total; hence, 2 more than the 228 with 19 clubs). Still, the trend is for more not less, so it’s more likely they’d stick...
