Sanders was NEVER going to be the DNC candidate
Clinton was the candidate for this election the day after she lost the primary in 2008

BTW I thought Clinton was going to win easily
Agreed and what a * up that was on their behalf. The DNC were sure that they were going to coast it in with her as candidate and her lackluster campaign completely misread the lay of the land.

If they had backed Sanders they would have likely romped it in, but the powers that be....

Sanders isn’t a socialist. He calls himself a democratic socialist, which in itself is a departure from socialism, but in reality he is more of a social democrat, which is clear by his policy direction. Think more Norway, Sweden or Denmark than Cuba, USSR or Albania.

Bernie’s decision to label himself a democratic socialist probably didn’t do him any favours given the propensity for the US culture/media to totally freak out when the word socialist is used in their dialogue given it is for the most part interchangeable with communist. Then the discussion becomes focussed on that and not on policy. And I guess this is demonstrated by your post given the clearly inaccurate label you have ascribed to him.

Policy wise Sanders certainly had social benefit as a main priority. Free Higher Education (like Australia up until 20 or so years ago, Scandinavia, Brazil, France, Germany), universal health care (like Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, most of Europe, Canada, Japan, Mongolia, Thailand etc.) and other social welfare safety nets to ensure that those with the least means can access services that can assist them in improving their lot were high in his agenda. These are not purely socialist policies that can only occur in a socialist society, but to many they are core responsibilities of a mature democratic government.

Unfortunately for the people of the US, these policies seem like a vile communist plot to overthrow the American way of life, which in comparison is far more dog eat dog. Which in a country with a growing poor population and an ever widening gap between the rich and poor leaves vacant ground for dissent, violence, disassociation from society and the ascribing of societal problems to minority groups to grow. And it is here where the twisted weed of the Cult of the Donald has grown.

At least with Sanders you could see what he wanted to do to improve the lot of the majority. Sure some of it would have been very hard to pass through congress given the vested interests in play, but at least his intent was to try to create a society where a poor person with cancer would get the necessary treatment, rather than be told that there is no care available because they don’t have the money to pay for the meds. At least he wanted to create an education system where those who have the capacity to educate themselves and be productive parts of a growing society can do so without the burden of crippling debt.

With Donald all you get is dog-whistling. A space where Drain the Swamp turns out to be ‘populate my cabinet with rich dudes with vested interests’. Where speaking a lot without saying much is commonplace. Where belittling people on social media is more important than providing millions with health care. And this comes back to the reason why the majority of Trump supporters (and probably Americans to be fair) think Sanders is a socialist. Its because the shouting and slogans and pomp have impact, which then detracts from the issues that require actual debate. Hence, Sanders = Socialist!!, which therefor = communist, which therefor = threat to American values.
Absolutely nailed it.

I've never understood how there can be so many people in that country that oppose healthcare and education reform, and many of whom are those who would actually benefit from change in these areas.

Its dumbfounding.

I think it stems from the vision of the Amercian Dream where you can be anything you want as long as you work hard enough for it. They take great pride in that patriotic perspective on their country so to have reality clearlt show them otherwise is far too uncomfortable for their identity. Really, how is a single mother working two jobs on $15 an hour supposed to get by if she falls ill? How is a young kid in a family like that supposed to make it to college when the demand for $$$ sees them working far too early?

The system there provides little net and a lot of hole.

Because they're Americans.

Clearly the stupidest people I've ever come across.
