so today was the day i decided to have a crack at running under 22 at parkrun.
...here's how it went

1st K - slight downhill start coupled with fresh legs means i go out way too hard. im ok with that though cause im not the type of runner that has any sort of kick or acceleration and im not trying to kid myself that i can negative split this so its go from the gun or dont go at all.
4:11

2nd K - in a nice rhythm now. legs feel good and pace is pretty much spot on
4:24

3rd K - a couple of tiny inclines means my pace slows a fraction but the rhythm is still good and im pretty much exactly where i want to be.
4:32

4th K - about 200 metres in i turn a corner and what has been a gentle breeze starts gusting wildly straight into my face. i'm a feather weight and get knocked around easily by the wind so my normal strategy is to back off slightly until it passes but there's no time for that now. push, push, push.
fortunately after less than a minute it either calms or i change direction again. im not sure which cause right now its taking 100% of my concentration to run as hard as i can.
4:24

Final K - almost there. my legs feel ok but my lungs are on fire. rhythm is completely shot, gonna have to do this on brute force. im sure it doesnt look pretty but buggered if im slowing down now.
200m to go and i can see the finish line so i start to sprint. it feels like i'm moving faster than Usain Bolt but the reality is im barely holding on to my goal pace.
anyway, i run through the finish and double over hands on knees. its done.
4:23

for a grand total of 21:54 and a shiny new 16 second pb. :)

im effing ecstatic.

Great work mate :)

Adelaide marathon next week, goal is 3 hours 50 so basically 5 min 29 pace the whole way

My only marathon was a shitty 4 hours 18, have trained hard but battled injury think im right

Any tips welcome

Should i go out hard and hold on? Or get average pace goal and stick it out

if you think you're good to go then trust your training and just bang out those 5:29's (assuming its relatively flat).
reassess at the 30k mark.
going out hard and trying to bank time is almost always a recipe for disaster.

i would say good luck but you've done the hard work so luck shouldnt be a factor...run well. :thumbsu:

6hr race coming up next weekend, first aim is 50km and anything after that would be awesome. Will be really interesting to see how I go once im past that marathon/4hr sort of mark especially with nutrition which might be a little bit of trial and error (has gone alright in training). Cant wait :) :thumbsu:
how did it go?
can you walk?
are you sick of the sight of the athletics track?

Cheers thats the way im leaning, coach who does my programs has said go for 30k like you said then try to increase for a 5k burst if i can then see

I'd personally try to bank a little time and I really mean just a little. Run at a pace that is still comfortable and within yourself. I wouldn't be aiming for 5min kms but maybe 5.20-5.25 pace just for a block of 10 then see how I'm going. Depends on comfort really.... if that is still running within yourself then I'd certainly be doing it. If it's too taxing then back off.

So Wonderland 36km is just under 2 weeks for me. Will be my toughest run so far. Did the Melbourne Mara last year which is my only long run but adding in the elevation, trails, potential weather and time on course this is certainly going to be tougher.

My running has felt great lately having done PBs for 5km, 15km and HM within the past month to 6 weeks. I also set my elevation PB in June when I was hitting the hills as well as most kms in a month. Did a nice 30km last Sunday and have felt like I've been building strongly to the event.

But I took a confidence hit yesterday. Headed out for 36km of reasonably flat rail trail running with 3 of the girls in my running group and while one is a gun runner I comfortably have the other two covered but they all left me for dead. Not that their pace was too much but I simply died in the arse. Wife and daughter both crook at the moment and I feel like I bit off more than I should. Was feeling it from the first 1km, hating it by the 10th and after multiple stops/walk breaks I bailed at 28km. At that point one of the girls husbands met us for the last 8km and after being sent back by the girls to see if I was ok, I pinched his car and drove back to the start/finish point.

Knee was sore and aching, groins were seizing and overall I just felt flat and listless and couldn't battle through it. Been tired and lethargic for a few days and just hoping it's not something that hangs on too long (or heaven forbid gets as bad as my wife and daughter who are really struggling).

Outside of taking it reasonably easy over the next week or so happy to take suggestions on how to pick the energy levels up and fight off any bug that's trying to sink its teeth in.

Ypuve been smashing it mate I wouldnt let one run hurt that confidence, hopefully a bit of rest and back on top

Wow what a day it was on Saturday!
Started off way too fast as alot of people did but got through the first 2 hours alright until going around the track in the same direction started to take its toll and my left calf and groin got really sore. So hour 3 was a struggle as the wind picked up making it difficult but i think most people welcomed the change of direction at the 3hr mark. Hour 4 was a little better but it took a bit of time to adjust to going the other direction and get a new stratergy together in terms of running and walking breaks.

From then on i was really happy with how the last two hours went as i was able to keep pushing forward even when i was going past a really comfy looking aid station every 400m. In the end i hit my 50km goal with 15mins to go and thankfully my brother was there as he got me up off the ground to complete another 2km before the hooter went off. Official distance was 52.078km, officially an ultrarunner and even more amazingly a spot on the podium!!!!

Definitely a massive mental challenge but really happy with how the last i was able to keep going in the last 2 hours and i cant believe how strong the 12 and 24hour runners must be. Already kind of thinking of how far i can go next year :p

awesome effort. :thumbsu:
glad to hear that things went pretty much to plan and you got a little bit of bling for your effort...i've never been on a podium in my life.

enjoy the recovery.

More injury frustration for me unfortunately. I had to go back for another MRI after my hip just wouldn't settle down. No bone injury this time but a partial tear of the ligament around my hip joint. So off to a specialist now. Can do some running without aggravation but surgery may be on the cards. Not happy.

Ah s**t Rhino no good.

You've inspired me to make it back mate ;)
Haha. It has been a frustrating 2017 that's for sure. Slowly building some fitness back. Looking forward to the Grampians Wonderland Run weekend coming up.

Won't be racing the long course event but might run the 2 & 8k races with my boys. Marking the 37 & 20k courses on the Thursday & Friday though. Great family event & catching up for a few frothies with Miner Boy.

Weather could be interesting. Snow has been falling on parts of the Grampians over the last few weeks.

Shoulda offered to go out for a gatorade instead of a beer.

Great work mate. I've been thinking of doing a half marathon or something but I'm just noway near fit enough to even contemplate it.

Recently lost 30kgs. So 1 step at a time. Haha.
