Rucci on Jack Cahill

https://www.news.com.au/sport/afl/h...k/news-story/97de518464b14c1c05cd4ac3d76d4569

JOHN Cahill never played on Football Park. He tore off his boots for the last time at Adelaide Oval in 1973 as the SANFL ended 112 years of sharing the city venue with cricket barons - and Cahill closed his 264-game career as one of Port Adelaide's greatest players.
But for all Cahill achieved as a player - with four SANFL premierships on Adelaide Oval - that record of significant success falls in the shadow of his story as a coach at Football Park.
He not only guided the Magpies to 11 grand finals and 10 premierships, but he delivered the Port Adelaide Football Club to the AFL ... and to claim the first Showdown Trophy in the derby against the Crows in 1997.
No coach achieved more at Football Park. This was the house Jack built while creating an empire for Port Adelaide.

Wait, he wasn't already in?

There are only 6 individual Australian Rules football greats (plus the 1963 state team) in the SA Sporting Hall of Fame. Jack probably should have been in by now but these gongs aren't thrown around like confetti.

Was saying the other day to family what it was like when Jack walked into the Port club rooms after games, both sanfl and afl. Everyone would erupt in cheers with smiles everywhere. Then he'd crack a joke about one of the players. It was such a fun time. I miss those days.

What a joke... Who else was in before him...

Legend
It has an international and Olympic sports focus, so that's why footy is a minor player.
Robran, Blight, Williams, Ebert, Oatey and Farmer ( in that order) got in before Jack. Hardly a joke.

SA sporting hall of fame.. Not many bigger more successful names in South Australian sport... But I guess he wasn't someone who had a couple of swims by the age of 22 and did nothing else.

How many national or international premierships have Port and Jack won? They beat other South Australians. Win a gold medal and you beat the world. Get number ranked 1 in an international sport and you cant go much higher in that sport. That's a decent bench mark.

Aaaaaah! I thought it was the SA Footy Hall of Fame.

I'm not longer outraged.

Yeah I agree but footy is our biggest sport, by along way. It's the South Australian hall of fame. our biggest sport deserves decent representation...

Well Jack's now ranked with the other great sports men and women who have performed on the biggest of stages and its both as a player and coach.

At the HoF / Season Launch I sat next to Tom Clurey and a few times he would ask me how many premierships did this guy or that guy win.

He was blown away by 2 individuals stats - Paul Northeast winning 10 flags at Port in 14 season of juniors, reserve and A grade footy. Later he asked me if Jack Cahill had won 10 flags. I replied he won 10 as a coach plus 4 as a player. I said Ron Barassi puts under his signature 17'4'10 being the 17 grand finals he played in or coached for 10 premierships. I said Jack could put 19'4'14 and he just shook his head in amazement.

I checked the next day and it would be 21'4'14.

Player
Win 59, 62, 63, 65 Lose 64, 66, 67, 68, 71, 72 = 4+6 =10
Coach
Win 77, 79, 80, 81, 88, 89, 90, 92, 94, 95, Lose 76 = 10+1 = 11

I have a non footy related story about Jack and what a personality he is.
In another thread I mentioned I had an AU Falcon.
I totalled my Commodore and urgently needed a car as at the stage I was married with 2 young kids.
Insurance were taking a while to pay out but I had started looking at a few vehicles.
Wandered into Jacks yard on North East Road and was looking at the AU. Out wandered Jack.
After getting over my hero worship we started to talk about about the car.
Said over and over don’t have the money up front and I didn’t want finance.
Jack convinced me to take it for a drive and I was definitely interested .
More talking, I said I’ll be back when the insurance comes through and I hoped the car would still be there.
Next minute Jack asks for my Licence. Few minutes later comes back with the keys.
“You’ve got the car for a week, let us know as soon as you’ve got the money “
To this day I’ve have never met a salesman who sold me a car with so little pressure.
We talked for over an hour about cars, family and football and to this day will never forget how he helped me out.
The same car is still back home with my oldest and just clocked up 400k.

And another Port ambassador and dual-Melbourne Cup winning jockey John Letts will get inducted.

Edit another Port connection - Jenny Williams who already is inducted but was captain or co-captain of all 11 years
The SA women’s lacrosse team will round out the additions to the Hall of Fame for winning 11 straight national titles from 1985-95.

From her Wiki page
Williams represented Australia in lacrosse and was a member of the 1986 World Champion Gold Medal team.[citation needed]She also captained Australia from 1989 to 1992 winning a bronze medal in the 1989 World Cup. She coached the Australian team to a world silver medal in 1997 in Tokyo, Japan. Notably, early in her career she was a member of the Australian team that won its first ever game against the United States in 1981 – the first recorded loss for the US.[2] Williams also captained or co-captained South Australia to 12 National Championships in lacrosse (11 consecutive wins) and was named in the National Championship team in each of these years.[2] She also received the player of the Nationals Award in 1986 earning best a field votes in every game
