Mark Williams, in his interview on the Port website: “I had Chad Cornes ring recently saying the Power were going back to the future - kicking school is back on - and looking to use some of the ideas from back then.”
About ****ing time

Andrew Moore captained Box Hill to the vfl flag in 2018, won their best and fairest and came 6th in the jj liston trophy despite missing a third of the season. I wanted him to make it as an afl player but he was an almost player. He was always just a fraction off the pace. Give him a bit of time and he is fine. It happens. He never really had an elite weapon to give him a defined role. Good footy players struggle in the afl.
I always remember Andrew's game against the Crows at Footy Park where he ran hard, got the ball, and quickly got it to Boak, then to Wines then to Monfries, who passed to Wingard who goaled.

Kinda related: I’d like to see someone hold an inquest into the infernal sub rule and how many fringe players’ development was potentially killed by it.

Such a pointless thing.
The intent was fine. An unexpected injury would have less of an effect on a game. If they’d corrected it after coaches immediately started abusing it, by making it any player subbed off couldn’t play the following week it’d have been fine. I’d support it returning with 1 or 2 subs allowed, provided a subbed player was out the following week (at all levels, not just AFL). This would give the intent of the rule, where it shouldn’t even be needed many games.

New kick rule?! Goalkick?! Will it make so much of a difference? Why?

Aussie Rules is the only sport in the world that institutes weird and wonderful rule changes every year, sometimes midseason, based on little-to-no evidence whatsoever that it will improve whatever it is the change is supposedly remedying.

The premier example of this was scotching the age-old rule that you couldn’t kick out from a behind until the goal umpire had finished waving his flags. It will speed the game up! Make things more exciting!

Five seconds later after the resultant perpetual motion has seen coaches like Mick Malthouse institute ridiculously heavy rotations in a bid to keep players fresh, we’re bringing in oodles of rules in a bid to slow the game down and increase player fatigue (which itself leads to increased injury).

Brilliant.

Man on the mark at a kick in is now 10m away rather than 5m away and the player kicking in doesn’t need to kick to himself to play on.

Basically means the kicker can get an extra 5m of penetration on a kick, so instead of setting up around the 50m arc teams will have set up further back to around the edge of the centre square to stop teams getting out the back with fast players, which means more space to move the ball out of defence.

When Stevens is talking about efficiency he doesn’t mean kicking efficiency, but goal efficiency - i.e. how quickly a team can move the ball with speed from one end of the ground to the other. Least amount of possessions = more efficient.

The Richmond “lock the ball in and keep kicking behinds until we score a goal” model is over. Most teams will set up their press around attacking midfield - pretty much what Collingwood did.

Ah forgot that there are a bunch of new rules. I'm gonna feel pretty stupid trying to remember everything.
The 6 6 6 rule will be interesting, that's why I am not speculating on who's going to play , when, where, and if etc.
I want to see the JLT series as to how things might pan out and the new system Port use.
There has to be a new system of play .. :p:D

I believe it was Malthouse's Collingwood that actually pioneered that.

I wasn’t saying who started it, I was just using the last team to use it successfully.

Malthouse knew it wasn't any chop against their main rivals, who used a tough run and carry attacking mindset to cut through their press.

The more things change.

Lucky for Richmond, Adelaide 2017 aren't much on 2011 Geelong.

Adelaide probably would have won the 2017 GF if this years rules were in place.

No hands in the back, more room from kick ins, 6-6-6 at centre bounce etc...

Too bad, so sad.

The AFL Rules Committee would turn on their heater when their air conditioner gets too cold and then turn on a fan when the heater gets too warm.

When he got KO’d by Gibbs against Carlton in 2015 and the umpires told our remonstrating players there was nothing in it lol
That summed up the umpires attitude to Port beautifully. Was a dog act and someone should have taken Gibbs out in the car park. We still owe him.

So kane reckins ollie has hurt his shoulder bad while skiing on the wkend ffs.

Hope nothing serious - If that true, its inexcusable leading into a new year after a disappointing season on the verge of being named captain, not setting a very good example and not something he should be doing.

Not something easy to do though, shouldn't be pushing himself that much on a ski that he is putting himself in that position, yes they've got to have a life but they are extremely high paid athletes, not good enough.

Rule changes mmmmm

The AFL are excited about the changes so that's great isn't it.
Mindful of protecting the game's heritage they've brought in only 8/9 changes, corporate double speak anyone?
The defender given 10 metres to clear the ball is a good one especially after an OOB on the full so tick there.
Less BS about ruckman is another tick. Runners and trainers only on the ground between goal signalled and bounce down.
At the moment this is 30sec so logistically hard to message players a long way from the bench.
Are we being buttered up for a longer break between a goal scored and centre bounce down in the future?
It will give the viewer scope to watch more ads. Could be another exciting change to get the AFL even more excited.
After the siren kicks will allow everybody to do a Franklin so tick there.
The 6-6-6 set up is a wait n see for me.

Well the AFL are excited so get on board and be excited because our great game with all it's heritage needed excitement.
Last year's GF was great by their own admission but a lazy 8/9 changes will be added to our game for even more ...
yep you guessed right.

Another swag of changes for 2020?
If so I'm sure they won't be changes only adjustments.

Michael Voss on how the pre-season is unfolding. His comments on the new draftees are interesting. Talks about Rozee's athleticism and decision making; Butters' hunger for the ball and pest value; Duursma's courage and running ability - being trialled at wing/half forward; Grundy big, competitive and quick; Woodcock smart, hungry for the ball and turns up in the right spot.
