You work the year for your company and as the year progresses, you are asked to take on new challenges. Its a challenging year but you have done your best. Then your employer says you are delisted.

Well delisting would be worse. But Polson isn't a candidate for delisting after last year. So i dont see either delisting him or making him a rookie a worthwhile option. Its crazy to think we would want to make him a rookie imo

Small frame, agile, comes from a sport that is very much about guarding a man. Think he has the right traits, and as everyone knows it's very rare for a junior small defender to get drafted to play as a small defender at AFL level. It's not a glamourous role, and requires someone very team-first with a high level of discipline. I think if Owies was given the job at VFL levek for 2-3 years, we may find ourselves with a very capable lockdown small defender who complements our other defenders nicely.

I'm not writing him off in other positions, and maybe he could become an elite mid/fwd or tagger, but that small defensive role is one we need to fill, and I reckon we've got a strong candidate onto the list for absolutely no outlay, which may save us the hassle of trying to trade for one down the line.

Fair points but I want to see him play first. I have no idea what he is like yet

We are really gong to stretch opposition defences with our height and marking power. The ball is going to drop to the ground in a lot of marking contests...

Here's my question. Why?

The reason over the past two/four years that a lot of ball has gone to ground around Charlie/Levi/Harry is because they've been operating outnumbered, often to kicks not to them, over the tops of packs. I'm not saying that this may not still happen - it's a game of AFL, of course it'll happen. Long down the line is a plan for a neutral setup down the field - but these are not the circumstances for a tallish forward line to function, and are definitely not what our coaches would be trying to do.

If kicks are more to players than to packs, and the forward line coaches have set leading patterns for each player, then it is not unrealistic to expect a) more marks on the lead, to JSOS, McGovern, Harry, Charlie, Cripps, Kennedy, Fasolo, b) more contested marking, as those players have that as an attribute, and c) better kicking to a target in both situations, leading to more goals from set shots (provided they kick them) and much less need for the small forward as is currently the vogue.

It's not really very fashionable to say it, but all strategies in AFL can work or not, depending on the relative strengths/weaknesses of the opposition and your team, both of your commitment to the contest and the game, and the relative quality of both teams that have walked out onto the park. Often, you'll see plenty of deficiencies when you lose that simply are not there when you're winning. Are Richmond truly as short a KPD as Cox made them look, despite the Rance, Astbury, Grimes partnership being so fruitful, and leading to them being the second best defence by points in the competition? It's part of why Essendon have half convinced everyone that they could go all the way this year; that the strategic and strength/weakness deficiencies of the 22 walking out there are masked by the quality of the list and the manner of their play.

If/when we start winning, it will be off the back of us simply having too many marking targets ahead of the ball, and the opposition not having enough defenders to shut them all down, not due to the lack of a forward pocket. It's not to say that a traditional goal sneak wouldn't be terrific, but I'd be inclined to say that midfield improvement will trump a small forward's influence most of the time.

I’m lead to believe that the Tom Bugg ‘retirement’ was actually a delisting. Was using Carlton in some sort of capacity to promote his new business. I think there is a lot, lot more to it but if it’s all true then I’m glad he’s gone. I haven’t posted it in the blumours because I’m still not 100% on it all. Had anyone heard something similar?

its a tough gig- most of us could never cut the mustard. But they get paid accordingly sort of a risk reward scenario. I dont think we can get too nostalgic about any player. The club is bigger than the individual player. Has to be.

Seems unusual to me that one can be saying that 3-4 weeks post fracture. I suppose it's possible he'll be fit for the 2nd JLT match which would be closer to 6 weeks.

Makes sense.

Injury could be a blessing. Forces him to focus on his endurance.

Don't think ball handling/touch was something he really needed to focus on leading into round 1.

He definitely needs lots of kms in those legs, was probably too heavy earlier in pre-season.

AFL rumour mill in full swing tonight. Apparently there's more to Tom Bugg's retirement. He got caught by the club trying to access their membership database without permission to launch his business. Club threatened criminal charges for IP theft and breaches over the Privacy Act. He also rocked up 8kgs overweight and all the players hated him.

If so, why cant he play fwd instead of mid?
As Gray is not considered wasted in the fwd line

Why because I think he would be wasted.Very one sided player where the opposition can stop him from kicking on his preferred foot. Would rather him being the player with ball in hand hitting our forwards with lace out passes. Has the speed peripheral vision and execution.

Once upon a time it used to be 1-2 weeks and you wouldn’t see the player again. Much prefer over estimating and coming back early.
