Actually the Nordic countries really can't be classified as socialist. Their marginal company tax rates are similar to the OECD average (23%). Sweden's (22%) is actually lower than the OECD average. Also, the USA has a higher top marginal income tax rate than that of any of the Scandinavian countries. What allows the Scandinavians to raise a higher % of income tax (relative to GDP) than the USA (and Australia) is that they tax everyone at a higher rate (that is, their tax system is flatter, but higher).

Let us not forget that the Scandinavian countries (which are the poster-child of the left and, famously, Bernie Sanders) basically do sweet FA when it comes to military intervention overseas (they leave that to the Americans), which allows them to spend more on universal health care, welfare and the like. Sweden/Finland/Norway/Denmark average around 1.3% of GDP on defence compared to the USA 4.7%. So if you're going to leave 'combating the threat of terrorism' to the USA, it's a little disingenuous to then lecture the USA about the need to increase taxes in order to spend more on society's most vulnerable.

Identity Politics is an insidious form of toxic intellectual decay that has hollowed out any value the left once offered. Which is tragic, because the left of yesteryear is needed more than ever to stand up for workers' rights & reinvigorate the union movement.

To hell with women's football. It is not a spectacle worthy of television and is only being fasttracked because the AFL sniffs a buck. With 5-10 more years of development maybe it won't be such a putrid mess but I have doubts any form of women's contact sport will ever be worth watching. Football wasn't designed with women's bodies in mind and it shows.

Its actually really annoying seeing Carlton posts on facebook at a game and I get excited but then its about AFLW and it is so deflating. Northern Blues have seperate social media accounts so should the AFLW team.

I am pro-AFLW too, however I think it's wrong to compare to 1897. A lot has changed for both sexes since then, which would allow for higher scoring. Tactics, equipment, training, etc, would all be improved.
