4 day break - so back Wednesday I assume.So, the lads have this week off do they?
Alternative Dance/ Chill music group.
In what world is a turtle neck acceptable and that bum belt thing over the shoulder.
Is that Trav Colyer’s partner in the picture?When he originally came back to Perth she stayed in Melbourne - should see a pick up in his form if that scenario has changed.
Good on em - enjoying some cool music with UDL’s. But Dardy’s fashion sense best let that slip thru to the keeper.

They drink UDL for afternoon tea. But come round one, they’ll eat LDU for breakfast!!! Or maybe it’s a late lunch? Early dinner perhaps??? What’s a 3:20pm meal called???I'm more concerned over the drink choice. There should be team fines for that stuff
Well according to the Hobbit its between 1pm which is called a Luncheon and 4pm which is Afternoon tea? Id go with Afternoon tea since its closer to 3:20pmThey drink UDL for afternoon tea. Just backtracking a bit to the practice match - why would you play Sturt - a lightly developed first year player who has shown promise in a half forward role in defence?
is it just the case in Lyon's teams that everyone has to do an apprenticeship as a defender? We've seen Cerra (who showed some real smarts and ability when tried forward), Blakely and others who have real ball getting/attacking flair, put back there. Even Weller, although he got a run on the wing in his first outing was made into a half back.
Just once I'd like to see someone like Sturt played in an attacking role from the outset. The way Collingwood did with Stephenson. Do we really need to grind all of them into defensive mindset.
I have to admit I wondered this EXACT point myself. All I can reasonably conclude with Sturt was that without Wilson and with a heap of "ready" small and medium forwards in Colyer, Switkowski, Shultz, Matera, McCarthy, Cox (for stints) that they thought he was one of the few who could balance up the whites. But yes WTF?
And yes I am also bit over Cerra in the backline, when he is one of the few that can be dangerous going into the forward fifty or marking within it.

It's not, but the single best form of defence is attack. Don't need to chase and tackle if you've got the ball.Defense is not a dirty word. Should players not block for their team mates? Not bother to line up on the mark? Not run with their opponents and just let them be totally unimpeded from getting the ball - or their opponent have the ball passed freely to them by team mates?
It's the main part of the game, you do it at all times that you don't have the ball - or one of the handful out of 36 players on field able to get to the ball (loose ball, or getting separation on an opponent in hopes to receive the ball etc). Defence is very team oriented to be successful, juniors in general have their individual skills honed, their team skills not so much - which is why so many AFL apprenticeships start in defence.
Also, as a forward. How do you get to kick a goal? It's great if you find some separation and a team mate has the ball, sees you and passes it to you - those opportunities are relatively limited, particularly if you are not a tall forward, or maybe there is a loose ball, chances are that you are not the person closest to the ball. The rest of the time, you have to make the opportunity happen for you or a team mate - and that's where defensive skills comes in.
You need defense in this game, if you just let your opponent walk away with the ball, that is another goal that you have to kick to make up for the one you gave away.

We're all hearing you. We are super conservative and essentially assume that first year players cannot play their specialist roles at AFL level.
However, I imagine part of it is allowing them to build confidence as young players in a rebounding defensive role. Get plenty of touches and feel like they deserve to be playing at AFL level. Playing as a small forward and not touching it or not providing defensive pressure could put someone back a long way.
There are lower levels for that.
You just created a bunch of straw men. I didn't say any of those things. I know defence is important.Defense is not a dirty word. Should players not block for their team mates? I'm more interested to see where they play him at Peel - I hope it is in the forward line alongside Dixon, McCarthy, Ballantyne and Shultz (plus Blair Bell and Jackson Merrett). A Rd 1 debut for Sturt was never a chance. I'm not expecting to see him in JLT (much or at all) either. But if he makes an impact at Peel in the pre-season games or early in the regular season the coaches will notice and pencil him in for a debut (just like they did watching Cerra, Crowden and Giro last season - and North if he didn't get injured). But if it takes a bit longer so be it... Dixon seems to be progressing nicely without having a debut yet.
Dixon is pretty much playing the role he was recruited for. Giro. Schultz? I imagine the club's expectations with playing Sturt back was to put him in a position he might find the ball in his hands, and see what he does with it.You just created a bunch of straw men. My point was I would love to see us just once give a young player license to be creative. Stephenson didn't have to spend a year in the VFL or in the backline. They put him up front and said kick goals son, from anywhere you like and anyway you can. He was a revelation.
I don't understand why everyone has to do an apprenticeship in the backline under our system. For some players I'm sure its great but we seem to do it to everyone.
So why not put him in the forward line where he might find the ball in his hands and see what he does with it?Dixon is pretty much playing the role he was recruited for. Giro. Schultz? I get down once or twice a year with kids in tow. You've outperformed me. We don't get past the water slides questions.I went to my first ever training session on Monday last week. Didn't get to view what was going on with the players as much as I wanted due to having two inquisitive kids with me (so many questions!!), but here are some of my notes from the morning:
- The new facilities are impressive;
- Those two people talking while the others are training are the captain (he's the one with the hat on backwards) and the coach (he's the one with hair like daddy's);
- No I'm not buying you chips, we'll have lunch when we get back home;
- Fyfe also spent time with Sam Sturt, in particular they were practicing marking together;
- No you can't go on the water slide;
- Yes it's a big water slide;
- We have some big units in our team, of the 15 or so players to have their photo taken with my son only Ballantyne didn't need to bend down;
- Hogan was the last player out there - someone was hitting tennis balls to him slips practice style. He was looking good & was saying to a fan that he was progressing well (good to hear a positive rehab story);
- No you cannot have a Freo garden gnome, we don't have room in our luggage for it;
- We said hello to a few of the training watchers, no idea who though, so if my kids distracted you with questions I'm sorry;
- The merch shop had no badges of the new players which annoyed my son as he wanted one of the player that gave him two fist bumps (Hogan);
- The player walking around the edge of the oval isn't lazy, he's injured (Blakely);
- If I get another chance to go to a training session I'll leave the kids at home.
Did you go? Did he spend time in the forward line? Was he finding the ball when he was there, or was he being beaten?So why not put him in the forward line where he might find the ball in his hands and see what he does with it?
