Stephenson ran a 2.95s 20m sprint in 2017 draft combine. Sturt ran a 2.96s 20m sprint in 2018 draft combine. Sturt was also top 10 for agility, Stephenson wasn't. Anyone that is sub 3s is pretty quick. As others have hinted at, Stephenson was also top 10 for endurance at the combine (both yo-yo and 2km)... Sturt has a way to go to build the tank. Has the same raw talent and smarts from what I have seen and heard.

Sturt is a beautiful kick. Stephenson a terrible kick. Stephenson knows where to run for the ball. Sturt doesn’t have the game sense. Yet.

Meek may need a Plan B.

I really like having a couple of rucks duke it out for the #1 position, looking for where they can get an advantage or point of difference. I also much prefer having someone ready to come in if we have an injury rather than slotting Lobb in; forward/ruck is going to be a match winner for us if it comes off.
Can we put him on the half back flank to develop?

From his highlights you wouldn't say that. Granted I have never seen him play or train but I got the impression from the limited footage that he is clever but I don't think he can cover the distance to get there as often as Stevo does.

Would you be happy with a season out of him like Mitch Clark at Brisbane when he floated back to mark and offer options out of defense?

Meek is a good kick, I don't know if he has the tank to be an extra coming off the bench to line up as an extra behind the ball.

Sorry, was not meant to be taken seriously. Seems Ross plays everyone off the half back flank...

Yep agreed Sturt is naturally smart on a lead, good timer of jumping for marks and is also pretty effective (although it sometimes doesn't look that pretty) as a crumber. Endurance is definitely not there to go high up the ground and back yet though. But overall it is a package we don't have much of amongst our forwards.

I just think you should back them to develop in their natural position first before trying to make the a Mr Everywhere Jack of all Trades, if that is what it was. As I said though, if was just filling a gap in the intraclub whilst Wilson was playing AFLX, then okay fine - look forward to seeing hkm back forward again.

Mind you, how can anyone say with any confidence what his "natural position" is, given he's played about five games of serious footy. Preseason scratchies are a pretty good time to experiment I would've thought.

We have little depth in the medium tall position, unless Harley comes good? Adding Shultz, Stuart, makes sense. But the
same argument could of been made about Fyfe?
Hopefully in his latter years we may still see Fyfe dominate forward more.

Exactly right. Silly to limit a player to where he has played as a junior anyway. The other thing about forwards is that all of the following are strongly multi-positional, and likely best 22 for us;
Hogan, Lobb, Taberner, Walters, Banfield, Cox.

The only forwards who are likely best 22 that we have that are almost exclusively forwards are;
Matera, McCarthy

The first group of players are pretty much locked in and provide rotational opportunities for the likes of Mundy and Fyfe, as well as Darcy/Sandilands. The second group borderline, and that is possibly related. If Matera and McCarthy could play midfield well, then things could be quite different for them.

Sturt looks like someone who could/should be used midfield/wing as well as forward. He is a project player with skills beyond those needed for a single position.

Re: Sturt, perhaps they were just trying to build his confidence a bit and give him a role where he doesn’t have a defender focused on negating him. From the reports it sounded like he showed a bit more than the previous week where he was criticised for being hesitant. Also, at HB he’s is in a good spot to learn a few tricks if that’s where his future is.

Just a youngun who needs to earn his place, FFS his immediate mentor is Fyfe, tough boots to try and fill.

I like the look of him, just needs more time at Peel, but he certainly has to skills, and the speed to be impressive. Tank and body needs a bit of work!

Peel should have a good blend of youth and experience with the Freo players. A Forward line of Balla, Matera, Shultz,
Dixon, Meek and Jones, Harley?
Plenty of guidance for Sturt who needs patience, but the raw talent is obvious.

Sturt is a better cricketer.
Not 100% on this but I am pretty sure the only reason Sturt is on an AFL list is because he isn't good enough as a cricketer.

As a footballer he has all the tools. Think he might be a reverse Warne (lets hope he is that standard).

He was a junior champion cricketer.
He wasn't even in the Vic u19 team if I recall. He was hoping to get in. I suspect he would have to have gone through grade to get into first class cricket, which he may have done. It wasn't like Sutherland who was in the Australia u19 team.

Champion?

If Victorian cricket is like WA atm I would rate him as a quality batsman for his age. Probably one of the better batters for his representative side but I wouldn't say he'd be close to state for his age. That said, I don't know how bad Victorian cricket is.
