Hi SFA,
At the risk of getting too personal here (I mean, who writes personal narratives into media anyway?), I have to tell you something. I couldn’t sleep last night.
Every time my eyes closed, a horrific image appeared in my mind. Sheer terror swept over me and I woke in a cold sweat.
At 4:00am I gave up trying to sleep; I picked up my quill and started to write. I’ve always found writing to be therapeutic, but my writing this morning was purposeful.
I needed to identify the source of my sleepless dread. The image; so clear in my subconscious mind’s restless revulsion against sleep, proved elusive to my waking brain.
I started by making a list of the things that matter in the SFA.
Well-written media? Exceptionally crafted banter? Correct punctuation and grammar? Team spirit? Respect for rules? Humility? Multiquoting rather than multiposting?
It occurred to me that none of these things actually matter in the slightest. But I knew that this line of investigation was the stitch I needed to pull at to solve my puzzle.
So I jumped on Bigfooty and started looking at posts from the past 24hrs. That’s where I saw this image:
It’s now clear to me that avatars matter. You see, I foolishly made an ‘avatar bet’ with U2tigers. I lost, and my penance is a week of torment.
It has led me to a belief that avatars actually do matter. They form a poster’s persona; they are a virtual window to a carefully curated but fake soul. They form our subconscious impression of a poster, for better or for worse.
So I thought I’d ask the league to consider the many avatars we see every day in the SFA.
Beyond mine (which is currently the worst in the league by the length of the Flemington straight), which do you believe to be the worst avatar in the league?
Nominate the league’s worst avatars in the thread below (don’t include those that are the result of an av bet) and I’ll add a poll so we can vote on the league’s very worst avatar. We can then try to lobby for the perpetrator to upgrade/improve for the greater good.
Because if I’ve learnt anything this week, it’s that Bono is a dick.
Oh, and that avatars matter.
