After dominating the second and third quarters moving the ball quickly, why on earth did we come out at the start of the last quarter and revert to the dinky short passes along the boundary again.
We have a ridiculously young team. You need to expect inconsistencies. The team were clearly exhausted in the last and found it tough to run the game out against a seasoned Richmond outfit.

I swear to god too many of you expect the impossible of a young team. We’re going to see some great patches of footy this year and some horrible, stinking football too. Unfortunately at this stage we need to accept that and enjoy the flashes.

For Walsh and Setterfield to win the ball 24 times each in their 1st and 3rd games respectively, massive. Sky is the limit for both of these boys.

A midfield! Incredible, feels great.

We went total rotation through the middle, Dow..... he does plenty of bullocking stuff, if there’s a knock it’s his disposal by foot and Cuners, has his moments.

Watching this second quarter fight back, head down bum up stuff.

......and Walsh, good heavens, can this fella play.

A fit Kreuz was a huge out tonight, also those 3 missed set shots in the 3rd absolutely killed us unfortunately.

However, if you can't see the positives in Walsh, Setters, Cunners all getting 20+ disposals and Newman looking like an absolute steal with that left peg of his, then you must be flat out only looking for negatives.

Onwards and upwards, also, Charlie could not have had a worse game and hopefully this gets it out of his system.

A fit Kreuzer and we essentially win that match. Desperately need the big man back.

Despite his tackle numbers being high (a product of being led to the ball by Nankervis), Phillips was dismantled, and it made the midfield's job extremely difficult. Nankervis was in and under assisting his inside mids frequently.

But stoked that we got through relatively unscathed and can get the list stronger with each coming week.
Yeah, Phillips well and truly got his pants pulled down tonight by a smarter premiership ruckman. He's a good second string ruckman at best.

Kruze is still a crucial part of our best 22...but still shows that we desperately need to draft a young ruckman to develop along with our young midfield. I'd be dangling our (Cows) first rounder to WCE for Bailey Williams along with change. TDK looks like he'll be a beauty, but he can't do it alone.

And Setterfield with only 66% game time too. Was very busy in his time on ground.

A few thoughts.

After slow starts, I was impressed by how McKay and Gov worked their way into the game. In the future, in addition to their marks inside our forward 50, I think that their marks up the ground will be crucial to our efforts to avoid opposition re-entries into our 50, while simultaneously serving as a launchpad for our own attacks. Gov’s clunk and quick release in the 3rd quarter was a perfect case in point. Just imagine what could be if Charlie decides to turn up and help those two out. No idea what was up with Charlie tonight, but hopefully it’s a one-off, and he obviously has some credit in the bank ... albeit a fair chunk less than he had before tonight.

Although Walsh was caught out a few times by the increase in intensity from the JLT, I felt that overall he was excellent, showing a work ethic and composure (eg the handball for Murph’s goal) that bode well for both his and our future. Cripps should sleep a little easier knowing that this kid will be around to share the load in the years ahead, and he should sleep easier still with Setter looking the part, and Dow and Cunners hopefully continuing to improve.

Imo, Weitering continued with his promising form from the pre-season, and defence-wise I was also impressed by Newman’s game - very solid, with a touch of mongrel - and by Simmo and Daisy’s consistent efforts. I must admit to always feeling nervous where Jones is concerned, but he’s more solution than problem, providing he plays within his limits. I thought Garlett was very disappointing, and to have any future in the AFL he quickly needs to learn to hit the contest with far more ferocity than he showed tonight. I continue to feel underwhelmed and a tad anxious (but not clinically) about Plow.

Fish was far from his best, but for mine he still did some good things, and for a young player I love how he refuses to hide, and how he’s prepared to take the kind of risks that can break open a game. Okay, most of those risks didn’t pay dividends tonight, but in part that was due to him falling foul of some pretty good tackles from the more seasoned Tiges.

Up forward, Fas was obviously underdone, but will hopefully be better for the run (dial a cliche). Gibbons looked very blue collar, but we know from the JLT that there are definitely some white tips on the collar, so I hold out hope moving forward as he adjusts to AFL footy. The role that the coaches gave to Ed seemed dubious to me, to say the least, as it failed to capitalise on his strengths, while simultaneously exposing his weaknesses ... I would have loved to see the ball in someone else’s hands on the 2 or 3 occasions when he was around the 50 metre arc in the third term.

Anyway, in my opinion the second and third quarters give us profound reason to hope, even if the inexplicable “no show” in the final quarter gives us legitimate reason to fear. To be honest, l’m not sure we’ve reached the “tipping point” in our rebuild just yet, but I think we might do before this season is out.

We played last year's minor premiers. We won the 2nd and 3rd quarters. We finished last, last year. We came back within 13 points in the 3rd, after being held goalless in the 1st. We're still a terribly young team.

Yes, there were many frustrating times in the game, but onto better things!

Am I the only one who remembers Charlie going down early last week... he played till quarter time... the kid played out of his skin last year and has one bad game this year and we want to hang him out to dry... get real guys... Played like a guy on one leg tonight which he was...
let’s just hope all these doom and gloom people are just as supportive when things are going well ffs...

A absolutely love Weitbots passing game ..FMD there bullets accurate passes

Same shit, different round...forward line flipping atrocious.

Charlie couldn’t catch a cold, Fasolo couldn’t get near it, McGovern out of breath halfway to the ball and our smalls were witches hats.

FFS, if this isn’t SOS’s order of preference in this years trade and draft period then he needs to be sacked:

1. Gun goal kicking small forward
2. Gun small forward who works his backside off has pace and puts the fear of god into backman.

(I’ll take Cyril, and a spud like castagna!!)

3. Gun ruckman, I can handle waiting a year and going all in on Grundy
4. A small backman that has first thought of making sure his opponent and other opp small forwards get 2 bits of sweet FA to dine on.

Btw, thought Cuningham was bloody good tonight and the senior guys really stood up. Cripps was flipping immense, probably classed as senior even though he’s not.

Can we please stop with this stupid notion that Ed is a forward, Cotchin/Dusty and Lambert won them the game....it’s ok to have a tagging terrier in the middle that can run further than forest gump , really it is!!

Simply didn't turn up in the first...as bad as any quarter from any of the bad old days. Movement was lacking to the point of comical.

Held sway for much of the second and third, but they were scrambled goals...we really didn't manufacture anything. Nothing about our new look forward set up will make opposition defenders quake just yet.

Walsh and Setters great, 'almost' games from Dow, SPS and Fish.

There ability to run in numbers and gain vast amounts of territory quickly was the tale of the tape...lightning rebound out of defense. Houli, Edwards and of course Cotchin cut us to shreds.

Wear the L and move on, though I'm not quite as heartened as many seem to be. The first quarter may have saved us a thumping...Tiges clearly knocked it back a gear thereafter.

There's a few opposition supporters who rate some of our players more than a few of our own supporters. It's quite a weird thing for me. Have to recognise what you have before you lose it I think.
cheers, joni......

I love how every shit Carlton supporter decides to come out the first game of the year if we start to lose... really... we are young... we won two games last year... it’s not going to change over 1 pre season... but seriously have a think about your comments before you post... derogatory comments cannot help and makes me think if you are really Carlton supporters or just trolls trying to bring us down... might be a smart thought of us all to sign up as opposition members and post that they are shit, to see if we can bring their confidence down... but really!!!
If I told everyone we would win the possession count, and most of the stats that count in afl but not the game would we have taken that...? I think so...
As for Charlie... wow do we have short memories... what happened last we when we played the pies in the practice game??? Did he not come off early because of an injury concern... clearly he was hurt but still a big focus for the tigers to have Rance on him all night... he will get better... Most important thing tonight is no injuries and being able to play together again... team cohesion is very very important...!!!!!!!!!!!
What I cannot stand though is the commentary... Richmond this Richmond that every call from the umps is wright cause it went Richmond’s way... anyone would have thought it was Richmond’s home game...

Great post and spot on👍🏽

I went with little expectation and at quarter time, my pessimistic expectations seemed accurate.. super super happy with how we played out the game.. even the last when we looked cooked, we dug in and didn’t let the game blow out when it easily could have like it did on so many occasions last year.

Loves - Crippa, goes without saying
Weiters - best game for the club, didn’t lose a contest all night
Newman - looks exactly what we need.
McKay - Work rate and footy smarts exceptional.
Walsh - So so impressive, look for rising star.
Setterfield - looks a player.

Negatives... wish there were none but,
Garlett - just looks so far away from being an AFL standard player
Gibbons - had hoped for more impact, give him another shot.
Charlie - I thought he looked rough in the JLT, and looked worse today, dropping basic chest marks and looked out of sorts,
