Newman. What a find. Got some mongrel and grunt. My best player all things considered. Make no mistake folks. We saw the nucleus of a very good side last night. There's a lot of kinks and creases to be sorted out but the foundation is there. At times we were taking it up to them and some. It was only their experience and game time as a unit that got us. Put the similar numbers into our group and we will be a force come 18 months or so. And for most us it's going to be super sweet having gone thru the doldrums. The usual suspects were onto me this morning via the text line. But honestly the sting wasn't there. They thought we were in for an almighty hammering early on, but we showed some grunt and grit to regroup and steady. It wasn't enough, that's self evident, but for a number of extremely young and inexperienced players it was a sound effort. Notable mention to paddy dow. This guy has all kinds of tricks in the bag. Sometimes he fails but not for want of trying. His little second efforts were excellent. And he's bloody quick. Can't wait to watch him at ground level. TV just doesn't illustrate it I'm sure. Sam Walsh.... bloody hell we got one here folks. Reminds me of Bob murphy talking on SEN yesterday about the first time he got a look at Chris Judd playing for West Coast. Pre game the coach said get ready boys there's this 'new guy' and he's ripping it apart. We've got work to do, as every side does. But I think the building blocks are there finally. I'm hoping to get to the Port game in Ade this weekend. Watching us last night, and for the first time in a lonnnnnnnng time. I actually think we have a hope and I'm feeling a bit of trust in the group.

I agree with our first 4 points, and there were quite a few other baffling, if not baised decisions as well, but the H tackle on Broad was only a couple of meters from me, and broad clearly handballed, in my view it was play on. However, on the flipside, in the first 1/4 one of the young Carlton players (I forget who, now) got pinged for HTB when he kicked it. Baffling indeed. Add to that not pinging Jacks deliberate blocking of defenders to allow Lynch's first mark and goal, and the momentum it gave them, set up the tiggers in the first quarter.
My point is that Broad had enough opportunity to dispose of the ball before he got his feeble hand pass away. He was on the deck. Enough for me. “BALL” umpire.

ONE game against the best side. I’m sick of people writing off players, especially inexperienced ones, after ONE game. All these players will really be much better for this game. So much improvement in this group as individuals and as a team
Richmond is a top side but not the best but that’s irrelevant I guess. I saw Garlett live against both Hawthorn and Essendon and watched him v Collingwood on tv. I’ve seen enough to know he can’t defend one on one, can’t mark under pressure, doesn’t understand how to position himself when the pack flies for marks, goes up when he should stay down, goes to the front when he should be at the back, these are instinctive traits that are very difficult to fix. As the loose player in defence last night his job was set to up attacks with his pace but 9 Disposals of which about half were in the last qtr is not good enough. Don’t have the figures but I’m tipping his disposal efficiency was not high by foot.
Fair enough give him some time but compare his defensive weapons to Houli , Vlaustin and Short....defence is not for him I’d have him on a wing.

Not an unexpected result given 6 players hadn't played an afl game together before.

Loved the kicks to handball ratio of Newman. BOG for the Blues for me just pipping Crippa.

Really concerned about Charlie though, looks like something isn't right with the headspace he was in for the game.

Awful in two quarters. Not sure if it was mental or physical or both but we couldn't stand up when challenged in the last.

Contrast to the Richmond players who ran the game out and didn't seem to tire.

I remain to be convinced on the gameday coaching and selection of Bolton and team.

that ed curnow rubbish on 50 was hard to watch - he does that - the uncertainty that throws everything forward of him into chaos.......
We need to use Ed in the midfield. He just doesn't have the tools to play forward.

Was Cuningham and yes was baffling

Just watched the highlights, it is amazing o,see how many Cuningham pops up in. Is going to be a very good player for us.

I'm about to start the 3rd quarter now.

Love that sequence in the 2nd quarter where he threw his body in and knocked over 2 players when trying to release the ball in congestion. Big year coming up for Cunners, he had a very good game, albeit went quiet in patches. Was tracking for a huge game at half time.

The thing with Broad though was he clearly ran straight to the boundary and then we he got tackled clearly had balled straight over the line, I don't have an issue with him not being pinged for holding but surely it was deliberate, especially looking at some others that were paid.

1. The 50 against Thomas was soft, had already left the ground to spoil so couldn't do anything else.
2. McGovern didn't deserve a 50
3. Cripps maybe unlucky but Cotchin got pinged for the same later on, dont remember the Rance one
4. Broad got the handball away, Cunningham got a kick away in the game and got pinged for holding the ball.

No point complaining about the umpires, some days you get the rub of the green others you don't. Didn't think they were too bad to be honest. Not the reason we lost.

I agree... it’s not the total reason we lost... but when Richmond gets free kicks to advantage to ad to their momentum and yet Carlton get the free kicks that don’t really give us any advantage apart from having the ball. It makes me upset. So many times we get free kicks and have no advantage. The ball having to come back behind the mark and the opponents can get back and set up. It happened all night...
Yet every time Richmond had the ball about to be tackled the umpire will blow the whistle for a free kick behind play... what this does is makes the defence stop yet Richmond get to play on to advantage easily without pressure.
Second and third quarter umpiring was ok... usually is when you don’t notice them. First quarter I noticed them...

He was really taking the game on and playing with confidence.

Other weeks his first quarter boundary throw in clearance in the first quarter would result in him kicking a goal rather than just getting caught.

Am I the only one who remembers Charlie going down early last week... he played till quarter time... the kid played out of his skin last year and has one bad game this year and we want to hang him out to dry... get real guys... Played like a guy on one leg tonight which he was...
let’s just hope all these doom and gloom people are just as supportive when things are going well ffs...

I remember he had a calf strain pre-season, but he's the guy on one leg who ran just under 15km. So he worked but couldn't put it together. Let's call this one a blip and hope for better next week.

I agree with Bolts that we overused the ball, especially in the clinches. Too many times we hand balled to a guy in a worse position.

What’s annoying is that we easily won the centre clearances but burnt it too often with a scrubber kick or kick in hope. That’s the lack of poise and composure that comes from a young side.

Actually if you look at the stats we should have won the game. We were only smashed in the I50s and that mostly happened in the first 10 minutes of the last.
