Player Watch #18: Alex Rance

We are about to find out whether all the talk about the importance of following a process rather than relying on individual players actually works in practice. My money is on the process. We have battle experienced coaching personnel with years of strategic knowledge behind them to move the Club forward. And we are blessed with talented back up players. It all starts again against the Pies and I'm confident we have the players and system to win and set us up for the rest of the year.

Vlaustins level headed decision making down back has me most confident, not forgetting Rance is also an off field leader.

Ahhh the blue octopus that climbed all over the oppo forwards backs and wrapped his arms and legs around them like tentacles....

SOS reminded me of a campaigner pissed at 5 am in a bar , trying to fight everyone and swinging like a helicopter :)

don't see why Rance thread should degenerate into dissing someone. Don't forget SoS had to stand 1v1 with Ablett, Dunstall and the leviathan Lockett.

Rance conveys positivity, why go negative here ?
Just calling it how I saw that campaigner...

Yes it was Andrew Dunkley TIA. I'm clearly down to my last six pack of functioning neurones. But I do remember we had a second significant injury in that game and we still won.
Think it was Stuart Wigney who was flying at CHB and had just pantsed Wayne Carey.

Isn't David King just the biggest w***er in the AFL media?

This morning on SEN, he was discussing Rance with Gerard Whately. Whately is trying to get King to say that he doesn't think the Tigers can win the flag without Rance, which of course even though King is dying to say it, doesn't. Instead King takes the soft option and says 'we'll get a better idea next week.'

So I'll save everyone the hassle of listening in the day after the game against the Pies:

David King after Tigers lose to Pies: 'Yep Gerard - I knew it last week. I was thinking it but this result has just confirmed it. The Tigers can't win the flag without Rance. You just can't replace a champion player like that'.

David King after Tigers beat the Pies: 'Yep Gerard - I knew it last week. I was thinking it but this result just confirmed it. The Tigers can win definitely win the flag without Rance. Their defensive systems are that good where the player coming in just has to do his role.'

Rance will be a loss for us (yeah yeah stating the obvious). We have Grimes and Astbury who will continue to be rock solid for us. Vlaustin has a specific role in the backline and can't be expected to increase his Intercept numbers. Garthwaite is still developing as is Balta and hence they can't be expected to play a Rance type game (Intercept, Intercept, Intercept).

So who can come in and has the smarts and body to play such a role? Glad you all asked...Josh Caddy. Caddy is a big bodied mid who has the smarts to back himself in to read the play. He may take a few weeks to work out how to play the role but he may well be the answer.

Go on Dimma...I know you want to.
