Driving between greens and the steering cable snapped. Immediately went into a death spiral...hit a tree with the backend...dislodged a fuel line onto the muffler.
The rest is history.

Rest in peace. May it mow many a green in heaven.

Presentation night at National last night came after a 4bbb social comp with board event winners etc. Yes let's tee off into the wind, cause on the run home we'll hit with it. Nope, of course the change came in and wind swung around. pharq.

Some difficulties off the tee, lost my swing. Putted poorly too. But it was fun.

Well after losing my swing last weekend, I tried some practice rounds Monday and Tuesday (I dont recommend trying to fix your swing when its blowing its **** off). Snuck out for a quick bucket during lunch on Friday then hit probably 200 yesterday. Today was 12C with rain squalls.
Result being I halved my match with a bloke that beat me 3&2 in the seasons first match. Golf gets tougher, but not much. Got to the point of hitting low 6 irons in from 125 into the wind.
Haunted by a 7m pitch that I put 4m past the pin. If I'd got up and down I'd have been 1 up with 2 to play. Opponent won the 17th to go 1 up then screwed his Tee shit on 18 (a par 5 where you could genuinely play 3 x 5 irons such is the arc of the dogleg). He conceded the hole after pitching through the green in 6 when I was on in 3.
A great match played in great spirit with a fair result.

Golf trip down to the Penninsula on the weekend.
Moonah Links legends into The Dunes.
Played awful on Friday at Moonah - greens were a touch on the slow side.
Followed up on Saturday at the Dunes & despite starting in sideways hail, managed to stick it out for 34 points (with 2 wipes)
Found something there but it will be about 2 months til my next hit... so whatever it was will be gone by then!

Couldnt have picked a worse weekend of weather!!

Yet to play a course and not sure if I'm ready. I still top and duff a fair percentage of shots st the range, mixed with a lot of pushes and pulls too. Ones I do hit well dont go too far, but they are definitely playable.

Don't want to embarrass myself at a course or disrupt others. Are there any beginner friendly courses within 50km of Melbourne? When did people go out for their first ever round any tips?

Can't recommend a course, but I wouldn't be too worried about embarrassing yourself. We all have to start somewhere.
Just grip it and rip it and have fun!

Don't worry about it, only way to get better is to play. I once hit a tree so square from the rough it came back at me straight as an arrow and would have knocked me out had I not ducked. (also helped I was still a young man)

Sucker ended up a good 40-50 yards behind where it originally lay. Trust me, you can't do worse than that. ;)

The boy is teeing it up in Columbus this weekend to knock off the competitive golf cobwebs. Another kid in his age group from that area plays year round (they travel a lot in winter) and will be the clear favorite both days. Told Alex the idea is to just go and knock some rust off and enjoy being back out there---I think I got the...

Hey caddie just show up, shut up and keep up look in reply.

Don't wait - get into it.
Everyone would have a horror story to tell about something that happened during an early round (mind you, these stories are not limited to early rounds either)
You can stuff it up big time when you are many years into your golf.
Park the pride and as Craven said - Grip it & rip it!

Where abouts are you located? Go for a hit at Royal Park GC if its close. From my experience it's a very casual club that will happily welcome anyone. I played there midweek one afternoon with my mate who would be at a similar skill level to yours, if not worse and he loved it.

Or if you want you can travel out of town and play a country course and you're likely to get the entire course to yourself if you're [playing outside of competition times.

Royal Park is about 35 minutes away which is fine. I think a quiet course at off peak times would be good.
Busiest times are usually Saturday and Sunday mornings at most courses?

If you want to ease into it, just play 9 holes in the late afternoon, early evening hours on a weekend. Won't be crowded and you won't overwhelm yourself with 18 holes.

We were all like that once upon a time. the E word. But everyone started somewhere, and if any golfers were like hahaha lol at you you're a hack, then it's an indictment on them. I started off 30 odd at The National. People were encouraging and welcoming. One bloke took me under his arm/wing who was off 4. Patient and provided guidance.

Worst thing to so when on course is rush. If you rush, and starting out, you're more likely to put the ball somewhere where it is not supposed to be. Time, take it.

Dont worry about length, accuracy. Think positive about:

(1) Fun. Playing partner today and i discussed this. He's off 13, he said we all started off high handicaps and cracked the shits when we played badly. But hey, why? We were off 30 for a reason, and end of the day we are there to have fun.
(2) Camaraderie with other golfers
(3) Meet new people
(4) Learn from each other
(5) NETWORK!

Don't wait - get into it.

Exactly. In fact today at The national (Long Island course) i ripped a lovely drive down the 1st. Stepped up and proceeded to shank the ball sideways onto the next fairway. Second shot of the day. lol. It is what it is.

Where do you live (region)?

THe National Long island course today.

Enjoyable. It was perhaps 10 degrees upon tee off. Had the dragon breath thing going lol. Then the sun came out and it was warm. Enjoyable day, a lot of fun, played well. Hope some of that form continues.

Top day for golf. Went out for a hit as well, playing by myself so an opportunity to practice my chipping around the greens as well as the more than occasional second shot after stuffing up my first, haha.

Yeah but check websites as many clubs will hold midweek comps and ladies competitions. As others have mentioned, afternoon and evenings are the best times to go if you want to avoid crowds.

You shouldn't let that stop you from playing anyway. There's no need to be embarrassed as a beginner. Just go out for a hit and take note of basic etiquette on the course. If you're holding another group up, let them play through. Carry a sand bucket and fill any divots etc.

South East Melbourne. There's no shortage of golf courses within 45 minute drive of me, there's actually dozens if not more, just unsure which ones are most suited to start out.
When you’re starting out is the best time to be playing nearly. I won more comps in my first three years than I have over the following 18.

Shout out to all the young Australians having a go this weekend at Riverside Oaks Golf Resort in the Kids Aussie Open. It's on our list of things to do and we got 4 years left to make it happen. :)
