A couple of VFL players is hardly a windfall when you think of Melbourne getting pick 3 for Frawley or their tanking or Carlton’s endless No1 picks plus priority picks. Apart from our inaugural year we have not had a No 1 pick or a priority pick. Not trying to pick a fight as I like the dogs but we have hardly been handed the keys to the castle

No GCS haven’t been given the keys to the castle unlike GWS and Demons. Yet.

GCS have been god awful for years and have been pillaged of the little talent you had (thanks Tigers and Hawks). The AFL clearly wants the franchise to succeed...it is inevitable that they will eventually massage things to ensure that GCS becomes a strong side...and they will do it through the draft or some COLA like fiddle with the salary cap to allow for the recruitment of a Buddy Franklin type. If GCS continues to perform poorly then this AFL help will come sooner rather than later. If you can finish above 14th then it may be delayed for a couple of years though.

Just my humble opinion.

The thing I just can’t work out is how we were so pathetic in that first quarter, we played like we expected to Coast along and win.

We lost to this mob in the JLT, barely got over the line against them last year and we are coming off a absolutely shite year last year. How can this group of players get complacent like that and think they can just Coast.

I think the assumption is being made that we are good enough to be complacent

The last two years have proven we are not so the proof is this is more our level than complacency

watching us at the ground, its scary how slow we are to get into space and spread.
we struggled to rebound and they did a good job slowing us up.

god i miss that rodney eades team

wtf cant our players turn up and apply manic pressure ? when was the last game that happened? ******* lazy bunch of players, not sure if thats down to effort or coaching instructions to conserve energy

Exactly. We apply the intensity and pressure we applied during the 2016 finals and we smash the Suns. Bont, Libba, Dickson, Hunter, Wood, Daniel, should all be leading the way.

Mate we had plenty of chances to hit short laterals or inside kicks and didn’t take them. If we did we open up the ground and leg speed becomes irrelevant.

Bont kept trying to do them but missed a lot of them.

Dunkley flat out refused to try several times when blokes were open.

We changed from bombing the ball to lowering the eyes in the hawks game but did not today and that’s on the coaches imo

Rewatch the first quarter compared to the next 3 quarters, we started the game not chasing and delivering half assed efforts thats complacency not our level, if it was our level they would have given us a 16 goal hiding going off that first quarter.

This group of players have zero rights to be complacent on their recent seasons and it stands out very clearly that big heads is what made sure we didn’t stay up after 2016

Thats the first game in 2 years I’ve gone to expecting to win and win well

IMO this had danger written all over it and lived up to my expectations. I was concerned we’d be lazy and boy were they.

i thought they closed up the space pretty good. make us take our time and slowed us down

we dont have any line breakers which doesnt help when the game is congested.
when we do get into space, we get rushed because of the slow leg speed. ie dicko

intensity is a big issue with this team. they seem to only play 1.5 qtr of intensity. its like the want to save their energy for the 4th. ive noticed this under bevo

We were 20 points down against the suns

If you can’t overcome that in 3/4 then you aren’t good enough.

They closed the space from 30 -50 in front of the ball mate

Left the shorts and laterals that we wouldn’t take.

We could have crept the ball up the ground with open 15-20 mt kicks they left open. Instead we continued to bomb it long to an outnumber.

I’ve seen better coaching IN WRFL div 2

a big factor is we struggle to score from open play. f50 stoppages and crumb goals. we have a one dimensional attack. doesnt help inaccurate also.

Plus i forgot to take my scarf to the game. First time I've done that in 15 years
So it's your fault and not mine. Thanks for that. I feel better now.

I wasn't at the game, but tbh, whilst we controlled the ball for large parts of the game, we just never had a complete sequence where we looked really good. No fluency or period where the other side couldn't stop us.

I think that polished players like JJ, Dale and lynch really make a difference in our squad and stand out. We need those polished outside distributors.

Watching the performance today was infuriating. Even the stats indicate that we should have had a comfortable win.

Arrgggh.

It’s a piss poor effort but as you would know if you give some teams a sniff and let them get their confidence up it’s a tough road back. Especially when your forward set up is shite.

A top 4 team would over come it and win comfortably.
A top 8 team just gets back and wins.
A team in that 9-13 bracket does what we did either just wins or just loses.

Also think the suns aren’t as bad as everyone expected them to be in saying they’d go winless.

I don’t know why people are throwing around the word ‘complacent’

We’re not complacent, we’re just not that great! It’s not like we just came off a 10 game winning streak.

We’re ok and on the right path. That’s all.

A few observations from wing Level 3:
Schache was very poor today, gave us nothing in the air despite multiple chances to take a mark - a very soft game.
Dickson now needs to be within 40m of goal to be a good chance to score, seems to be protecting his hammies.
Lloyd and Duryea both showed the form that made them fringe players at their former clubs.
If Wood doesn't take important intercept marks the rest of his game is bog ordinary.
Richards is hovering around too many packs and now needs to get bigger numbers of disposals in the VFL.
There were many concerns last season regarding our slow midfield and it certainly looked slow against a younger, keener outfit today.
Out decision-making was embarrassing today: so many silly errors which often proved costly.
Suckling and Daniel held the backline together, didn't fumble like so many others.
Smith is on a steady improvement curve, must stay in the side.
Every time I see Bont lining up a set shot now I have no faith whatsoever that he will kick it.
Lewis Young despite being 197cm and 96kg is so very fragile in a contest. I am ambivalent about giving him more games at this stage but if Naughton plays forward, what other options do we have?
The Suns are fit, have a simple but very effective game plan of flooding the backline and when gaining possession, kicking to open spaces to running players and they will trouble a lot if teams who take them lightly - like us!

The first quarter effort was complacency, the next three quarters was our level just without a functioning forward line to convert entries and chances

Libba, Caleb, Naughton, McRae we’re trying all day and if we had more like them we’d have won easily. Toby tried but was not influencial. Bont gave his all. Others not so. Easton’s worst game I’ve ever seen him play. Lloyd and Hunter were terrible too.
