Oppo Camp James Aish (Traded to Freo 2019)

I don’t disagree.

I didn’t think the sky was falling in on Saturday with his game. **** me though definitely have to reinforce that he needs to find a way to actually become a danger in a game. We lose so much opportunity to generate drive by him playing nil all draws at best against the opposition’s worst forward.

The sky will never be affected by his game. A game of footy will never be affected by his game. He's just out there following instructions and nothing bad or nothing good. I want Sam Murray back with his bag of "What was that?" yelled 15 times at top volume with the full range of different emotions attached. It might cost us a few games, but it will be a damn site more entertaining.

Mayne, Sidebottom and Adams are all currently in the 22 and capable of playing a half back role to the standard of Aish too.

I actually think one of our “superstar” mids needs to become a permanent fixture elsewhere in the team for balance, and only run midfield minutes when we need to change things up. Sidebottom and Beams could surely both play a forward pocket or half forward flank, they showed an aptitude for it early in their careers?
Sidebottom yes. Mayne, maybe. Adams definatlely not. He's already failed there and only came good last year when moved back into his one and only role. He's a clearance mid. His ball butchery across half back is depressing. It costs goals - see GF last year.

Ultimately I think Aish is vulnerable and I agree there is a good case for a top grade mid to go back. Sidebottom is the one for me. Phillips can play wing until someone comes along to force him out or if a mirracle occurrs and Wells comes good.

find it hard to believe how someone can be in an AFL system for 5 years with all the gym equipment, time to workout, personal trainers, physios, nutritionists, supplements etc etc and still have the physique of a teenage girl.

Craig Bradley and Adam Simpson say hi

Kicking under no pressure I would pick Aish over Howe every day of the week

This is it with Aish. He's a good reliable kick when theres no pressure. But he doesn't put enough power in his passes (letting them float up) when the pressure is on and the game calls for something better. I'm starting to feel like he doesn't have the skill set to step up to a finals level game. But he may click with greater experience and consistency.

We didn't finish top at the end of the H&A last year, we didn't win the premiership and we can't seem to beat WCE at the moment becasue we don't have the best 22 in the comp. There are a few that will need to be replaced to get there. Aish is one of them. He's not the only one but he's one. Phillips, Thomas, Mayne, Roughhead and Mihocek are the next cabs off the rank. All decent enough players but we need to improve. They can't all be replced this year but it's timer to start.

Whether Aish is replaced by direct positional replacement or moving a classy mid to his role and replacing the mid depends on development of players like Daicos, Brown, Murphy and Quaynor. Watching the VFL finals last year didn't fill me with confidence that anyone is close to improving the best 22 short of those players developing significantly. I'd like to start playing Daicos and/or Brown and move Sidebottom to half back.

This stuff about Aish's kicking is a bit off:

He's a good kick (not great kick).

It's his decision making and courage that holds him back -- confidence. So he makes bad decisions because he's nervous and his kicks look bad.

Actually he is a very courgous player.

When moving the Ball Quick he is good Ball user is when he has time to think his Descion Making can be off at Times

He's also learning to play off half-back when really he's a wingman. I reckon in another 15 games he'll be pretty solid.

Not sure about that. A recall a lot of mis-kicked hacks under pressure. I reckon he's a good kick when he decides to hit it forward and low at a bloke within 35 metres. Longer kicks are just floaters and he has a tendency of kicking slow floaters on his backwards and sideways kicks.

I'm not really sure how 6-6-6 would affect him negatively. If anything it increase the amount of running a wingman needs to be able to cover and thus advantages him.

I rate him as a wingman and think he's really important for transition, but think he's a chance of being the victim of only having the skill set to play wing and there being a long line of blokes at our club who are best suited to playing wing - Phillips, Mayne, Sidebottom and I think it's where Pendles belongs now too, even Crocker. Plus if all our forwards are fully fit, the addition of Eliott has to push Stephenson or WHE into vying for that position.

Re-watch the Cats game. His lack of accountability and poor defensive ability was exploited. Selwood and others took him apart. Prior to 6-6-6 we had players off the square pressuring the centre clearance which patched over those deficits in his game. Those extra players can't get there now so the onus is on him. It's why he's playing a lot more HFF. His opportunities on the wing will be a lot more opponent driven as the season progresses. His running ability is no less relevant from HF but against the Weagles we were trading off Varcoe's pace and manic defensive pressure inside F50 for Phillips run. I know what you think is the more important contribution.

I'm not that keen on rewatching the CAts game, but I thought he was playing HFF in that game. In terms of my preference for him playing wing rather than half forward, I think he's really good at getting deep into defence blocking space and then making himself an excellent option to bring it out of defence. To me, that's the thing he does extremely well.

Nah, played midfield just about the entire game against the Cats, mainly wing but also went into the centre at a few bounces. It was after 1/4 time v the Tigas that the shift forward began.

I've never disputed Phillips has some really strong traits, works hard to get back into defence, transitions forward really well. My issues have always been his lack of accountability, he's generally poor defensively, and his disposal. Maybe if he could improve those aspects the team wouldn't need to work so hard to get back behind the footy in the 1st place.
