That’s exactly why I want us to address it soon because it is easier to come back from our percentage now than the end of the season. The earlier we get back to 100% the better
Every game has the same effect on our final percentage though, so it doesn’t matter.

A few of our players base a lot of their game on tackling , how do teams beat tackling? They kick to uncontested positions and play keepings off against us. This is not old news because teams are doing it to us this year. This is why we need more than just tacklers in the team, graham and George are going to find it tough when we transition to a more rounded game plan. Rioli better write some different words on his bandage.
Number of tackles is such a 2nd rate statistic. You don’t stay in a team for your tackle count. In JG’s case he’s too slow to get to ball first. In George’s case he plays like a headless chook with and without the ball.

I just got caught out (as I seem to every year) forgetting that this is the one day of the year that the supermarkets close. Was planning on cooking steak tonight, but the only place I could find open was a greengrocers run by some Lebanese people. So I bought the ingredients for a ratatouille. No meat tonight (or alcohol :'().
Steak? On Fish Friday?!

On JG34, think his reaction time is slow not just his running ATM.

It does for confidence. Looking at 86% feels different than looking at 120% even though there may not be much between them.

Also, 120% early on can be the difference between being 4-7th on the ladder and being 10-14th if you have 86%, the latter feeling like you are chasing tail early on.

The AFL is as much of a mental game as it is physical.

This percentage talk is really annoying me.
Is anyone really surprised/ disappointed that we didn’t win by more than 7 points last week? I think most of us were happy with ANY win.
To say it has been a testing start to the season is a massive understatement ... serious injuries & suspensions to our stars.
I’m very nervous about the Swans & Demons games ... would take 1 point wins in each if someone offered.
It’s a long season & we have to win enough games to make finals (hopefully Top 4).
IF we start playing “Richmond” footy, wins & percentage will come!

Was I mentioning anything about last week? No. I am very happy with last week.

My point is that I understand the circumstances that we are in, but the ladder does not. The reality is that the ladder won’t factor in our injuries when teams are ranked and percentage is a thing the ladder will look at form season’s end. For that reason, we need to start thinking about percentage soon. Not necessarily this week, maybe not next week either, but soon. Our competitors are starting to pull away from us in this stat, and if they pull away too much then it may become too hard to come back.

Let’s start talking/ worrying about it when Cotch & Jack have played a game or 2 then ... not now.
People were even talking about it BEFORE the Port game ... I find that ridiculous.
If we win enough games, percentage either: 1. will take care of itself. or 2. won’t even matter

Agree to disagree because I still think percentage is important. It has burned us way too many times in the past for me to not keep an eye on it. It also indicates how good a team’s performance is for the season. There is a reason why Western Bulldogs are the only side in the last 20 years that won a Premiership with a percentage outside of the top 4.

Our youth brought in from the VFL have the drive to smash teams so I believe that we will make up the percentage. However, we should not just ignore it until our stars come back because we are in a competition and the competition doesn’t care whether you have injuries or not. They’ll just continue to improve their percentage.

I believe our youth are capable to take care of our percentage as well as the wins so that is the reason why I hope they address it soon.

Melbourne at the end of round 5 2018 had a percentage of 88.8 ranked 13th......they ended with a percentage of 131.4...ranked 2nd.

Edit: sorry 3rd, scats pipped them by .2% after bashing up GC in round 23.

I never said percentage isn’t important. We just need to worry about winning games first.

No we just need to win. That might mean that some of our stars need extended breaks during games to ensure they can back up and play the next week. So we might play keepings off footy for the last 5-10 minutes of game instead of chasing 3-4 extra goals. % looks after itself - best way to improve % is to limit opposition scoring - pretty sure we are trying to do that anyway.

That proves my point though. They didn’t get to 131.4% after having a percentage of 88.8% with a bunch of close wins. They had 8 wins that were margins of 40+ points, 3 of which were margins of 90+.

I didn’t say we are incapable of improving our percentage to reach the heights that Melbourne reached last year because I do believe we can. I said that we need to start thinking about making a move soon because if our focus is solely on winning then we may get to a point of the season where it will become too hard to come back from a lowly percentage.

And I just don’t think that we need to separate our goal of winning and improving our percentage into two phases. At least one of Riewoldt and Cotchin will come in the next couple of weeks in my opinion and that should be enough to make a movement in percentage. We don’t need all of Rance, Riewoldt, Cotchin and Dusty in the side to win well. A couple of them will be good enough in my opinion.

I am not against us limiting the scoring as opposed to kicking high scores because that will contribute to improving our percentage. In fact, it is probably what we need to do right now considering that we conceded 64, 110, 125 and 92 for the season.

Whichever way we choose to go about improving our percentage is fine as long as we make steps to significantly improve it soon. I was hoping that we would sit at 105% by the end of the Melbourne game but we definitely need to be sitting at 100% or more by the end of the Fremantle game in Round 8 in my opinion. If we are not at 100% by that game, then I believe our season would not be tracking all that well.

Percentage goes up and down like a yo-yo at this time of year because the for and against are close together, WCE lose by 42 and lose 15%, lose by 42 in round 15 and you are only losing 3 or 4% depending on your for and aga..........worry about percentage at the halfway mark.
