I rated Petruccelle in his draft year, he’s quick across the ground, smooth mover and can kick. I don’t think Schumacher is far off that though, really hold him in high regard. Stocker will come on too. Williamson and Macreadie just need some health as well. If we can get a kicking coach for Paddy D, and some more confidence into LOB and Cuningham we will be good. I have a ton of faith that Kennedy and Setterfield will come on also. Cripps, Murphy and Walsh need to lift but.

ps - only carlton seem to get whacked for losing players that flourish elsewhere - have a look at how those 5 are traveling now..........

The main difference is the Lions didn’t want to lose those 5 players - it was a disaster for them - but the players insisted. While we chose to let go of our players because we either didn’t want to pay a bit extra or we wanted draft picks.

Wouldn't mind targeting Jack Petruculle for next year. He is the exact type we are crying out for

Yeah, as much as I have been pleased with TDK’s progress and I’m confident he should play a lot of AFL footy over his career, it’s hard not to look at our utter lack of quick small forwards and wonder if Petruccelle would’ve been the better choice with that pick. We’d be a better side with him in it you’d think.

Betts went from a great small forward to one of the greatest small forwards.
Robbo's first year with Brisbane was better than he ever had with us, but about the same.
Grigg far better at Richmond
Waite's best football was at North Melbourne without a doubt.

I was a big advocate of Rankine last year and in hindsight very very glad we took walsh, but last night got me thinking... if Rozee in the SA team as a mid/frwd basically got over looked and was a no name behind Rankine because he was so good, how freakish is he gonna end up? because Rozee looks an absolute gun right now and when I watched SA's games last year it was basically just the Rankine show lmao. RIP if only he was a VIC boy, could chuck some picks to try and get him over and lining up next to Walsh and Charlie. Still gonna say hes the most talented player ive ever seen as a junior, but still glad we got Walsh instead.

Cameron Smith should be our number one target this off season. Without having any insite to what has happened at the Saints the biggest change they made was to have Billy Slatter come in as a leadership coach/mentor.

We should go hard for Cam Smith.

Walsh is the player you want to build a team around. Exactly what we need at the moment.

Rankine is the final piece of the puzzle.

SOS has taken a long term approach to his drafting...we did need a talented, developing ruck to take over in a few years and TDK has shown good signs.

He started with KPP's, focused on mids the last few years and i'm sure we'll target a small forward end of this year.

Small forwards can't do much if the midfield is getting destroyed, plus we've seen from other teams that they can be recruited and have an immediate impact, arguably moreso than new mids and KPP's. Eg Rozee, Higgins, Willie Rioli, Liam Ryan...these guys were able to have a big impact in their first years. They needed a team with a strong midfield to allow them to do so however.

Noticed some interesting posting in the pick trade thread, thought I'd bring it here:

Macreadie is nowhere near being able to play a physical shut down role, not at the moment at least. He's not taking Plowman's spot this year, who is a strong and competent 1v1 defender. A full pre-season and time in the gym should see Macreadie firmly in the best 22 in 2020.

I'd love for us to use Macreadie and Williamson in offensive roles across half-back moving forward, both are beautiful athletic ball movers.

There's a lot of players to potentially fit into a back 6 or 7 next year:

Locks when fit (for me): Jones, Weitering, Marchbank, Docherty, Williamson.

Very comfortable with them playing in defence: Macreadie, Plowman.

May see some time there: Stocker, O'Brien.

Exactly right. SOS and the team nailed the order correctly. Small forwards can come at the end of a rebuild and we will likely get 1-2 at the end of this year - as well as 1-2 older mids.

And this year and next year the focus needs to be on winning games and building a culture that makes us into a destination club. Once you’re considered to be on the cusp of a flag it becomes easier to trade in for talent.

Small forwards have traditionally been the easiest to find whilst giving up little, but we have had a lean period since giving away Eddie & Jeffy..

I just wonder if perhaps whilst we are developing a younger one it might be worth trying to get Jeffy back who is out of favour at the Dees.
