I thought he was a pretty average player, nothing special. But the last 2 weeks have turned me around, he should have kicked 2-3 goals today but he so should a few more senior players! But his impact on the game is just getting better and better.

That passage Soups is talking about was brilliant, he was with Sidebottom and chose to go himself instead of passing back to Sidey and he delivered perfectly.

If he keeps improving like this, if we get everyone back there is going to be some tough selection choices and he may no longer be first one out.

Good Point he at least had the Thinking of Wasting time and sure helped at the End but Should of Kicked the 2nd one

Reckon he had no interest at any stage in attempting the first one, knew his limits and just wanted to kill time and put it to the top of the square. Probably what Pendles told him to do when he came up to him too.
Second one definitely the kind of chance he'd want to start drilling to consolidate himself in the side.

100% - and thats going to be the knock. Theres too much depth in his position to not be kicking very gettable goals.

Finishing was awful.

But he wasn’t alone

An experienced player who so many think should be a forward missed an absolute sitter that didn’t have the added pressure of being a match winner!

Our best forwards all missed easy goals, our leaders in the midfield regularly miss easy shots. There is no one at Collingwood you could say I would back them to kick a goal at any time.

I agree, we're a terrible example of set-shot goal kicking.

But Brown's problems is he doesn't bring enough to the table, if he's not kicking those - he simply won't hold his spot.

Conversely, if he finishes with 3 - he's probably a lock for the next 3-4 weeks.

WHE, JDG, Cox, Moore all missed set shots that were just as gettable. Not sure why we're setting a higher bar for a kid who has played about 10 games.

Correct! One 'like' is not enough.

First one he pulled the kick to the top of the square, second definitely needs to convert but was as mentioned took important time off the clock and stopped essendon going up their end, each week he has been lively in the 4th qtr stepping up in key moments, also looking to take the game on and play his brand of footy.

We also have to remember all through Juniors, VFL ect he has played/trained as mid/wing so he is learning to be a different link in the chain and play back to goal. Most goals he's scored would be crumbs or on the run heading to goal, wouldn't have had many opportunities leading up at the ball or set shot, hopefully he can keep building each week moving forward as he's been doing.

Without trying to compare him to his old man he's following the same kind of trajectory in a sense, gav was also a courageous little terrier that came with a slight build that had to bide his time in the seconds & started up forward in the ones.
Cal is also a late developer like gav, so let's hope he can follow the same progression into the the midfield once he's found his feet up forward.

Cal's definitely got something to work with. He's actually quite a good kick over 40 metres, was surprised he didn't kick that last one. But he was composed enough to take a full minute off the clock in the last 150 seconds, so I reckon he sealed that win for us.

He's putting together some good work in traffic with his clean hands and clever sidestep. He kicked that great goal against Brisbane last week, and today he weaved his way through for a shot on goal in remarkably similar circumstances. His highlight was a great hardball get, fake hand pass, sidestep and excellent pass to Stevo on the wing to set us away in the last.

If he explodes physically like his dad (and it kinda looks like he's starting to) then we could have something special on our hands.

I’m not sure why we’d set the bar so low either. Was a terrible miss that was a continuation of his shots all day.

The young lady who kicked for goal at half-time was a better set shot than Cal.

One of you would have noted this but thought he ran down the clock extremely well in the last minute yesterday.

He is playing AFL football, not an especially hard thing to do. I would expect my son in U13's to think to do it. You know he doesn't have much going for him at present if that is what we have to go with.

Agreed, goes to show we need patience. I was in the same boat that he seems a yard of it and panics. But the last two games his shown greater compusure and therefore making better decisions and skill execution. Well done Rowdy

I

Pretty small sample size to assume a pattern.

Maybe. But I still think there's a pattern there. I mean, he's okay -- I have no problem with him playing if he's the best we have, but his strength is as an accumulator and competitor, and that's fine if you're an inside mid/defensive forward. I just wouldn't want him kicking for goal after the siren to win a game -- as it almost was yesterday.

Did you literally just ignore the second part of my post?

We have too much depth in his position, for him not to be finishing those opportunities. He doesn't do enough to warrant spraying basic set shots on goal.

Yes i did literally ignore the second part of your post. I only felt like commenting on the goal accuracy because I'd read a heap of other people make a huge deal of it.

As it's obviously important that I also comment on the second half, I'll just say that I disagree about our depth in his position. We're playing three ground ball half forward in the team currently. I'm assuming that's a balance we want to maintain. Brown is performing as well as the other two. In the VFL we have Atu, who isnt yet getting the footy in the VFL and Daicos who supposedly last match missed an easier set shot with the game on the line, who i assume you would put a line through based on your Brown argument.

So who goes out for Jamie Elliott?

Varcoe. I'm usually a fan, but he's out of form. he's getting beaten in one on ones and is fumbling most opportunities that fall his way. Ask Elliott or Stephenson to play as more of a crumber.

Completely agree - and his STEP is sublime at times. The critics here just lack perspective so often with young players. Ok - he missed a few but his improvement week to week is very encouraging and his kicking technique is sound. His alignment needs work but that very easy to fix.
It is a joy to watch his development from week to week
Go Cal !!!!!!!!!
