Maybe I’m alone here but the point of $2m of salary cap shared amongst three players running around in the VFL is a very, very valid point. You’re never going to compete at AFL level if that is the case, and represents very poor list management. This is the type of stuff the board should be taking into consideration when thinking about reappointments and needs for a broad review.

People on here last Sunday were hoping the media heat would be applied. Now it has, we get all defensive.

I don’t know the players salaries, so I cannot comment on that aspect. But some points to consider and discuss.

If we have highly paid players - are they automatically selected for the seniors to avoid this issue ?

Do we not drop people for not meeting the desired work rate and hardness at the contest ?

I suspect everyone would answer no to both points.

So we have one guy dropped for form, one returning from injury and one out of favour.

With regards to the trade, if drafting was an exact science, it would be fairly easy to select players - but it’s not. If you draft someone at 180cm and he grows to 200 - is that good drafting or just good luck ? We seemed to have a preference for late developing people a few years back, this could be a similar example.

But - for example GWS could have got Cripps, Bont and Merrett - but you cannot predict the output.

Are we doing things well - not at the minute. But this particular example seems to be adding selectively to come to a predetermined, flawed outcome....

Just as likely as not that the source of that article is still at the club. Tough to move on a club legend without upsetting the supporters if you don’t lay the groundwork first.

If it was someone still at the club I would be seriously peeved.

Which article?

From what I’ve read on BF this week we are pretty filthy about what was served up against Carlton.

Is everybody else in a catatonic state of disbelief?

the more i think about it, we are in a rebuilding phase, where wins arnt important, rather player development and experimentation. if you think about it like that, youll feel better

As I was reading I thought "Rohan Connelly doesn't read our thread on Big Footy". But maybe he was referring to the inner sanctum - those at the club.
As someone else said - and as much as I hate to say it about an Essendon supporting flog - this article sums up exactly my angst.
Not being able to capitalise on 2016. I can't remember another equivalent fall from being competitive from a club that won the premiership.
I'm deflated because I thought that milestone would mean the bad days are over.
It's like we successfully reached the edge and then fell over the cliff (which has turned into an abyss).
The longer it continues, the more it demeans 2016 (it shouldn't, but it does) and the damage it's doing to membership and attendance means we'll end up back where we were 10 years ago.
The media have conveniently ignored us, but wait for a slow footy news week - there'll be rumours and innuendo stories in abundance- mark my words.
The time to get more out to the members is now IMO. Nip it in the bud so to speak. They're a bit like a certain criminal at the mo - shut the f up and you'll get away with very bad behaviour.

Nope that doesn't help, although there's a fair amount of truth in it. Firstly there's the question of why we need to re-build straight after winning a flag. Then there's the obvious problem that if we're rebuilding why are there so many gaps in our list management and player acquisition strategy? (KPDs, KPFs, aggressive small forwards, players with good foot skills).

That's because there hasn't ever been such a fall from grace after a flag. Not in our lifetimes anyway.

Or, we're irrelevant - just like the good ol days.

If it was a genuine all-club premiership hangover which ruined 2017 and then questionable player commitment which marred 2018 ...
then we're yet to determine what is causing this season's woes. Have some people got too comfortable? Right now, it is looking like another mess.
