Good luck asking mobbs to work on Sims or make any changes
I certainly wouldn't deign to diminish his ownership of the sim. If someone else is capable and willing to rewrite the sim, and Mobbs is willing to advise or assist, it could be done.

I answered a similar question:

I don't know if anyone is prepared to work on a sim rewrite. I don't even know at this point if Mobbs is willing to allow it. But if so, players automatically missing games through fake injuries or suspensions seems a bit unfair - maybe a sim text line could be "That was illegal, the QMRO will look at that", and we could set up a tribunal fer shitzengiggles?
I'd love to see the sim superseded by a better alternative. Failing that, more commentary lines can never hurt. From memory there currently is a line in the commentary hinting at earning suspension wrath (maybe more than one) - but it's not related to the I&S script.

The idea of injuries and suspensions is to **** stat hogs away from prime positions for a match or two. The game is not supposed to reward anyone for anything - players getting ruck and rover and full forward every week because they post the most is contrary to the word random. I&S adds more randomness - the entire original point of the game (and the league).

I understand it's relatively easy to insert new text lines into the existing sim, but that to add new elements to the game, eg boundary throwins, stoppages, or to alter the way that the sim awards Mobbs Medal votes and records stats, requires a rewrite.

Is this correct?

Correct. I spent some time rewriting Best & Fairest vote calculations a few years ago and it drove me nuts. The missus was afraid to go near me.

I'm getting old and my days of using my head to work things out are kind of over.

That protocol that you wrote in to award the votes alphabetically is much appreciated :thumbsu:

What about if we had a way for the sim to randomly select players positions purely by chance? That takes the stat hogs out of the equation.

It would also make it far more fair for a Mobbs medalist. Currently only mids realistically can win and that’s fine if any player on any given weekend could be a mid. Makes the award even more random as it would be a tight race for all players for most of the season.

Expanding on my post above. It doesn’t even need to be a change to the sim. Could have a separate randomiser process/tool to select positions. captains only need to supply 20 eligible players each week.

Imagine the shit talk and anticipation each week as players learn where they will play

We could trial in SoO or preseason games. Each position is assigned a number and players names pulled out of the hat and assigned the position number they are drawn or similar.

I think it disincentivises people from contributing. Maybe for a round or 2, it might be fun.
On the contrary, it would draw more people in to contribure. Currently you have 12 players tops who could win a Fred. Imagine how many would be in the running if randomised. Not sure you have put much thought to my proposal?

Your positions on the re-introduction of qooty injuries / suspensions?

I think it's charming in a smaller and simpler competition but we have captains that don't even know what positions are called, I'd hate to see people stuff up over suspensions and injuries, in particular the latter as who polices it? We can be a game without being Football Manager.

I don't see any benefit in truth... just because Brad Scott randomly assigns positions to players doesn't mean we should.

Would you abolish the 2 bench players making 18 players on the field with no interchange?

This has potential but it would come with great discussion, and that's if the sim coding even allows it.

I think it loses some of the charm of match-ups and the argy-bargy about most sucessful players to completely randomize where players even start. Rather than have player positioning taken out of the hands of the team selectors completely, in-game moves (bench & switch) and possibly Injuries & Suspensions give a sense of tenuous continuity, rather than no continuity at all.

Instead, teams should be encouraged to switch out players who got a shellacking in their previous 1 or 2 games, based on game stats from previous rounds. Some of our stats media gurus might enjoy running an analysis of how prime position holders fared against their opponents each week, highlighting those who are holding down a position despite being beaten in that position. There could be a specific focus on Midfielders, Onballers, and Mooch .

I think it disincentivises people from contributing. Maybe for a round or 2, it might be fun.
I do believe this too. It can be argued that Injuries & Suspensions can also do this, but it's far more lightweight in impact than an entirely randomized selection process.

Winning the AlfAndrews with 14 goals for the season doesn't sound too prestigious.

What is the perceived benefit? Apart from de-randomizing the game and pruning the community population?
This has potential but it would come with great discussion, and that's if the sim coding even allows it.
I guess it kind of does. You can switch off "Changes = Automatic (Sim based)" in the settings. Teams would still have to choose 20 players but the Interchange would never be used - they'd be dead selections.

Can you imagine the reactions of the simmers, having to make 40 changes every week when simming?

NaturalDisaster would be apoplectic!

No, I don't think anyone has suggested that? Also, see sim rewrite discussion above.

I just wanted to ask a question and that's one I could think of.

Mate absolutely agree with all you have said.
