Hawks tore us a new one in the midfield in the practice match we had with them earlier this year. They were just more structured and composed in that match, although we only went down by around 3 goals by memory.

It'll be interesting to see how much we've developed as a midfield unit since then. If they get a hold of us like they did in that game, it could get a little nasty.

I see this as our biggest test BH. Hawks are just a well drilled and organised side. If we can get over them it will be a great step forward.

Yeah. How about pace?

We are glacially slow compared to many other sides in both the front and the back six.

Although I do not rate Polson as an answer right now, for him to go he had to be replaced by somebody with at least "normal small pace".

The Hawks are going to crucify for speed both front and back. And given they are not real fast themselves, we have given them a gift.
Cmon Laph I think your letting it get to you a bit, the difference in pace between Charlie and Polson will not be the difference between a win and a loss. Gibbons will still push up into the midfield the same as last week and we will still have the same speed through the middle of the ground, Charlie replacing Polson simply won’t make that much of a difference to the speed of our side.

Looking at it simplistically, if we can even match it with them in the midfield, we'll be a huge chance.

Our defence has been superb especially over the past few weeks, and our forward structure is becoming more composed and threatening, and have now shown they can kick a big score.

It will be out biggest litmus test so far this year :thumbsu:

edit: of course we didn't have Krooz in that practice match...he makes a MASSIVE difference to our midfield when he's out there

This has the distinct whiff of calculated late change shenanigans.

Over the last few years, and as recently as the GC game i've seen so many people say this due to us seemingly picking a side that was too tall, and yet a late change never occurred. Not once.

Bolton really wants this tall team to work...hasn't worked once yet.

The ol' 4 tall trick again.

I think after a functioning forward system last week, if we fail to do the same this week we can put the 4 tall thing to bed with a nightcap of bleach...

Obviously there are lots of variables that would make it harder to tell if that is the defining factor, but I would say past evidence suggests the onus is on the 4 tall trick to prove its worth.

Arguably 5 talls with JSOS who is actually 194cm...McGov is not as tall but is more known for his aerial prowess than his ground level work.

Yeah, hasn't worked once the numerous times we've tried this structure over the last few years...but we were just a bad team anyway so not sure how much the talls had to do with it.

Still don't like it, i can't see how it's a winning strategy in the long term, even if we do somehow get up this game.

Thing is it puts a lot of strain on the mids...less rotations for a start, eg not having someone like Cunners rotating forward/mid.
Get an injury to a midfielder and we're stuffed.

If the ball gets rebounded out of our F50 at ease due to the lack of forward pressure, our mids will have to work extra hard to cover defensively.

I can't see our midfield being uncompetitive, I believe we can beat theirs.

Yep. Plus SPS Dow Fisher Jack Gibbons & Walsh have improved and are starting to gel as a group

Charlie in for Polson is a definite upgrade
However if he limps off to the bench halfway through the 2nd qt with a sore knee, I’m gonna be mighty pissed

Agreed...though Russell being in charge gives us confidence.

But a knock in the 1st quarter vs Port saw him miss the rest of the match and a knock at training forced him to miss the WB game...
Seems like he could easily get a knock during this game and we'll be a man down...when there was no rush to bring him back it seems really strange with Cunners and Kennedy as other options.

That was merely a light hearted, tongue in cheek resonse to your "dearest, dearest"

Where does the word "quantify" even fit in your response?

It fits when and where and to whomever I say it does!

We didn't even have a ruckman in that practice match. Cas was left to the duties up against McEvoy and Ceglar...we got demolished in the stoppages and centre clearances. They were getting first use of the ball every time and controlling the game.

Should hopefully be a completely different look.

That's a very good looking side

Blues by 22 points
This looks much better if we use Jack as a utility and Curnow as a winger (IF curnow can pull it off).

I hope it works of course, just would prefer to have another mid. E.g. a fit lang adds a lot more run than say Casboult. Ditto Kennedy.

Perhaps we will see Jack play pure midfield minutes? I think he is up to it and is more than handy around stoppages.

Also, is there a reason we can't just let Charlie off his leash in a Kouta / Richo wing type role - we talk about it but it's never REALLY happened yet. He clock's up an elite amount of Km's in a game and it may even ease the pressure on him to be that goal kicking focal point.

What's worth more? A potentially 50 goal stay at home forward in an otherwise stacked forwardline? Or a 20 goal 25 possession roaming winger (who may also help Cripps in protecting some of the smaller guys).

An opposition coaches nightmare too.
