I still think there needs to be a bit of buyer beware with Day. Remember when the poor guy dislocated his hip 😖
Of course.

That’s why (with Thompson, Collins, Lukozade, Hombsch, King, 2m Peter & Crossley) I hope they’d be willing to see him go than match a bid & knowing he lacks job security, he’d come to us for 2x years at good money with triggers for more.

Gws can afford $1m pa for cogs and Kelly? I call BS. Cameron already there, Patton on good coin, their 2 captains in ward and Davis would be on decent money, Whitfield, Greene, hopper, Himmelberg, Taranto, Tomlinson, plus more young talent coming through. If they pay cogs & Kelly they will have to shed more than just young talent.

I hope the club are seriously talking to Peter Wright.

Would be the most gettable KPF out there.

Can see him being as good as if not better then Hale in a ruck/forward role.

Ticks a lot of boxes and is a very good age.

Would more then likely cost our 1st i would imagine.

Wouldn't be totally against using a future 1st on him.

Brodie. Another we have substantial interest in. There are more plays to be had than Cogs and should Cogs stay we have to build a List and there are many, many positions to achieve.

This.

I was advised about a month or so ago that there has been very promising dialogue between us and his management.

He's definitely out the door and we're definitely at the front of the queue for his services.

Hopefully it stays that way because surely he'd prove to be another handy acquisition like Jack Scrimshaw has proven to be.

I suspect they can and the article is on the money.

Both Shaw and Deledio are out of contract this year, they would each be on reasonable money. If they roll around next year you'd think they would be offered reduced contracts, after other more important contracts have been done.

There is a 2% increase in the salary cap next year, that's roughly 250k.

It wouldn't be surprising if both Ward and Davis had heavily front-ended contracts. As at the beginning they wouldn't have been paying the kids and the salary cap had to be used somewhere.

Moving Shiel, Lobb and Scully would have had a significant impact on their salary cap.

The Tomlinson contract won't get done until they have an indication of what Kelly and Coniglio are doing. He might get squeezed as a club like St Kilda would probably be able to outbid GWS if the other two sign.

GWS will most likely try and move Patton maybe in a similar deal to that of Scully.

If Coniglio leaves GWS I don't think it will be because of money. It's going to be interesting to watch this play out as GWS have a harder, more mature edge this year. They look like contenders and he is now in that age bracket were he is becoming a leader of that playing group. I suspect both him and Kelly will stay, but that's just my view.

Cogs to me seems like he hasn't made a final decision yet.

I'm not sure how much success GWS look like they may have will have to much of a bearing.

I'm thinking if he leaves, the motivation will be playing for a quality coach, infront of decent crowds.

GWS 40% Hawthorn 40% Freo 20% for me.

Agree with everything but the point is, if they do end up keeping cogs and Kelly they will have to shed more than just young talent. What is in gws best long term interests?

I played around with salary cap combination.
I mean learning from Sydney, you can't have 2 players getting $1million without having at least 13 other players on $100k. You can only have 1 player on or above $1million to not exceed the cap.

Unless the salary cap reaching $25millions at least, I don't think any clubs can have multiple players on $1million pay check.

Pretty sure they are all in on keeping them both. It is certainly being reported GWS are trying to achieve this and it would be hard to think anything different.

If they weren't you would think they would have been better off 'shopping' them last year for a trade as opposed to one first rounder this year.

I haven't played around with the cap. So I'll take your word. But perhaps if they stay they are willing to sacrifice for success. Like most good clubs and cultures can do. Looking from the outside, GWS looks like a really strong culture at the moment.

It would be a tough sell to bring Coniglio in on 1 million when we have Mitchell out of contract this year. Mitchell deserves to be our highest paid player.

The reality is it will come down to who Coniglio chooses. If we were his team of choice then would / could they match? Even if they could I’m not 100% sold that they would because they do have a lot of talent coming through that will all eventually want a bigger slice of the pie which is what happens due having so many high end picks. In deciding to match the thing to think about is how it would look to holding a good servant of the club to ransom if he decides he wants to play elsewhere. Almost every servant of our club has been granted their wish to spread their wings elsewhere with little to no compensation whatsoever. That has been not only with players but coaches and high end staff as well.

My gut feel is that if Coniglio decides he wants to go then they’ll thank him for his service and take the compensation pick without matching and put all their focus towards their young up and comers and other FA / trade targets.

This is pretty much bang on and I agree with you 100% mate!

Those initial contracts would be over though right?

I agree that they can afford to keep both though.

Think we’ll get Patton off them though as there would t be nearly as much resistance on GWS’ part and not as much interest from other clubs.

No way GWS manage to retain Kelly and Coniglio when they already have Jeremy Cameron on $1M+, going to need new contracts for the likes of Tomlinson, buntine etc. Their situation is delicate because not only do they have these players to worry about, but the next crop of gun FA's like whitfield, taranto as well.
I see GWS letting one of kelly or coniglio go or maybe even both. If they lose both kelly/coniglio that would be disaster almost.

Yeah you are right, they would be over for sure.
