Mentioned upon looking at the stats I was wrong. I just didn’t notice him in the second half.

Although I can’t believe McDonald didn’t get his votes.
I think it went, FWIW: jiath 5, Jy 4, Lewis 3, Sicily 2, LMac 1

What’s Clarko doing next year?
As for the game itself - have we trained over preseason or just got together for the first time last week?

If we aren’t the 18th team again this year, tell me who is worse

Yep not too sure. I thought with a relatively healthy list (than last years schmozzle) we’d be a bit better but I’m not too confident now

Love a lot of what you said, but the one glaring issue for me is how we are building this backline?

It’s great to have a strong midfield, but if recent history has taught us anything, flags are won by teams with an elite defensive structure.

Look at Melbourne. We’re a shambles until they decided to fix their backline by brining in Lever, May, moving Salem back, recruiting Rivers etc.
Their fwd line was also crap before bringing in brown and Jackson. While we are at it the middle was crap before Oliver and truck.

It's so disappointing to see the same old "3 North men fly/3 North men chase one opponent" stuff again for the 20th season in a row.

Surely this is something that can be eradicated by decent coaching? Is it really too much to ask?

People are worried about our defence but structurally it held up well without a few key pieces. Our mids were fine and probably beat it’s Hawthorne counterparts. Our biggest issue is our forward line. 53 forward entries for 8 goals. We have absolutely no system going in. No leading. No structure. No crumbing. No ability to keep the ball in to create repeated entries. Blokes flying with other blokes. We are not despite being pumped up by the media an attacking team. We have averaged 8-9 goals a game under Nobel. It needs to be fixed or we are going nowhere.
It held up well but most teams are kicking their attack off from the backline - we need more out of them than just stemming the tide. When we had control of the game in the middle our backline was still barely able to find a way out of there.

The lack of any sort of movement between HB and HF when we’re in possession is downright criminal.

3/4 of the side stand flat footed and wait for someone else to lead which does the opposition’s job for them.

Based on the games I’ve seen so far possibly *

DeBradification TM my friend is going to require some of this:

we went inside 50, 53 x times for 8 goals. We try to start our attack from half back but the movement and link up play from the forwards is non existent. I was behind the goals today. Sure hall had a few howlers but the movement in front gave him nothing. If I am being truly honest we played as if we had no comprehension of a game plan. No clear leading lanes, no designated small and bigs pairing off for the mark or crumb, it was just a free for all and the first time I started to question if noble was a good game day coach rather than just an excellent people manager. We play as if we are panicking every time we get the ball and that’s because the players don’t either trust or understand what’s expected of them and their teammates

List of unacceptable errors:

15-20m kicks that miss targets.

3-5m handballs that miss the target.

Continual fumbling.

Dropped chest marks.

3 players closing in on one, leaving two spares free.

This is far from comprehensive, but I’d wager we lead the league in all categories.

Disappointing.

LMac BOG. He doesn't play today we lose by 8 goals.

Had the game on our terms until LDUs pathetic attempt at a handball coughed up a goal. Hawks didn't look back after that.

Long year ahead. Hawks are shit so I think we will be in for some pain.

Agreed whole heartedly. I’m not suggesting replacing Hall with either Goater or Bergman right now, but if their ability to break lines and distribute is as good as we are lead to believe then I am looking forward to that day.

Hall has always been a high turnover player. Several times today he ran into dead-ends, and turned it over by both hand and foot by disadvantaging the receiver.
Agreed. And this was a match between 2 bottom placed teams from the year before.

Imagine if it was a high pressure final?

What would Hall's stats look like then?

How many goals from turnovers would he give away ?

I just hope Noble can identify a weak link and start planning to address the issue.

Because, today, this was definitely a weak link for North.

I agree, I wouldnt be dropping him for Goater or Bergmann next week.

But if Noble isn't as concerned as we are, then the question has to be asked about his coaching.

In one of the interviews they club stated we decided to start the rebuild with the midfield. I would say kpp forward and defence will be next.
Yep look at Richmond/Melbourne for recent success and how they built their lists - if we gel this year and can get Tom Lynch, Lever, May, Ben Brown (sigh) to complete the package it becomes easier

FWIW I rate CCJ just a shit day and shit selection. He will come right and worst case if not we have decent ruck stocks coming through

Same old, same old.

Can't kick, can't handball, can't select, can't coach, can't leap up from potential to production, can't run games out, can't kpd, can't umpire, can't talk back.

Shit show, but at least we have the huddle, inclusivity, Sonja Hood and now covid to blame.

I watched JHF for a while in that 3rd quarter

He looked blown up

We need to be careful; not sure if one pre season is enough at the moment

But sheesh the skies the limit come 2024 and that tank is built
He's played a lot of senior footy which is a plus but it will likely take a week or two just to figure out how to not get exposed by the pace of AFL. You're right 24 onwards will be amazing but even this year I suspect the team will find the balance pretty quickly with him.
I think we are seeing tactical pain in the face of strategic direction.

Goldy started on the bench.

We are likely going to see imbalance again as we get games into blokes who will likely be on the list after Goldy is done.

It’s hard when it sticks out like dogs balls like it did today that it is a tactical mistake.
Truth in this. Goldy was streets ahead of Xerri & CCJ when on, I doubt this is a surprise to the coaches so I'll give them some credit for trying to develop the replacements although I'm a touch concerned that it might be a waste of time and his replacement isn't in this current squad of 25 odd players. It might be Edwards but giving games to these guys doesn't develop him any faster (I'm aware he's not ready).

Oh what I would give for a Scott Thompson right now.

Scooter was never the most talented, but criminally underrated.

Always contested hard, great mark and always prepared to take the game on from the back half.

Can you imagine the difference in today’s game if Jiath was playing for us? We just don’t have an athletic back half tall that takes the game on.

It feels dirty thinking it, but would we have been better taking Granger-Barras over Phillips?

But Phillips would have had 29 today and kicked 4 for Hawthorn and GB sitting on our bench with a 4 week hamstring.

You know it.

Did you watch DGB today? Phillips didn’t play and he had more of it.
