Autopsy Terrific win against Melbourne

So much joy!

Mills doesn’t show much emotion but couldn’t wipe the smile from his face in his interview on ground post-match…. not a cliché to be heard.
The McCartin boys walking off with arms around each other… Gulden putting on a show for the crowd after his bomb.
Rowbottom the maniac! Silk Florent.
11 down and with enough time, Dees, and indeed most neutrals, would still have fancied themselves… Not. Even. A. Sniff.
Wilber’s numbers down a bit but a couple of crucial contested marks at critical moments.
Young Logan might have just cost himself some $ in his next contract… looked pretty emotionally connected to the group.
Did I mention Rowbottom? Was that his breakout game? Put the wind up some big name oppo last night.
Chaddy just doing whatever the f*** Chad wants… wrests momentum at will.
Lukey the scrapper.
Praise to Ladhams… can’t fault his effort. And a career-best? for Reidy… 10 tackles including 5 in F50.
Pretty unbelievable win. Coming off last weeks high and with the distraction of Buddy’s appeal, the focus early on, the unwavering effort throughout, and the composure to finish the job, against an imposing premier coming off their first loss of the season and in their backyard, paints a rosy picture for us fans.
Speaking of fans… how good were our Melbourne mob? Bit quiet early on, as happens when you’re down, but the ROOOAAAARRRS in the last were amazing!!!
And so we step off the rollercoaster for a fortnight… f*** how I pray the boys come back in the same mood as last night.

That passage of play w McCartin and Pickett on three quarter time, I am sure that would have been a big focus at the huddle. Was intent defining for us going into the last.

Agree. He did play his role well. His deficits are he struggles to kick over a jam tin and that he is more athlete than natural footballer.

Late in the game I had a terrible thought he would have a kick after the siren for the win from 40m and the kick would not make it.

It would be great if we could combine Joel's athleticism with Hayden's footy IQ and hardness. (Oh that might be Logan!)
Last year Amartey kicked a goal from outside 50 off a couple of steps. The ball cleared the goal line very easily. Thats quite a few jam tins.
He played his role well last night, he was the 3rd tall coming in for his first game in ages. Like any player, give them a run of games and they will gel better and therefore perform better.
IMO.. which may be unpopular.. Amartey has truck loads more to offer than McLean (no knock on McLean, he gives 110% every game)

On last night he was You don’t need to hit the stat sheet to be important in a win….

Our CBAs for this match were interesting:

Rowbottom - 20
Mills - 16
Parker - 16
Warner - 15
Papley - 1
Gulden - 1

(Ladhams - 19)
(Reid - 4)

That is the most settled midfield we've fielded all year, by far. And they did a number on the best midfield in the comp. Less is more.

One thing that's going unmentioned, we beat Melbourne and they were on.

If someone read the stats before the game
Tracc and Oliver 25 touches
Brayshaw 24
Gawn 29 and 3
Fristch 3 goals

You would assume 80 point win.

Don't let Melbourne fans run it down. They were on last night, they were just outplayed fair and square

People say Papley's free at the end was BS. But in what world is someone sliding knee first onto a players back not a free. Even the commentators said it was a clear free kick.

Papley's was clearly a free, even if accidental. Gulden's was by far the more dubious one and IMO shouldn't have been paid as you see that happen about 50 times a match. Umpire got sucked in by the momentum I reckon. But oh well, they owe us a flag, so **** em.

I think the angle we first saw it was deceptive, wide angle from directly behind. Looked like two players just falling over as the chase the ball to the boundary, and I think that's what a lot of people based their view on.

Close angle from the side shows he got two knees in the back (also the back of the head). Wasn't much he could do, you often see players jump over to avoid doing just that, but it looks like Langdon actually lost his feet which made jumping impossible. It's tough but can see why it was paid. Being clumsy is rarely an excuse for the umpires.

the commentator silence on it was telling. they wanted to follow their Vic bias, but had no leg to stand on so said little

"You told me to kick hard through the ball"
Edit "You told me not to kick it too hard"
