Carlton played the best football last night they have played in a decade full of intense pressure and courageous acts by the players for it to be stolen away in the last 11 seconds of the game.

We were primed, up and about and it came down to a kick to the reigning premiers, so they should be proud of their efforts but with 1min 10 to go in the last it was immaturity and a few mistakes that gave them a sniff and eventually the win but this will be a well earnt hard lesson that will make this club only stronger for the future.

What stood out for me the most was we had players who showed that it meant something to them and took every contest as it was their last but unfortunately it just didn't go our way in the end and as a supporter/member that's what we needed to see that unrelenting effort from our players who have not showed that for at least the last 6-10 weeks.

Cripps,Docherty,McGovern,McKay,Young,Silvagni,Setterfield,Martin were all really good and battled hard all night but unfortunately in extreme pressure finals type footy you need everyone to play this way not just a few.

My only real negatives from the game are the umpires inconsistent interpretations of dropping/holding the ball need to be addressed as it seemed melbourne (Viney especially) could get tackled/spun/fall to the ground and attempt a hand ball kick and still spill it forward and it was play on yet we seemed to get penalized for the same actions.

Plus in the game preview I got the player wrong ( Weideman) but yet again we let a player who has done sweet **** all for the year/years in Jake ****ing Melksham destroy us and kick 4 goals and be the difference in a game we could've won.
We seem to let these types do it all the ****ing time Membrey,Bruce,McStay etc now [PLAYERCARD]Jake Melksham[/PLAYERCARD] it just defies logic and to let that big grinning campaigner take a huge mark against 4 defenders and goal to give them momentum was infuriating.

Let's hope the boys use this loss as motivation beat the Filth next week and get to the finals and scare the **** out of some teams.

GO BLUES!!!

If he can repeat that next week it will go a long way to us knocking off the Pies.
Tbf, history shows it's a big if - history shows he'll either do SFA or do a calf

Hopefully he backs it up. Would still like him to get a bit more involved though, 9 touches (obviously took advantage with 3 goals from those 9 touches)

Best game I have seen Young play, provided great rebound, intercept marks, [PLAYERCARD]Ben Brown[/PLAYERCARD] was basically unsighted.
Disappointing when Young was standing the mark at CHB, Brown drifts forward and marks in the goal square with Weitering 2 metres away just day dreaming.

Setterfield is just an out and out mid not a wingman. His best game for the club for a while I thought. Problem is I don’t see how he gets a game with the starting inside mids we have most weeks
That's not a bad problem to have. We have seen that our mids get injuries (be interesting to see how many games all of Cripps, Kennedy, Hewitt and Cerra have all played together), good depth if he can perform like that.

But he needs to do it again. Played a decent game on the wing against GWS then played a putrid game the next week.

Lob is emergency material for a top team, the other two should be moved on.
Get some strength conditioning into him and make him do 1000 one on one's during preseason against the likes of Saad, Docherty, Martin etc.... at the moment his best result is halving a contest if he's lucky. Cotrell has already passes him in marking and contested ball.

LOB couldn’t hit the side of a barn - kicking was horrible, was a little better laying a couple tackles
Yeah again he misses too many kicks under little to no pressure. Need to hit them as he has too many other aspects of his game that aren't quite AFL level.

I get a feel now for how devastating the '99 prelim must have been for Essendon fans.

Just the absolute feeling of frustration and helplessness.

I think you're under selling a prelim loss compared to a round 22 loss....[emoji848]

Owies hits this pass, we soak another 15 seconds, and we win

How does a professional footballer grub this ball? He did it multiple times last night, on one occasion twice in the same play. He does not deserve to play next week
15 seconds off takes the clock down to a minute left. Melbourne were set up well to cut off any chip passes after that. Melbourne may still have won after that

No- that's what I mean. Think how bad we are feeling after a Round 22 loss - multiply that by about 10 for Essendon must have felt.

We at least get another shot next week - they had to wait a year.

He had 2 possessions in the second half.
Both our wingers don’t get enough or do enough.
I can’t see how people can highlight Cottrell having a good game, yet point the finger at OB. Need more from both right now. The fact we are carrying 3 or 4 players that aren’t up to AFL standard right now, is why we are struggling. Add a Kennedy, Hewett, Cerra, or Williams and we are talking a different look and feel through the wings, ie Walsh / Cerra / Setterfield rotations, etc.

I understand these perspectives from an aesthetics point of view. But in that game the blues and dockers had about the same number of tackles as the blues did on their own last night.

What I’m talking about is the fact we REALLY embraced pressure. In a way I don’t think I’ve ever seen us so. It genuinely felt like a watershed moment to me. And I’ve felt it was our remaining major weakness.

Time will tell of course. But I think the penny dropped.
Difficult to compare, as Melbourne play a much more contested type of game and aren't a quick side, which means there's more tackles just by the nature of the way the game was played.. Faster sides that play on and spread such as Richmond, Collingwood and Freo to an extent tend to worry us more . I also thought Melb came in too tall . But in terms of a full 4 qtr effort by Carlton, last nights games and that game against Feo would be our best 4qtr efforts for the year.

It does mean Saad can take a mark and a bit of time and try and hit up another short, takes all pressure off.

It was also a really bad kick from Saad (under next to zero pressure as well). He had to go boundary side and Harry marks it easily imo. But the kick went inside to gawns favour.

But we doubled down that error by all 3 players going for the mark from Saads kick and no-one at the fall of the ball to tackle and get a ball up.

3 bad errors in a row to try and ice the win.

Well I’ve woken up still frustrated at how we managed to give that away in the last 2-3 minutes, but overall pretty pleased with how we played the game.
I hope it sets a new benchmark for pressure required.

Good games from Setterfield, Martin, Harry, Young plus the usual suspects.

On the negatives..
Weiters just hasn’t looked himself since the shoulder.

Pitto looked a bit lost at times.

Owies isn’t going to make it as a league footballer, just too slow and torches the ball, he tries hard but if you’re a slow forward pocket you need more strings to your bow than tackling when you can catch someone.

If anything it shows how desperate melbourne are to apply pressure. Saad has 40 meters which is quickly closed down by melbourne

Our effort was high, very high
Our skill level was equally low.
We win the game by 4 goals by just bringing an average level of skill execution.

Last week your post would have been

Martin, Cottrell and Setterfield

Not finals players.

Your actual post should be

Player X, Player X and Player X

Probably not in our best 22 but have to play when we have 14 players unavailable due to injury.

I don’t see it with LOB….I’ve tried I’ve watched him play wing many times this year.

He does cover the ground (although he’s not lightning fast) and sticks to his role…until the ball goes along his wing and he needs to contest the footy……lacks composure under pressure and doesn’t stick tackles……

Ultimately yes your right…..probably only Martin and Cotts would be in the side if we had the extra 10 players available

We tend to drop off in the pressure ratings when Durdin and Motlop pressure disipates, they are not fully seasoned yet but they are our future and growing every week. Owies is important in the fact that he helps fill the void while these two develop, his pressure is good. Still think his poor kicking has something to do with the injury that saw him miss several games mid season.

Still gutted. Most disappointed I have been after a home and away game since Warren Ralph’s point that looked like a goal against the Pies in the mid-80s
