A solid season.

15 wins and a draw from 22 regular season games. 7 of them were away wins.

Played 2 finals . Won a home Elim final vs the dogs and lost to the magpies in the semis.
Not many would have been optimistic enough to predict that at the start of the season.

Who does Collingwood have in their box then that gives them the experience over us? Macrae being a first year coach.

Not sure. I'm thinking more about us and on top of having a very inexperienced team of players, we had a very young and inexperienced coaching group as a whole. Re the Pies, despite being a first year head coach, Macrae would be more experienced than all of our coaches including JL when it comes to coaching at the MCG in big games. I'm sure he's got very good mature and experienced assistants too and I'm not using it as an excuse because our players clearly weren't up to it either but as a whole it was a contributing factor.

Plus didn’t Macrae take Richmond VFL to 2 premierships while the AFL team was winning them also? He has won 3 flags as a player and experienced it as a coach. Has a winning mentality.

I think moreso they are just discussing where they want the club to be in 3-5 years time
Ok.... Good to hear that.

So we are talking about how Justin Longmuir and the playing squad will be like in 2024-6?

Could be anything.

Justin Longmuir as a coach has been solid this season making finals and winning a final.

Don't know how Freo will be by 2024-26.

We could make another Elim final in 2023...

Could be anywhere in 2024.

We could be 9th to 12th in 2024 and going through a mini rebuild in 2024-5 then back into finals in 2026.

Hell by 2024 Freo could have a premiship with the men's or ladies side

One we have developed our forwardline we will be contending so I'd say a max of 3 years but maybe before than? Justin is a good coach but I want to see less conservative team selection and an actual plan B when things don't go right.

Agreed. Most predicted a 9th -12th placed finish.

Some predicted finals but like 7th or 8th.

I predicted 10th or 11th. Only way I saw Freo making finals in 2022 was getting 7th or 8th.

Saying that most dockers fans were disappointed not getting top 4 for that Double chance. I was in the minority of not wanting top 4.

Glad dockers got 5th. Won a home Elim final. Lost in the semi final.

Better than getting 4th and going out in straight sets and copping it on social media sites

If the Blues had beaten the Pies in Rd 22 (as should have happened) would have got us a final at the G against Geelong. If we lose we would have played, Lions (5th) or Blues (8th) at home. That is very winnable, then a PF against the Swans?

For a team that has pace, good kicks, we are too slow ATM. That’s coaching.
Fix that up and sure we are contending earlier.
It’s why Cats actually won the flag, beforehand they always were found out
in the big games.
WC got lucky with ball retention, but with the rule changes now that gameplan
looks old and tired.
Take the game on forward of centre and anything is possible, don’t and we are
Being held back.

I have posted this before and will post this again.

I was one of the few dockers fans to be happy for that 5th spot over 4th. Glad how freos finals campaign panned out.

Won that home Elim final vs the dogs. 19 of those 23 blokes that night had their 1st finals win In their careers.

Had we got 4th, we would of lost to the cats then lose to magpies or swans in the home semi final

Yep, premierships as a player, assistant coach AND as a coach in his own right (head coach). Ideal resume imo.
Well Josh Carr has a similar resume.

2004 premiership as a Port Adelaide player.

I don't think he has a Premiership player as an assistant coach.

He did guide North Adelaide to a premiership in the SANFL in 2018... Despite a controversial preliminary final win.

Got this weird feeling if Hinkley fails to deliver finals for port in 2023, Josh Carr is next in line

2023 AFL FIXTURE.jpg

A very interesting AFL fixture.

Freo made top 6 and won a final. I expected a tough dockers fixture. But Freos is brutal.... So for the 2nd year running, freo has both grand final teams from the previous year twice.

the 2021 grand final sides were Demons and dogs. in 2022, Freo got both twice.

the 2022 grand final had Cats vs Swans. In 2023, Freo has both 2022 grand final sides twice. Got cats in their turf in Geelongistan.

So freos 6 double ups.... Eagles, Swans, Cats, Brisbane, Hawks and Dogs. a couple of bottom 6 sides (eagles and hawks), 3 prelim finalists (Swans cats and Brisbane), one finalist (Dogs)

Dockers make the 8 with this fixture, then Justin Longmuir has done a masterful job in 2023.

Freo only had dogs once in the home and away though

If we make finals then we are likely to get swans or cats three times

Last year we had double ups with the following teams & their ladder positions at the time.

Melbourne (1st)
GWS (6th)
West Coast (9th)
Saints (10th)
Carlton (13th)

This year is

Geelong (1st)
Sydney (2nd)
Brisbane (3rd/4th)
Bulldogs (8th)
Hawthorn (13th)
West Coast (17th)

If we had the same draw in 2022 as ours for 2023 we'd get the following. And I am taking liberties judging Port as 3/4th as you never know where the slider comes from and I want to make a point.

Melbourne (1st) but ended up 5th
Bulldogs (2nd) but ended up 8th
Port (3rd/4th) but ended up 11th
Essendon (8th) but ended up 15th
Carlton (13th) but ended up 9th
Collingwood (17th) but ended up (3rd/4th)

It's the risers you need to worry about when it comes to draws. We know that WC & Hawks are going to be bad, really bad so not much chance of them rising. The others are already very strong so they can only fall from here and the doggies are a flip of the coin. Plus we match up well against Geelong, Bulldogs and Brisbane so not sure why you are so worried.

I think our draw is great while not looking that way on paper or from so called expert opinions.
