McPherson

Disagree on McPherson. Think he would have been a very handy medium defender if not for injuries. Have to remember he only ever had one season with a good run at it and only played 28 games in total. Had a lot of improvement in him.
Has a footy brain & like Brown plays to his strengths/knows his limitations.

Issue was always going to be staying free of injury & he is on his final chance to prove he can stay fit.

Not too sure about that actually re McPherson...lad's never really had the continuity to be able to make a assessment like that.
Basic skill errors and ball handling issues

Not overly quick

None of that changes much with a better run at it

I disagree not having doubts about your body giving out goes to having confidence in it and what follows on from that.

He's actually one of the better kicks on our list when fit and confident.

Skills are sound.

Not speedy, but not slow.

Reads the game well & plays within his limitations.

But it's all academic if he can't get his body right.

I feel like McPherson is a AFL standard player, but simply as a solid defensive player who lacks an obvious offensive weapon. A textbook high floor-low ceiling type. And his position was always destined to be usurped by a higher upside players coming into their 2nd-4th seasons.

Nothing against him, you need quality depth who can plug and play when needed. But we have too many faster, kick first, linebreakers on the list who should be prioritized in that position over him.

Until our defensive run improves, Dawson has to play back. Smith is cooked, Parnell is contributing low disposals, Milera is still finding his feet and Jones is never gonna be a reliable run and carry player.

Also, would you want anyone else except Dawson taking kick outs? For me, no is the clear answer. He can open up the whole field with his penetrating bullet passes.

We have been complaining about kick outs for years and now we have someone capable of being creative we want to move him up the pitch.

If Milera really comes on this year (big if IMO), then maybe we release Dawson up the ground.

Is that what you think he did with the kickouts? He pretty much kept to the script of long to the flank.

With his aerial strength I’d prefer if he was there for a marking option with that kickout.

And teams aren’t allowing him to provide that run, they were dragging him deep into defence and that’s why against Port, Nicks moved him up the ground, plus McEntee kicked 2 on him.

You shouldn’t need your best kick taking the kickouts.
It’s one time in the game you’re not under pressure, an AFL player should be able to do this competently.

I recall Neil Craig had a psychologist come in and test players decision making under pressure and thats why Stiffy got the kick out job

No pressure to kick it to the right flank deep though

You saying there’s pressure or no pressure?
It’s a different sort of pressure to physical running pressure.
AFL players should be able to execute a kick out.

Decision making under pressure was the criteria. Stiffy was one of the highest

Its why I say 2007 Stiffy cracked. The long down the right was ok ( Thommo should have knocked it over the boundary) But step back in for another point or dont kick it near Buddy and we likely win that game.

Ben Hart was so good at these. Also his kicks while under pressure. Almost never missed a target.

Is the club trying to sell Milera to the fans because the player taken directly before and after him in the draft are both Coleman medalists and he's done realistically nothing exceptional during his career?
The 2015 draft is littered with early dud selections.

Schache at 2, Francis at 6, Ah Chee at 8, Weiderman at 9.

Taking Milera at 11 is far from the worst recruiting choice made that year.

And for what it's worth, I still have faith there's something there with Wayne. Granted it's not a Henley Beach Cafe's level of faith, but there still some left.

Have you seen our other players kick?

Dawson can unleash a coast to coast goal with his kicking.

Yes and I’ve explained why I don’t think your best kick should be the one player doing a kick under the least amount of pressure.
Especially when he’s also a great mark.

He was more creative with kickouts than you are giving him credit for.

Also, when he does kick long down the flank he is one of a few players who can actually kick to advantage.

Dawson is the one you want the bloke taking the kick out to target.
