Is James Jordan even ahead of Mathew Roberts???
JJ 187cm 82kg mainly outside mid
23 at Rd1 57 games
MR 184cm 86kg mainly inside mid
20 at Rd1 7 games
Matt hasn't really played inside in seniors. James' VFL numbers for 2023 were very good in a good team.
Matt of course knows our systems.

Think we'll see a battle between Western Bulldogs and Melbourne for Geelongs Pick 7. Especially if Suns to a deal with North for pick 4

Suns will want a Future First, attractive to us or the Dogs but not for lolNorf..

Yep.

Had a look at the Dees Board to check. Mixed views, the typical sad good riddance variety was certainly there.

Noted their Board had kicked off a hypothetical about the merits of trading Oliver out to address their need for a KPF (who can have a run in the ruck) and for a fast line breaking mid.

Now I admit bias here but I would look at trading anyone bar McCartin, Gulden and maybe McDonald for Oliver.
They should have been all over McLean... too bad

I daily thank our lucky stars we signed up the big fella.

Few Clubs have a natural fwd/ruck and have no doubt there were a few Clubs interested.

Here's the gist of the article regarding Grundy trade:
  • Dees not paying any part of his contract
  • Swans will honour a 4 year contract @ $650k
  • But here's the kicker - if the deal goes through the Magpies are going to the AFL to see if they can wriggle out of their deal with Grundy.
  • If AFL house accept the Magpies whelching on their deal then we're in the hook for all of the monies which is an additional $350k
Collingwood have paid $250K of Grundy's contract and I believe there is no chance that that will change.
As to whether the balance be $650K or $750K, I'm not sure. I was under the impression his contract was 7 years @ $1M per year but that may not be the case.
Assuming Melbourne agree to a fair trade for him, there is no reason at all that Melbourne would be paying any part of his salary unless they wish to in order for a better pick. That will all play out during the trade period.

5 games in the VFL this year averaging: 32.8 touches, 1.2 goals and 4.8 tackles
18 games in the AFL this year averaging: 13 disposals, 0.22 goals and 2.05 tackles
You've conveniently ignored the fact that he was starting sub in 6 of those and got subbed out in 2 others.
An average of 13 disposals under those circumstances is pretty good imo.

Jordan & Grundy both from Melbourne. That is handy actually. Because we will have a mids point of view on how Grundy rucks and how to rove to him.

Our mid depth has just become stronger. This will allow young players to develop. Now our core mids will comprise:

Mills, Parker, Warner, Rowbottom, Gulden, Jordan, Roberts, Sheldrick, Cleary

Rucks; Grundy, Ladhams, McAndrews, Owen ???, May
Add part timers:
Papley, Heeney, Campbell (usually wing)

I think our list is looking far better already. Our draftees will also make a difference.

I am not as fussed as most of you seem to be about the need for a new traded KPD. I think we have a pretty good core group of tall defenders since taking Arnold in the Mid Season Draft and he will improve greatly by doing a big preseason with us. I think we can draft a KPD with potential and develop him.

DPD: McCartin, Melican (was playing very well until injured), Francis, Arnold, Rampe (although I prefer he did not play this role anymore), Blakey (is capable of playing this role at a pinch 196cm) & Draftee.

Compare the list of tall defenders to our list of tall forwards;

Amartey, McLean, McDonald, Buller, Reid (if he ever gets on the park)

That is 7 KPD to 4 KPF

I think we have brought in potential stars. Grundy was playing great footy when Pies decided his contract was fad too big and they needed space in the cap. Jordan was a great player for Deed but seemed to be overlooked for others. I think his effort in the final was a consequence of a jaded season BG Dees players. Their game plan was a loser that day & the players knew it.

Have you been in Siberia the past few days? Our core mids will not comprise Mills next year unless you consider him playing from July/August is relevant.

Holland's joining his brother at Blues according to all journos.

We pick up Jordan & Grundy

I find that odd. Moves from GC cause he can't crack into the seniors which is fair enough but he's not going to go ahead of Cripps, Walsh, Cerra and Hewett. So, whilst his brother is playing in the seniors, he'll be off to some God forsaken place playing in the 2s just as he has been this year.

I remember Jordon had a really good game against us back in round 3 think he had something like a goal and 20ish touches, he impressed me from that game. Didn't really get much of a crack as an inside mid at melbourne because of the depth they have there.

With Parker maybe moving more forward next year and with no mills in the first half, I think he has a good opportunity to play as an inside mid with our group. Adds to the depth which is always important.

Isn't UFA exactly that? Move with no comp.
UFA means that he is an unrestricted free agent meaning that his existing club does not have the option of matching our offer. That is the only difference. The AFL treat all free agents the same in relation to compensation picks. Difference is that most UFAs don't get the huge contracts that will generate a compensation pick unlike the restricted free agents RFA.

AFL Tables doesn't list if they are the sub or not. But it is also why I included his VFL stats

Isn’t he a delisted free agent rather than an UFA? As he was delisted previously?

I’m not sure compensation applies? Could be wrong.
He was a dfa 2 years ago but Melbourne resigned him. Because they did that, he automatically becomes a free agent. Once he was resigned he ceased to be a dfa.

Big opportunity for one of the players to grab midfield mins. I'm hoping we see potential midfield candidates go berserk this off-season to get that spot. Whether it be new recruits or current players, everyone knows their is midfield opportunities in this team. I really hope Jordon acquisition at the very least improves the competitiveness of our potential midfielders.

Parker, rowbottom, gulden, warner, papley, heeney, roberts, sheldrick and now jordon. That's pretty stacked, he didn't say what level of quality though...
That being the case you could list the midfield of every team and say its stacked. That's not what he meant. Our midfield is not stacked and certainly no where near the quality of Melbourne's midfield.

No he is not a plodder. A very good player and quick. He played in their premiership, even though he didn't play. I think Goodwin could have at least given him a run as they were winning by so much.
Sorry to disappoint, but quick and Jordon don't go together. Has a turning circle of a mack truck and is prone to hold up momentum which has killed us in games.

There were opportunities for him this year to play as a genuine inside mid when Oliver and he failed to grab his opportunities when it was there for him.

He's a genuine plodder who'll give you solid effort everytime he runs out for you and that's all you can ask.

A stacked midfield would be similar to the Bulldogs/Collingwood/Brisbane/Melbourne...midfield's that have plenty of quality/options and that have proven that over the years.

You could argue that Parker/Mills/Gulden/Warner have proven that quality for us, with Parker probably having less midfield minutes going forward and Mills likely out for a fair chunk of 2024. That's four.

I don't think Rowbottom would be that hard to replace in our midfield, unfortunately, and Papley/Heeney are forwards first, not midfielders.

Jordon's hardly coming into a "stacked midfield", if we're being honest with where we are at. Our midfield is probably the weakest link of our list.

Digressing here but why are people so fixed on this bloke as a regular best 22 player let alone a best 22 mid ? Has shown very little at Senior level in brief appearances other than looking hard as a cats head with a less than convincing left foot.
