I was watching last yesterday the Saints play aka Yooralla I think that's what they called themsleves.
And Darcy Wilson apparently put on power speed and 9kgs in the offseason as he prepared for the rigours of AFL life.

If Phillips doesn't make it. It is on him no one else. It blows my tiny mind watching these young footballers of ours be non competitive. If Phillips could run all-day he'd be half a chance of being successful. L. Neil is the perfect example of an average footballer who uses his amazing fitness base to be successful. You don't get that fit training Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. It takes months/years of grind.
Dedication is the word I'm looking for. These guys must notice how fit their opponents are. Do they not think that maybe they too should get that fit .

It is the most basic of sports in many ways. So simple and more than likely if you're fitter than your opponent you'll run over the top of him.

I don't buy the north can't develop players line. I never have fwiw.
Spot on.

The bottom line is - our players think they are fit, and compared to local footballers, they are. But they are NOT AFL fit.

NM Fit and AFL Fit are poles apart.

Nick Daicos wouldn’t raise a sweat training at NMFC

There's definitely a future spot in this team for Will Phil. Today, for example, Shiels was playing a tagging role on Merrett. Shiels most likely retires at the end of the season, so there is one midfielder that needs to be replaced. Could the tagging role be Will's, going forward?
There is no definite spot for Will, he can only play inside mid and hasn't got himself into the physical condition to do that at AFL level.

Liam Shiels has been tagging for years, he has great concentration and is still super fit. Will has none of this. Zach would blow him up in five minutes.

I think if Will modelled his game on say Reid from WCE and ran really fast and kicked the ball a very long way. I suggest he would be back in the side in no time.

Ponder that, if you will
He doesn't even need to look that far,
he could literally copy notes from Wardlaw.
step 1 defensive application.

I liken him to Sam Mitchell

Similar athletic/size attributes both clean with ball off both sides
That’s the career type and player style he should be modelling
So it is really hard then to fathom given how much Sam Mitchell and Clarko had together why the coaches haven't been able to fashion this into Will.

That was last year. Will isn't the same player this year.

2003 was his RS season. He also had 135 clearances (6.4 per game), which isn't shown on that graphic.
Yeh eye test says they're poles apart but was surprised at the stats nonetheless. Clearanc3s a big differentiator then.

By memory it took that 2001 hawks crop until around 2007 before they started causing us problems.

I'll be honest, when people tell me Phillips is going to be good I get the same feeling that I used to get when people told me that Bastinac and Ziebell would be stars lol
Gonna need some further elaboration on what the feeling is

He is a bust as things stand but a coach can weave him into the team. If his strength is inside role then for bloody sake get him to specialise that at vfl to a good degree so that he can come into the 1st and alleviate the stars to more attacking roles, think of luke ball going to pies allow swan thomas pendulbury to attack.

Nice cherry-picking. I assume you didn't have the same feeling for Cunners and LDU and Sheezel, though?

I did have the same feeling for Cunners, but it was quelled many years ago. LDU I was unsure but I'm gaining more confidence, and Sheezel I have never had any doubt.

LOL, so pessimism for every young player (except Sheezel, who was a no-brainer) until your pessimism was either vindicated or 'quelled'?

That's just straight out pessimism, dude.

No, you asked me about some players in particular. There's been players I've done the reverse with (optimism, but didn't make it), such as Vickers-Willis.

I asked you about 3 players who lived up to their promise after you suggested you always get a feeling for the ones who don't.

It's a theme of this thread. What I react to is all the "I told you he was no good, I knew it from the start" about Phillips (and others). I'm sure many people did have a feeling Phillips might be a bust, but the same people were negative about Cunnington and LDU. The rest of us don't need to hear how right you were, especially since you only started telling us after it was obvious to all ("you" referring to all such posters, not just you Engi). It's painful how some people are on repeat with "I always said he was no good" but they actually didn't always say it here.

Another aspect is that all this is in the context of we North supporters having been beaten around the head for years, so we're naturally worried about every recruit. The law of averages means that worry will be vindicated in some cases.

So were you calling Cunnington, petracca a bust in their first few years too?
