When the Sydney Swans swept up [PLAYERCARD]Chad Warner[/PLAYERCARD] with pick 39 at the 2019 AFL Draft, they secured a youngster with an insatiable appetite for the contest. Warner attacks the ball and opponents with aggression and is relishing calling midfield bulls Josh Kennedy and [PLAYERCARD]Luke Parker[/PLAYERCARD] his teammates at the Swans. Warner impressed for Western Australia in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, averaging 18.2 touches (50 per cent contested), 3.2 clearances and 6.8 tackles per game. He also tallied an average of 27.1 disposals, 6.4 clearances and 7.4 tackles per match at Colts level for East Fremantle in 2019. He earned his AFL debut against Richmond in Round 6 of the 2020 season, recording eight disposals and two tackles.

I just went and had a look back at 2021 and every AFL dot com analyst had Swans bottom six other than Barrett. Like I said previously. I'm not here to trump up my club or shit on yours. If we are bottom 2/4, Harley looks like he is out and Oscar leaves, then sure Chad won't come, why would he? But I think that is taking the worst possible scenario and then stating that is the most likely.

There is a whole season that needs to be played. At this point, we are healthy (37/45 available), have a new coach, new style and should see development from guys like Reid, Hewett, Ginbey, Maric, Dewar, Bo Allan, Brockman, Harley and new guys like Archer Reid and Bo Allan that haven't debuted yet.



if Chad is contemplating coming home but doesn't want to leave a top 4 team for a bottom 4 team, a holding response like "I am open minded" is a smart and honest summation of his mindset. But those things are all still yet to be determined.

By the way, I totally get that while remains unsigned, that this can be a sensitive thread. So more than happy to scoot if you guys would prefer.

In other words
Chad would be stupid to move to West Coast if Reid leaves.
Chad would be not confident of a successful club in West Coast in 2025 and the following couple of years.

Fremantle have a much more advanced list, but perenially underperform. Does he think he can be a catalyst and help turn around a club that has never won a grand final?

Summary
I reckon Chad stays for at least 1 or 2 when Sydney is "in the window".

Though happy wife means happy life maybe the only thing that MAY scuttle the above logic.

Chas has had the best part of 2 years to at least somewhat publicly commit to the club , which he hasn’t done. That’s as good as him saying “im gone “

Still think he wants to see if WCE have ANY sort of future. If not, he's a Swan. If they do, he will go home.

Not sure that English was his best subject at school. I'm sure he would consider any and all offers, he would be an idiot if he didn't.
Two years would be smart unless he was desperate to get "home" 🤔 or the money was WAY beyond a Swans' offer.

I guess if the alternative is a long term deal worth many millions, then he really is doing us a favour. Odd how some people think.

"While a return back to Western Australia would be expected to land Warner a mega deal in terms of length and pay, a short-term stay at Sydney would see him get through to 2027, when he would reach free agency and with a new Collective Bargaining Agreement set to be in play at the end of that year.

With Tasmania also coming into the competition the following year, the Devils' bids for out of contract players are also expected to inflate the pay market for the best players in the game"

From a financial perspective it makes the most sense, also from a WCE perspective it's almost perfect.

  • Keep their draft picks
  • Pick up Warner as club turns around and drafts get compromised for Tasmania


From a Swans perspective year maybe we don't get as great compo, but 3 years of Warner as we compete for a flag is worth its weight in gold.
