That is massively in Harley's favour.
If his value goes down, he can still stay with Eagles on big money. If his value goes up, he could potentially walk to another club for more.

From a club perspective, makes no sense paying massive amounts of money for only 2 years if nothing locked in beyond.

You are talking about an extremely bad football club trying to sign a native Victorian, up against a bunch of Victorian clubs (some of which are currently very good!) holding out big bags of money. There is no hometown discount here, there is no “sign for less money because we are so close to a flag and I want the club to be able to sign another good player.” The options are to give him a contract that has more years and more money than you’re totally comfortable with, or he walks to Hawthorn or Geelong or whatever and you get back some draft picks in heavily compromised drafts which wont yield a player as good as Harley Reid.

For sure. But keep in mind that the manager is paid by commission and sees a big pay day. We could give Harley $5m for his entire career and he'll live a very nice life.

Cal is the best in this space and he said earlier in the year when we offered the different contracts at $1.6 a year that we are now around the offers that other clubs are offering. He has since said the Hawks offer is at $1.8m and they are obsessed so would be willing to go more by that.

There is normally a go home price which is more then the stay price but due to our situation (1 win and a lot of money coming off our books) no doubt the manager smells blood.

Let’s not forget Harley is still on his rookie deal next year so in his next 3 years at the club his contract would average out to probably $1.5m a year. They will just front end a few more of the contracts on the books for next year.

It's 100% his manager who's driving it, as would be the case with all players who are re-negotiating a contract.

There will also be an incredible amount of data and stats to back the claim up. Harley's marketing potential, his record compared to stars of the game at the same age, his importance to the club and the future salary cap projections will all be valued and make up part of the reason as to how they arrived at this figure.

It won't be a case of his manager sitting around doing nothing all for 2 years then plucking $2m out of the air.

I don't think this is a million miles off - as others have said the big win for us would be pushing to 3+9 and frontloading it. I doubt the figures will change.

Having Harley for a guaranteed 3 years over 2 will help us sell the club to stars in free agency. We need to sell it as a win for both parties.
