Why do we want to make our game more like soccer? Yuck.
Poor rules and interpretations doesn't warrant making the rules worse again.
Out of interest why wouldn’t you want to encourage the ball moving into the corridor rather than the wings if there’s no better option?

Saints only have 8 and 44 for a draft hand so if they want Ryan they'll probably want something back in picks.
Can't see them doing a straight player swap.

something like:

Eagles Out: 19, 32, Ryan
Eagles in: 8, 44, F2?

Would leave us with 1,2,8,14(hawks),44, 50. 4x First rounders, couple of late picks for NGA kids.
Saints still get two bites at the draft with adding Ryan in?

The lasso "last touch" rule is a horrible horrible rule.
I wish nothing but ill will on those proposing it for the AFL.
Will be frightening for teams defending deep in their defensive 50 whenever the ball is close to the boundary. The attacking team will probably be happier to roll the dice and play close to the boundary.

I think switching is a legitimately good tactical option which would be discouraged in this scenario. This would further discourage players from kicking to a one-on-one down the wing as if you overkicked it (or even if both players ran under the ball) it would result in a penalty. I watch the lasso adjudication at the Girls Talent League level and it drives me nuts. A perfectly good kick may have the same results as kicking sideways out-on-the-full, and this may have nothing to do with the kickers ability. We ought to be encouraging kicking to one-on-ones as I think that this is far better as a spectacle.

I otherwise think that ball-in contests on the wing are quite unique and still ought to be encouraged as it demonstrates how good a midfield/midfielder is if they are able to win these more than they lose and encourages a team to think strategically about how they attack scoring opportunities for a congested position. The downside is back-to-back stoppages which have certainly crept in and are not visually appealing. 15-20 seconds and the ball bobbles only for a player to be brought down in a tackle for another ball up. Again, teams improving their defensive abilities has stifled some of the more natural movements from stoppages.

Further, whilst I like corridor movement, I don't want it all the time. It's exhilarating but that's because it works sparingly, not on every occasion. If I wanted it all the time I would play AFL Live or something like that where that seems to be the only strategy. We want each play to be unique and not just a mirror of a previous play we've seen in the same game about ten times before (that's how I feel watching NBA).

And finally, I just loathe soccer. I don't want the sport that I love to move one iota in the direction of mimicking a sport that I hate.

They are all fair points although with respect to the Coates girls I suspect this would look quite different at AFL level.

The SANFL have been doing it and seems to have been received well. I’m not against implementing it and seeing how it looks between the arcs.

Only applies outside the 50m arcs.
So wouldn't come into play unless between the arcs.
Still a stupid rule though.

How many years into the future does Ryan think clubs will offer him in a contract? He has another year with us, i am sure the club would extend that by a year at the end of this year making it two years forward. He is 30 years old with a long injury history. Does he think other clubs will offer him 3 or 4 years? I doubt it.

Afl lets a problem build up too much and then overcorrect, what's new. If they want academies to actually exist and create good footballers, there needs to be a benefit for them or they'll only exist in theory with no actual money or effort put in. To that end, not being able to match first round bids should only be if you make finals. That way we don't have the good teams just getting better all the time, but there's still an ongoing incentive to support your academy.

If they thought the bottom 4 was uncompetitive this year im not sure they know what’s coming.

It’s already borderline impossible with the 666 rule but with a last touch rule, teams that can’t keep up aerobically (young sides) are going to get blown off the park very consistently. Could be some serious records broken next year.

I get they want a quicker, higher scoring game but it’s just not viable unless all 18 teams are full of superstars at the same time.

I think Lyon knows if Saints don't make finals next year he will be moved on.
I don't know about that, all year they have been talking about youth and that they are a young team etc etc

At this point in time he is popular with the Saints fans too which makes messaging easier.

I am not a fan of the last touch rule. It works at lower levels however due to the superior aerobic capacity and running power of developed players it will be a nightmare at afl level. You will have to set up with an extra defensive sweeper at all times. The only way it really works in my opinion is if you go down to 16 on the field.

Do NOT want Starcevich
Why ?
I don't think he is a midfielder but he was fantastic in defence against freo last Friday night.

As long as it is just a late pick I'm all for it . The faster we move away from duggan and cole in defence the better

Would you want to play for a club that ****ed you around like that.
Mitch mcgovern was seriously over paid for many years when he moved from Adelaide on that big deal .

I feel that Carlton are in a very tight spot . Cap maxxed out and bottom 6 . They will need to shed some players to right the books .

Don't be surprised if someone like Sam Walsh who is high paid and cant get on the park is at the hawks or Geelong next season

Tim Watson has gone again.

Ryan done deal to Saints

I’m absolutely fine with any player from our 2018 premiership not being on our list, none of them will be part of our next premiership push, I’d be very comfortable not having Cole, Cripps, Duggan or Ryan on our list.

Cal on Goss show said he is hearing the same murmurings over in Melbourne regarding his deal being ‘done’. Said Vic clubs are still having a crack and he believes there is still a bit to go.
