He was speculating about moving the pick vs anything solid intel. It was his opinion of what could happen IF WCE consider this draft weak.
Top 5 in this draft are very good, but compromised. Would have liked one of Annable, Uwland, Patterson and even Dean this year if it was open.

From early rumours, next year is not so compromised and an extra early (top 5) pick next could be of interest. Would rather St Kilda's for Ryan.

Would be stupid to trade out of this years top 5 for a future 1st.

Mostly agree - depends on context and what's offered in addition to that imo.

If Carlton back themselves to rise next year and want Duursma or Sharp that badly (as a hypothetical), if they offer us their pick 8 and their F1 for pick 2 - I can see the reasoning (weak draft, even cohort, still need to stack F1s to help with the rebuild etc etc).

I still wouldn't want us to do it, though.

still legend status for your info
It helps when the some of the teams supported in this group are Blues, Essendon and Richmond and the group chat is like a 4 way tennis match posting the links with players leaving or linked to ect.

If they get posted on there I just link them on here if they haven’t already.

Starcevich is a much better player than Owies
Maybe. But we don't need any more back flankers.

If we are going to bring in middle aged players who have already hit their ceiling and are nothing more than just bog standard at their position, and give them a 4 year contract and possibly give up draft capital to get them then they need to play a position where we are in dire need and have few alternatives - ruck, big bodied mid or crumbing/defensively handy small forward who can help us lock the ball in the forward line.

Anything other than somebody who plays one of those positions and i would rather pass and put the games into a youngster, keep the draft capital and save the cap space.

Yeah, you’d hope the only reason we have dropped off an Erasmus is because he have someone else locked in. The club has been very vocal publicly they plan on getting depth in the midfield and mature bodies. Rhino just wouldn’t have that intel yet.

Yes, hopefully we have someone in the pipeline. Starcevich would be a good get. He did stipulate at one stage that he wanted to play mid - maybe we will give him that opportunity, would be good protection for HR.

Yeah maybe but still I think we just hit this draft hard.
Problem I have with the draft about this time each year. We start to really want early prospects (think both FOS and Smith this time last year) and have less insight into the quality next year.

For me, it will depend on how many spots we have and if we can get some additional list spots, then we might go for more draftees.

As it stands, I see us using just 4 picks
1 - finishing last
2 - Oscar compo
7 - Hawks 1 and something
25 - our R1 for a speculative
then -- NGA and Banfield (and I expect us to get low level assistance with additional rookie and Cat B spots being able to prelist some of the NGA)

We can't expect Chesser to sign for one year if a club in his home state is offering two years. We will have to make it a two year offer. But maybe he just wants to go home anyway. If he does i would be pretty hard nosed with Carlton. We have invested a fair bit into Chesser and gotten not much return at this point. They will have to give us something of value in return, not a token late draft pick which is probably what they are planning to offer. I am prepared to take the risk of losing him for nothing to the PSD if it backfires.
Isnt he uncontracted now, so he can go where he wants and we have no say?

He's uncontracted, but not delisted. And he's not been in the system long enough to be a free agent, so to move now he'd have to request a trade.

If he's still not contracted at the final list lodgement - which is after the draft (but before the PSD), then he would be delisted. I guess theoretically he could then try and get an SSP spot, but not sure if there's rules to prevent that sort of thing.

If the club makes an offer and it is refused he can NOT be considered a delisted free agent. He has to nominate for the draft.

Victorian clubs seem to benefit from the “go-home factor” from players who come from well across the NSW border.
Albury is on the border of Victoria and NSW (Albury-Wodonga is one of a few twin towns on the border like Echuca-Moama).

Rightly or wrongly these parts of NSW are considered Victorian as far as AFL discourse goes because aussie rules is more popular than league.

Yeah maybe but still I think we just hit this draft hard.

Agree.

Trading one of our early first round picks this year would be counter to the narrative coming out of the Club, that we want to get better as quickly as possible.

If we are committed to that approach, then we use the early pick our self this years.

Even if we trade back we use the draft capital at our disposal NOW.

If we wind up with 1, 2 and 11, but leverage Ryan and 11 into 7, then I could see a case for trading pick 2 if it gets us another top 10 pick and a F1 or a very good player and a F1. Both address the now by having the same number of picks or one less pick and a good player, plus a pick for next year.

Only future firsts I’d want would be Richmond, bombers and maybe the demons. Think they are all likely bottom 5.

Would really prefer we just take it though. Add talent. Give them years in the system. We can’t afford to delay.

We’ll likely have pick 1 or 2 anyway next year.

I hate the idea of kicking the can down the road. Unless we have trade targets that require a split of pick 2.

Pick 2 for Ports 1st, Davies and suns F2.
agree, nothing wrong with the top 5 in the open pool and would be silly not to take as many as we can afford in list spots.
If we need to split 2 for a big fish then take the fish and another top 8-10.

Our soft tissue injury rate seems to have improved significantly since he arrived. Whether part of that is because of the list becoming way younger is an open question.
And the MRP and optus surfaces are finally softening up

So the jungle drums here in Victoria are beating hard and fast that Curnow is gonski.

Surely Pyke is on the phone to the Chad!.

If Warner was staying to win a flag, do you think he would change his mind if they are possibly adding Curnow?

This would have to be a Pav, Cox and who ever their list manager is led thing.
