Would give support for a season or two to the young midfield , because it appears very few top experienced players are heading our way .
I just don't think it's worth getting a mediocre outside midfielder to take time away from the young guys.
We've got experienced midfielders in Graham, Baker (if McQualter wants to use him there) and Yeo (hopefully). If it was someone like Steele to be the in and under guy, I'd be ok with it but I don't reckon we've got the list spots to waste on more list cloggers like Acres.

IF we do a deal with the Blues for pick 2 it would have to include their F1.

10, 21, F1 for 2, F4 and Owies. The list of players I’d want from the Blues is very short and it’s still a shit deal with the pick blow outs.

Owies isn't getting traded back to carlton. I'd like it to happen but yeah

Feel free to stop rewriting history to suit your own agenda.

Rioli was a totally seperate deal that went down to the wire.

Port coughed up a F2nd for Rioli and had nothing to do with the pick 2 split. We wasted that 2nd on Burgiel.

.
Wrong.

The Burgiel pick was from port the year prior when they gave us their F2 to slide back from 12 to 14 and we got Chesser.

If we do somehow manage to get davies do we skip sharp and take duursma and cumming?

I would be hugely surprised if we haven't already pencilled in Sharp at #1 and looking to split 2 for an established player and pick downgrade.

I would be hugely surprised if their decision making on any picks is pencilled in given trade week is yet to come and knowing that we will get offers for pick 1 and 2.

The top 2 in our B&F both being on the list as a result of pick splits doesn't bode well for those not wanting us to do it again

Splitting pick 2 for 8 and 12 in 2022 netted us Ginbey AND Hewett rather than one of Cadman, Wardlaw, Tsatas, Humphrey, Mackenzie or Clark. More than happy with that split

Splitting pick 3 for 12 and 14 netted us Baker, Allan and Gross rather than one of Smith, Draper or Langford. It’s debatable as to whether that was the right decision and depends a lot on the future development of Allan but it’s hardly the dumpster fire some carry on about

This year, I’d prefer to not split and just take who we consider the best two players which shapes as a choice from Duursma, Sharp, Cumming, Lindsay or Duff-Tytler in that order of preference

Unless one of the picks is top 5/6 (which means Essendon or Richmond) plus whatever we shouldn’t be entertaining a split.

In 2022 and 2024 we considered splitting to be to our advantage overall which weakened our bargaining position a little as we were a seller. This year I don’t see the same benefits so as others have mentioned any deal needs to be in our favour as we should be a reluctant seller. Like we were in 2023

Here's the thing. We trade Barrass to Hawks for their R1 & R2, on trade Hawks R1 to Tigers for Baker and we end up with Baker, pick 3 and the R2 which for arguments sake is Gross.

We know future picks are discounted in value, so trading Barrass for hawks future picks is significantly inferior, and getting worse by the week as Hawks progress through finals.

Even if Allan becomes an A-grade player, the trade was still terrible because on the balance of historical draft outcomes, 12 being a better player than 3 is an anomaly. I.e. we are relying on luck!

Anyway, debate has been done to death. My point is, at some point we need to start taking elite talent and not the next tier down. It's no coincidence that the best player on our list also happens to have gone #1 in the draft.

Last week Ryan Daniels on that footy podcast he does with Xavier Ellis sounded pretty convinced that West Coast may use pick 2 to get into next years draft since this years draft isn't that great...well that sounds like a horrible f*cking idea with how this year and Hawthorn panned out.

This years draft may not be that 'great' but it's still picks 1 and 2. If it was the Hawks pick then fair enough.

There would absolutely zero chance Davies leaves GC. He stayed loyal last year despite reported interest from other clubs and he had barely played at that time.

Now he’s not only actually playing but they’ve sacrificed midfield time for Touk Miller and Flanders to accommodate him. Oh and his team is in the finals and with an age profile that’s likely to contend in the coming years.

Can probably say the same for Erasmus (except the team still in finals thing).

Unfortunately, if we want to trade in a young midfielder then we need to be prepared for the likes of Will Phillips. In other words, just draft Sharp.

Here’s the thing

Hawthorn’s R1 and R2 was never put on the table for Barrass - from memory their initial offer was their R1 and F2 for Barrass and our F3 which we quite rightly rejected. They then went out and traded their R1 to Carlton which we had no control over and massively pissed off TB’s manager

No argument from me that trading Barrass for R1 and R2 would’ve been a better result than what eventuated but the reality is it was never available to us as an option.

So you're hanging your hat on "it wasn't R1+R2, it was R1+F2"? That R1 would still have netted us Baker.
So what exactly are you disagreeing with?

It was R1+F2 with our F3 going back and it was an initial offer. Supporters would’ve been quite rightly upset if the club had accepted that trade in the first week. There would have been an expectation that a more favourable deal could be negotiated prior to the trade deadline

Then Hawthorn traded their R1 pick to Carlton which scuppered the plan to on trade that R1 to Richmond for Baker. It forced us to change our trade/draft strategy that ultimately led us to splitting pick 3

Now we could have, and arguably should have, told Richmond that our best offer for Baker was the Hawthorn F1 pick but that trade wasn’t finalised until the last 30 minutes because Hawthorn held out as long as possible to force us to accept their offer that they only increased at the death

Hawthorn trading their R1 pick screwed us and it meant that the preferred result that you posted wasn’t ever really available

That’s what I’m disagreeing with

So who's this year's Rowell/Anderson combo?

Don't overthink this.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news I just don't think there are 2 midfielders of that potential in this years draft. (outside of Annable I think he can be that tier of player)

My personal opinion barring injury is the club only has 2 guaranteed next gen mids on the list in Harley and Hewett. Maric i'm 100% willing to say is a genuine wing for the club long term however I think McCarthy is best played back, so is Hough and Ginbey.

Hopefully Bo or Charlie Banfield can be the other wing but to me it still leaves us 4 very good prospects short of a future midfield.
