The fact that we're trying to circumvent free agency rules to get Starcevich without trading with Brisbane makes me think they are demanding something significant for him. Dont think Hawks second or third gets it done.
What's the alternative? We don't get him and Brisbane are stuck with him? He's a free agent.

So with the draft assistance package likely not to include the ability to get a FA (Starcevich) without effecting our band 1 for Oscar, how do we play this? If he is keen to come.

Do we have to do a deal with Brissy to make sure they match and we then trade for him?
Just because he is a free agent doesn't mean he has to exercise his free agency rights

Chances of Chesser for Moir straight swap? Both kind of risky picks that may never live up to their potential? Moir ended up going around pick 30 from what I can remember and Chesser's lack of continuity would have had his pick 15 or so value slide back to a player around the mid second round I would have thought. I know at one point Moir had big raps and possible top 10 or so but then slid. He was an eagles fan growing up in Adelaide yeah? Maybe a Ryan/Chesser blend that could kinda replace some parts of both of them?

I think Brisbane know we blow pick 2 if we get him via free agency and are rightfully demanding a first rounder for him, hence our request for a first round priority pick.

Richmond got pick 42 as compensation for Jack Graham. I would put Liam Ryan on a par with Graham. So if we trade him for a second rounder from St Kilda then we are effectively giving him away now for something only very marginally better (by maybe 5 or so spots in the draft better) than what we would get if we kept him for another year and then let him go as a free agent.

So we don't put an offer in front of him

This is what I would do, Chesser for Moir.
Moir at worst is Brockman, best is Ryan lite.

Good way to do it though. That pick will end up being eaten up for points with the Annabel bid so it won't actually impact any other clubs. If Brisbane wanna be tough about say there will be a a bid at pick 1

Chesser > Carlton for late 2nd/Early 3rd

Liam Ryan + Chesser pick > Windhager

Fair?

Sure he left Richmond for more midfield time because Richmond refused to play him in the midfield because he is slow , cant find the ball and is an average kick.

But yeah he really moved the needle for us

He came in to play a role and did.

Earned his pay which is more than quite a few have lately. (Kelly Im looking at you).

But if you want to be a negative dick about it thats your perogative. Enjoy.

I would much rather have had Matthew Johnson on our list than Campbell Chesser.
I still remember that draft, thinking great we are definitely going to pick Johnson, and then having to read to find out who the hell Chesser was.
Yep Johnson was a real surprise slider. We would’ve just taken Erasmus but jumped two spots above Freo on the ladder late in the season from memory. Sheldrick was also still available a few picks after Chesser also

Brisbane don't hold any cards over the Eagles on this. They have as much to lose as we would if they went down that path.

We can simply match on Oscar and force Brisbane into a trade.

We can also bid on there kids in the draft and force them to pay up.

If we force a trade though we are giving up pick 2. They aren't going to offer up anything better than that as they dont have great draft picks

And after rorting the system yet again getting 2 x free agents plus the best mid in the draft as an academy pick the Lions bend us over do they?

We wont make a free agency offer for obvious reasons. We offer a pick in the 30s at the absolute most and simply wait to the end of trade period to close the deal. Take it or leave it. If you dont accept he can get to us anyway.

Lions are so far ahead this trade and draft period its an absolute joke. Good to see AFL equalisation policies in full swing........

2nd rounder is about right for Flyin Ryan so to get it in next year’s draft is a better result than to have it in this year’s shallow crop.
100% keep ryan we will still get something via free agency next year
