Eagles must take hardball stance on Chesser trade
The Eagles need to play hardball at the trade table and bring something valuable back the other way for Campbell Chesser because their outlay on him, both in draft capital and persistence, has been great.thewest.com.au
Another Eagle wants to fly the coop.
West Coast’s top draft pick from 2021, Campbell Chesser, has officially requested a trade to the Blues, joining Liam Ryan and Oscar Allen as notable players set to join rivals this offseason.
It continues a worrying trend of top-30 draft picks that just haven’t worked.
Not a single one of West Coast’s top draft picks from 2015 to 2021 will be at the club next season, and only three of any draftees taken between 2016 and 2020 will be there.
Now, to avoid losing out on another significant investment, the Eagles need to play hardball and bring something valuable back the other way, because their outlay on Chesser, both in draft capital and persistence, has been great.
Chesser has been an injury-prone speedster who’s managed only 36 games in four seasons, and impressed in less than half of those.
So West Coast must stay firm in negotiations with Carlton.
The Blues have little to offer in the way of picks, with Hawthorn already having their first-rounder, which West Coast poorly gave up in favour of the Hawks’ first pick last year.
So a player swap is the most likely option. The Blues could be reluctant, given they have Jack Silvagni and Tom De Koning leaving, but nimble WA small forward Jesse Motlop, at just 21, could be an option.
He has had his injury trouble, though.
The other option is to use the compensation pick the Blues could get for De Koning leaving, which is expected to be band one, meaning pick eight, as it’s tied to the selection they would have had for their position on the ladder.
However, the deal would also likely need to be complicated by a pick split, as pick eight is likely too high for Chesser.
West Coast were undoubtedly out-maneuvered at the trade table last season, accepting a below-par offer for premiership defender Tom Barrass, which also saw them give up pick three for Liam Baker.
Baker won the club’s best and fairest for a reason, but the Eagles have been soft on trades.
Ryan will be another chance for the fallen giants to play hardball. The 28-year-old is still a talented player with plenty to give at the club.
If West Coast can’t turn Ryan and a late first-rounder into the Saints’ pick 7, then they need to be prepared to make the forward honour his contract.
AFL is a selfish business, and a player-first trade approach is clearly not working.

Glad they qualified that with a 'likely'

It wasn't me.So who from here wrote that?
Hits all the BF tropes
• West Coast chose poorly taking Hawthorn’s picks instead of Carlton’s
• Points out Chesser only played 36 games most of which were unimpressive but then includes pick 8 in a possible trade which would likely involve complicated pick splits
• Accepted a below par offer for Barrass
• Gave up pick 3 for Baker
• Ryan and a late R1 pick is worth pick 7 and should be held to his contract otherwise
Over values our departing players and misrepresents prior trades whilst adding in the hindsight hero view of the pick choice
He has to post on this board or at least read it
Wasn’t me. No mention of that perennial turncoat Don PykeSo who from here wrote that?

I mean, what he's written isn't unreasonable. Seems rather valid to me.So who from here wrote that?

Nah. There was a in-office vote to whether they included him or not but they couldn't be counted. No mention of jack watts.
Myth busted.
I may be wrong here but if a player decides to leave a club when uncontracted they can get on another clubs list as an SSP, dont need to go through the PSD if they cant get a trade done? The WCE has the number 1 PSD pick is the key to negotiate for Chesser's trade. Chesser cannot walk to Carlton through PSD. (though PSD draftees has the right to specify some contractual pay related conditions.) The Eagles have the option to match the differences.
If they are offered a contract by their current club and refuse it then they have to go through the draft (Chesser). If they are delisted (Petch) they can walk to any club.I may be wrong here but if a player decides to leave a club when uncontracted they can get on another clubs list as an SSP, dont need to go through the PSD if they cant get a trade done?
My understanding is that SSP is also a form of draft with pick order .I may be wrong here but if a player decides to leave a club when uncontracted they can get on another clubs list as an SSP, dont need to go through the PSD if they cant get a trade done?

Wow - so we didn't take many first round selections over the years we were playing finals and winning a flag. That's how the system is supposed to work.
