Traded Liam Ryan [Traded with 2027 R3 to St Kilda for 2026 R2 (Stk)]

I'd have put more stock in him agreeing with me on Ryan's value if he didnt follow it up with 34 for Chesser...
Ryan is worth F2/F3 and Chesser is worth 34. That's new.

Are we valuing players based on how many games they have played now?
He's pretty much looked at what both clubs have and said "that'll do". It's lazy journalism.

Reckon Ryan fits well into the St Kilda team, could get back to some of his better form.
He had a pretty good year this year. Lack of supply let him down.

Yeah he wasn't too bad from what I saw of him this year, I think the supply he receives from the St Kilda midfield will help him elevate his game again.

If we have King, Marshall, Sharman, Higgins, & Owens/Hall he might not get much direct supply.

I just don't think he's been that great over the last four years and I don't think he's the age demographic that the club should be chasing.

He seems like the type a top four club should be chasing for a bit of icing on the cake.

Each to their own though
Fair enough about his age but if you do get him I'm confident he'll be a fan favourite in no time.

I think most Saints fans see Marshall's value as around pick 15, and Ryan's as between 25-35. So mid first rounder, mid second rounder.

The problem with Marshall to the Cats is your pick is likely to fall around pick 25 after compo and F/S and Academy picks. Hence why we are asking for a little more. I'm sure if you added a F2 to that pick, it would get done day one of trade period. If you added a pick around 35-45, it would get accepted if it seals another deal. And if you dug your heals in on a first by itself, we'd probably rather take Marshall into next year and see how he goes with TDK

The problem with Ryan is a little more simple, in that we don't have a pick between 25-35 this year, hence why we're offering a F2. I get the feeling that WC are happy to accept this, and we're happy to pay it, as it seems like Ryan wouldn't have nominated us so early if he wasn't confident a deal was pretty much already done.
Pick 25 isnt a mid second rounder, thats a late first rounder these days.

Most west coast fans would be fairly content if we got what was actually pick 25-30 in the draft for Ryan - which would be a late first round pick due to academies and f/s

I presume they are talking about the pick when the trade is completed.

Pre draft night and during the trade period, pick 25 is a second rounder.

Yes, it gets pushed back a fair way come draft night but we don't have control over that.

Pick 25 on draft night is fair for Liam Ryan. A relatively small price for what you get

Pick 25 before draft night is a waste of a trade for us, itd be in the mid 30s at best. That 35 as the lower end of the range suggested would be even more of a disgrace, pick 40+ for a pretty good forward you are offering several years to? Just ****ing lol.

But we all know about it, so it can be accounted for.

And that is part of a problem, picks in the thirties and beyond become very speculative. Around 1 in 4 become decent AFL players. Some drafts better than others

As an example the 2022 draft which i picked at random, the 30 to 40 selections at this stage looks like very slim picking

Cowan, Van Es, Binns, H Davies, McMullin,, Hotton, McCallum, Hustwaithe, Adams, Gallagher, Mitchell

Were handy for Points as part of the OLD DVI though.

Well you aren't getting a late first for Ryan. I'd be happy to put my balls ok the line and guarantee that.

It sucks when your pick gets diluted by a number of father son and academy picks, but that's the world we live in.

No arguments from me there, that's why some clubs are pushing for zero academy and father sons to be taken in the first round.

Unfortunately for now it's just the cards that are dealt. It doesn't mean clubs are willing to hand over first rounders for the likes of a Liam Ryan.

A saints fan said 25-35 was fair, thats a late first to early 2nd this year bud, not a mid 2nd rounder like most saints fans want to throw at what would their 2nd or 3rd best forward in 2026.
Sounds pretty insulting to me tbh

As I said, I presume he was talking about where the pick sits prior to the draft.

Right now, pick 25 is not a late first. It might end up that's where a late first finishes up come draft night, but not when the trade is completed.

I'm sorry that you are insulted by what I think his trade value is, but I'd be gob smacked if we gave up a first rounders for him.

Well I presume he was talking like a reasonable person and the picks were the real spot where those picks land, because that far more accurately reflects his value.

It is a late first, we know this is the case, dont play dumb

Agree, a player is far more preferable, any of the saints players suggested by Eagles fans would make more sense for us.

I'm sorry, but you are wrong here.

When a trade is done during trade period, we refer to where the pick sits.

Eagles might push for a player, that would make sense from then if there is a player prepared to move.

But I'm adamant St Kilda will not be trading a first round pick for him. I'll stop derailing this thread now, but feel free to bookmark my posts and tell me I'm wrong if it happens.

All picks are relative to draft order and perceived strength of draft.

The first pick of the 2024 draft was pick 28. Before Gold Coast came in that was almost a third round pick.

If we got "pick 25" for Liam Ryan and it ends up at 35 then we're just exchanging the player for a chance to pick the 35th best player in this year's draft. Is that preferable to one more year of Ryan? Arguable.

The problem with the AFL's half arsed system is that all player trades have to be done before the draft but pick swaps and bids and whatnot continue.

True

But from a West Coast perspective with Ryan being contracted there is not a lot of worth regarding a list that is already the youngest to lose one of their better players for what may be slightly better than a token pick in a couple of years.

Mind you much to the frustration of our fans we seem to be a bit of such touch when it comes to trading

But we all know as much as you dont want to admit for some reason(**** knows why) what that pick is worth knowing approx how many academy kids, f/s and whatever else is in there. Also the relative strength of the draft - which is low.

Clubs arent ******ed

Nothing im saying is derailing this thread LOL im just being realistic about one of our best players value

Few eagles posters in here adamant it had to be that way and F2 was a worthless pick.

F2nd is worth more than a 2025 2nd due to the compromised draft this year.

If the AFL lockout the 1st round next year then 2nd round picks will retain their value.

A F2nd likely falls where a late 1st falls in 2025. In likely a better draft less compromised.

We don’t have a 2025 second.

And when mentioned were routinely met with, no it has to be a first or a pick upgrade.

Yes, if it's a pick from this year's draft.
No, it wasn’t. It was demands for some of our kids and pick upgrades.

Infact if you go back 10-12 pages. I actually said an F2 would be fair.

I was met with this 😂

Pretty low value and I’d be telling Liam to get a club that really wants you or he is staying out West.

I’m still in the camp of helping you cash in your pick 8. Two options
1. Liam and Hawks R1 allowing you to get Phillipou Mark II as well
Or
2. Liam and 2 x R2.picks for allowing you to turn pick 8 into Liam, the first pick on day, plus a pick for Aleek.

There again it is Gubby and SOS so buckle in and be prepared for a scrap.

From my assessment of the draft board, what I want for West Coast is likely to be with your R1 but I’d go a different direction with the Hawks R1. Based more on needs than absolute talent
