Well Hawthorn have to pay up if they want a contracted captain. Surely all the Hawks fans in here writing sob stories about Merrett's time at Essendon would be oh so glad to meet Essendon's demands so poor Merrett can get out of the club and contend. Right?

Fans overvalue stars but the trade table doesn’t.

The go-home factor is a completely different scenario then wanting to be traded to a cross town rival for success. I’d expect most players at some point to at least consider the go home option, to turn that down at stay at the club that drafted you shows much more commitment than this current situation. But keep fishing for for more reasons to diminish our club.
Not really sure it is called fishing when they just keep jumping into our arms

The more I think about it, the more I think there's no way this can look good for Merrett unless a trade goes through - he's turning 30 this year. If they hold him to his 2027 contract he'll be 32 and it'll be tough getting into a new club at that age unless you're in top form.

Since when ? Not since Mitchell has been coach!

True. Mitchell is a lot more friendlier to media than Clarko was.

Still, for the most part we keep our cards close to our chest.

I reckon it's draft picks the are overvalued more. Yeah sure the top handful are the real gold overall but once you move down it really is a flip of the coin on what your going to get.

I’m just hanging out for a club to say you are contracted and you will play for us at the levels you have set and see out the contract you signed.
There has to be at some point of time a club that says we are sick to death of you players thinking you can do whatever you like whenever you like.
And if he refuses to play then they simply don’t pay him.
It’s time clubs made a stand.

Pretty sure this has already happened at least a couple of times. Should players make a stand when clubs put them up for trade?

It's a nice sentiment.

If you tried to quit your job and your boss wouldn't let you, do you think you would go into work every day and give 100% ?

I get what you are saying and I agree. So trade him out to not the club of his choice for the best draft picks you can get. Why do him any favours at all?
Trade him to the Eagles for pick 2 as an example and tell Zach and his manager that we have done the deal with the Eagles and you guys need to talk to them now to get to hawks.

Absolutely agree with this - it's slated too far towards the players and clubs get screwed. Free trading should have come in with free agency.

It could come but the pay rises players would want to agree would be enormous. It’s really just not worth the cost.

People compare to American sports but it’s not even in the same stratosphere.
The average NBA salary is now around USD $8m per year. In the MLB it’s around $5m.

These guys are earning like 20x more than AFL players. It’s a totally different ball game.

For sure. Can't really compare them - bigger markets - in NBA's case significantly less players on any roster.

Anyway not to derail the thread but Essendon will probably get shafted for value here if he goes.

Do Essendon even want him back at this point?

Essendon continue to release statements that there will be no trades.

Next step is he doesnt show at the B&F and then all hell breaks loose - including the revoting of games to have him finish 2nd not a clear 1st.

It will be a ****ing shambles.

Mitchell would sell his grandmother into slavery if it meant improving his list.
He really is a legitimate Villian isn't he.

He manages to keep a calm and measured public demeanour and manner, so it flies under the radar.

But he's the biggest Villian in the game hands down.

100% agree. However I think the real issue holding this approach back is the incestuousness of the Player Management space.

What an absolute load 😂

Literally every team is talking to contracted players. Pyke played golf with Warner. Fagan met with Allen.
Lyon met with TDK.

Essendon have offered Ramsden a contract? Is Brad Scott a villain?
