Collingwood being in the running for Petracca and Hawthorn for Merrett and us Eagles fans looking at the club like

Are we sure the club even has a pulse at this stage?
We're not in Melbourne and these guys are too scared to move 20 mins from where they grew up, let alone the other side of the country.

Lots of eastern states media putting out trade scenarios for Merrett resulting in Essendon getting two high first rounders or two first rounders (with one being high) plus a player. They are not going to get that IMO. It's a forced sale. Essendon can't walk away from the table because they have already said they don't want him back at the club and the other sides know that. I think they will have to take just one first rounder for him and it may not even be top 10.

I reckon they will get two because the suitor is a contender. There may be other suitors emerge but a "future first" from Hawthorn could be pick 27. In a real draft that's a mid second round pick.

Because it's Essendon they are more likely to not trade him out of spite/holding out for a ridiculous offer than let him go for a discount.

I feel Merritt will stay as essendon like us need players more than picks . Essendon will already have enough picks .

Hawks will trade Carltons first for petracca and maybe something else but petracca still has 1.4mill per year x 4 on his contract so Melbourne should be happy to get that off the books .

Melbourne should then look to bring in Davies or Phillips as cheap inside mid options and hit the draft hard .
Not a hope in hell merrit stays at essendon, he's definitely gone.

To be fair, we’re not in a position to be attracting great players unfortunately and we’re also not in the position to be trading high end picks for players either unless they are under 24 and are established stars, so it makes it very difficult.

Hitting the next two drafts before Tasmania come in should be our number 1 priority whilst also adding solid role players in the mean time.

2027 is when we launch our assault on luring players, hopefully land Warner as FA too.

Well I'd not want to touch Merrett with a 10,000 foot pole after what he's doing right now (even though I'm always for a bit of undermining Essendon). He sounds a lot like poison.

Petracca - well our best selling point to him would be that if he played for us, Harley wouldn't be fending him off.

The reality though is that players moving in the Melbourne fishbowl is easy enough, but moving to Perth isn't so easy. There's so much more to it than just changing the drive to a new training ground.

(Players move north from Vic to get out of the fishbowl, not something that works moving west to Perth or Adelaide)

after last year i have zero trust clarke can get a decent return on 1 or 2 or our future firsts.

Just dawned on me that the Duursma kids first initials are the alphabet going backwards, and was wondering if the parents were planning on having 26 kids and just gave up 4 in coz they're kinda pea-hearted and that's where the kids get it from with their go home trade requests.

indeed. with the hand we have it makes no sense to trade down.
taking duursma is a no brainer.

imagine not taking a guy because your scared he turns out good and we may have to pay him. looks like vic media antics are too much for some to handle. harls ptsd i guess.
More that we spend 3 years developing just to lose him and get lesser picks during tassie compromised drafts.

We need to nail this year and next before tassie comes in

I don't think will duursma will stay .

His brother xavier requested a trade in contract and his other brother zane looks to be doing the same .

Atm essendon have picks 4 5 22 25 and what compo they get for draiper .

They don't need picks .

What essendon need is a fit list and senior players .

If anything essendon should be the club chasing flanders / petracca/ marshall / worpol .

It goes

Xavier
Yasmin
Zane
Willem

So looks like Willem was the unplanned one, although they could have gone A to wrap around to the start of the alphabet again 🤷‍♂️

This is just pure speculation on your behalf. Xavier recommitted to port and then his form tailed off and was in and out of the team. Port and him basically were mutually happy to move on, it’s not a case of him hanging the interstate team to dry.

Yasmin was one of the few who literally was happy to go interstate (due to her brother being there , granted).

Zane situation again is not a case of getting out of town, it’s because norf are a toxic club who have a toxic coach and keep having rifts with players.

Being afraid to take best player in the draft due to fear of him leaving is true cuck behaviour.

For all our faults, eagles are typically very good at creating a good environment for its players.

We may as well resign ourselves to an eternity of mediocrity if we start buying into the vic centric agenda.

Maybe we are into player X, Y, or Z and that's been confused with Willem?

Speculation that the duursma's aren't 1 club players ?

I don't really rate outside players with such high picks . The similarities with the lizard and will Hoskin-elliot are there . Not saying they aren't good players just not pick 1 material

Both his brothers have under delivered on what their talent promised

How’s Willem Duursma an outside player when he’s a very good contested player both on the ground and aerially?

I really don’t get the notion that Xavier Duursma is some sort of big bust, he was like a pick 17, he wasn’t some highly touted superstar, he has had a solid career, he also didn’t run from Port due to being homesick, he moved because they didn’t want him anymore and wanted BZT.

Zane was an obvious tweener, plays like a key forward except he’s undersized and completely reliant on unsustainable contested marking, I was shocked he went as high as he did, especially when it was North that picked him.

Willem is exactly what a pick 1 should be, someone with freakish upside, someone who has a great junior resume, someone who had a good carnival and someone who has showed he can hang with men at VFL level.

True but we should be in a position to convince young midfielders that are not getting regular midfield time at their current club as well as a Neale type trade for a short term fix given the salary cap advantage we have.

We can't have midfield depth of Yeo, Kelly, Reid, Graham, Hewett the same as the start of this year going into next IMO

I don't see an inside game . Whenever he has played inside he doesn't look clean or willing to put his body on the line .

Yes he is a very good mark

The problem is that the draft and the salary cap were designed to serve as equalization measures to help keep the competition balanced and successful clubs shouldn't stay successful forever. But smart clubs have worked out that being successful is a selling point and are using it to lure players on lower coin. The likes of Petracca or Merrett are never coming to the Eagles because Hawthorn and Collingwood are in a premiership window and we are not.

The unbalanced draw just makes it worse. Why wouldn't you go to Collingwood? You'll get to play at the MCG most weeks, you get to play in the biggest games each year, you'll have hardly any travel and there is a fair chance Eddie's going to open a few doors to any business opportunities or media jobs you might be looking for. AND they are currently successful and in a their window, so you might also snag a premiership. Why wouldn't you take a pay cut for that sort of opportunity? Particularly if you are already 28-29 and had plenty of time to build up your finances.
