It's a flat-out nothing story that could have come from any club. The poor little players didn't like being lectured and complained to the players association who then lectured the club. They are the problem, not the club.

The only question I would have was were individual players singled out in front of the group, which is pretty inappropriate.

However, reading between the lines with this and some other stories, it seems like the AFLPA is taking a line of “you can’t tell the players what to do”. If a club did want to take a stand on illicit drugs they would be severely hamstrung I think.

If does make you wonder what clubs are supposed to do. They cop the shit when a West Coast or Melbourne type situation arises, but it also seems like they’re expected to tip toe around the issue if they do want to address it. Seems like clubs are damned if they do, damned if they don’t when it comes to drugs.

Last country grand final I went to had a great atmosphere, but was definitely like stepping back in time 30 years some of the stuff that was seemingly still acceptable out there.

Put it this way, Rankine would not have had a case to answer if he played in that league.
You hear that stuff at an afl game. A Collingwood supporter near me got kicked out for calling someone a f***** (amongst other things) the same game Rankine got done. I'm surprised it didn't come out that week and the only reason I could think of is security didn't hear that part and kicked him out for other reasons. It was very ironic

Shuestar13 can you explain why West Coast are not walking Brandon Starcevich to the PSD and are instead going to hand over a first round pick for him?

My suspicion is that there are some unwritten rules that the AFL subtly enforces around trading with other clubs, that prevent clubs from using the PSD in that fashion. Otherwise, why would the Eagles even consider a trade at all given they hold the number 1 pick?

I think we only got away with it with Hately because the AFL was satisfied with the trade we offered.

I think that this priority pick that the Eagles will use in the trade was always intended to be used as a loophole to allow them to keep the Allen compensation which is likely pick 2. Essentially, the AFL are sneakily getting away with giving the Eagles pick 2 as a PP, without officially doing so.

This is all just me reading between the lines though, but I think it’s wise not to take anything the AFL does on face value.

Absolutely. Likely one more head knock from retirement. Certainly wouldn’t entertain a first rounder.
Even without the head knocks you wouldn’t for a small/medium defender surely.

Maximim value for him is this year as next year they could be trying to mach 20+ million dollar very long term deals to force a trade
20 mil?

Imagine the pick you'd get from the AFL for free agency that way.

That kind of value is like, the first 5 picks

Thats the rub though, the best they would get is band 1 which would be right after their own 1st. Its not out of the realms to see Victorian clubs literally tripping over themselves with offers for him and 10 years at $2 million a year 'could' be on the cards

Trade him this year though and they could command 3 1sts with 1 or 2 being top 10 for sure.

In fact, if Port did drop a bomb on the trade period saying for the right offer they would consider it, just imagine how many other players currently being courted by the Vic clubs would get dropped like hot cakes so they could try for Butters.

I cannot answer that 🤷‍♂️ We seem very reluctant to use the threat of the PSD. Have to maintain “good trading relations” or some such ideals. We are hoping its Pick 23 and nothing higher!

Very big risk. We are desperate. The opportunity to get a good player, leaving the back to back premiers to come to us is something the club is not going to turn down. Cap space is not an issue. If it is just one draft pick, well so be it and hope for the best.

This has been the suspicion all along 😆

They should do that in bad faith then, and not trade him.

Just to waste their time.

Not enough of the on field nastiness making it into the trade week, I reckon.

Imagine that..then 3 minutes to go before trade window closure, they say,, nah, we've changed our minds and he is staying next year.....it would blow up the AFL if that happened as al these last second trades that were put on the back burner suddenly fired up

Why are the details of the infractions not being disclosed.

We knew the font the Tippett emails were written in.

Heaven forbid we would be able to benchmark punishment v crime.

So they didn't tell the AFL about third party sponsorship deals but were also within the cap?

Wasn't that also an issue with the Tippett scandal with us?
Ooooh that slap on the wrist must have really hurt.

Oh jeez.

Scorpus and 1970crow on the money again.

"However, Geelong were found not to have breached the AFL’s total player payments limit or any player movement rules, simply that arrangements hadn’t been disclosed in a timely manner or, in some cases, at all."

Didn't we lose 2 years worth of 1st and 2nd round draft picks for the same thing - ie Tippett was a 3rd party payment but we did not exceed the salary cap? Can the crows sue the AFL to get 2 1st ad 2nd round draft picks back as comepnsation?

Almost screams double standards

Oh yeah - I believe that as much as i believe Nancy Pelosi is just really lucky on the stock market.
