Analysis Conspiracy theories surrounding Geelong's list management and salary cap

Even Lordo reckons it was a soft outcome.

What utter sensationalist drivel. Let's see all the other clubs submit to the same level of scrutiny we have just experienced and then we'll talk.

The most salient lesson from this whole sorry episode is that envy and jealousy are still enormously powerful drivers for how most people think and feel.

I saw a headline about Peter Daicos 'storming out' of the BnF, the use of evocative words like this only has one purpose, they've lost any sense of reporting and it is purely sensationalism.

It's not a Geelong media bias, it's just that the AFL media love to stoke controversy, because that gets the most engagement. They've finally got something to talk about regarding Geelong which is not the boring story of how well we're run, now it's trouble in paradise.
This exactly. Where I live I've seen it for decades in the international political space. Words carry emotive responses; writers, or editors, choose them carefully.
Another example is this steering the narrative with language is Smith's "outburst". What does that word conjure in your mind? That's the point.

The AFL investigation did not find Geelong had breached the salary cap – known as Total Player Payments (TPP) – and Hocking brushed aside talk his club was going around the salary cap to sign players.
“I think other clubs were starting to question, ‘How do you get access to these players?’,” he told SEN.
“They don’t understand how frugal we are when it comes to managing our list and our TPP. We are really frugal on that front.”

100% using the word ‘outburst’ and ‘abuse’ until it becomes the only way people describe an incident and when people don’t witness this, it paints the picture. Very different narrative if the words used were ‘confronts’ or ‘has a disagreement’. But that’s all a bit boring when it comes to reporting the news.
What did I see today? ‘AFL great thinks Collingwood needs to address the DeGoey problem’
As if the media isn’t aware with his history that makes you think he’s been up to no good again. Nope it’s just Kane saying they should trade him coz he doesn’t play enough.

Edit: I’ve just seen another headline on SEN
“Tiptoeing around” how cats boss handles Bailey Smith.

Full quote is “It’s not about tiptoeing around someone like Bailey but more about tailoring it accordingly”

Wonder if the Saints will get this level of scrutiny in 5 years time while they are spend heavy now, or does that only happen if they have success.

Social media and reddit have been hilarious the last few days. I will see a post about a trade, for example that lad who has gone from Saints to Melbourne, and the comments are ALL about Geelong.
We haven't just broke Hok, or Triggies, we have broken everyone :tearsofjoy:

I'm going to admit that I am very disappointed with the club's handling of this latest matter that ended up resulting in a fine from the AFL.

Also, I don't like the subtle shift of culture that the arrival of Baz seems to be ushering in.

Time to tighten up and return to form.

Well since you asked

1. Freak ground
2. Government funded
3. Hocking changed the rules to suit the handbaggers
4. Then went back to the club holy hell
5. No salary cap at all
6. Can’t wait for the book to come out about the weapon;
7. Mark Thompson.

That’s enough to chew on for now

Your salty tears are delicious, enjoy being in a dumpster for 3 decades 🤣🤣🤣

I understand your unease about Baz, but the club has handled the audit OK. They were in a no-win situation due to the long-running conspiracies about our success.

Can I ask in what way - in terms of there being an issue in the first place or in terms of agreeing to the audit?

A key reason for the audit was multiple other clubs raising questions with the AFL over our handling of different situations - a lot of that is from recent trade periods, but I'm not sure it wouldn't have turned out favorable had we told the AFL we wouldn't agree to the additional audit

A player being gifted a bottle of wine from a sponsor and not correctly informing the club for reporting purposes is a rather minor issue

Yep but why be sloppy? Just do these things properly. Don’t give the vultures an opening.
I understand they would still be sooking it up if we were spotless, but don’t need extra noise.

There will be a massive amount of "Self-reporting" of minor reporting infringements from clubs between now and the start of the 2026 season. Every club would have things that have happened at the scale that Geelong got fined over and there will be a lot of scrambling in the background to get ahead of any AFL audit to avoid the bad press.

You've captured it nicely. Pure envy, we all feel it at times, but it can do a lot of damage if unchecked and this is pervasive.

Amen, brother.

It's small poppy lopping - the "big" clubs resent us angling to become one of them, the "small" clubs resent us for proving you can change.

Either way, we're not staying in our assigned lane of the bumbling - if entertaining - country yokels.

And the media more than ever are driven by click/rage bait. We're prime material for that.

I suppose the only disappointment I felt was SHocking even acknowledging the conspiracy theories exist; that's not how you make them go away.

One of the "7 deadly sins"!

Our nation and the West are swimming in a swamp, as we turn our back on God completely.

It's what is to be expected.

Individuals perish and the well is poisoned for everybody.

Tragic.

Is the same swamp that Trump claimed he was draining? Or a different one?

Let me guess - you saw Max Holmes's kicking on Grand Final day and thought, "It's always the fault of the left".

Do you think they will detail what was found. Not who was involved just what the offences were. The largest one I picked up on was a car for one of the AFLW players - a 1985 Ford Laser with retreads?

Bottle of wine received by the club as a gift.
Training camp for academy players held at the property of someone with an official capacity at the club, for which fair value was not paid.

Accommodation gifted from sponsor to player/s in Qld was also mentioned

Just been to a footy tipping wind up dinner.
Good fun but we are not a popular club these days and plenty have brought into the ‘rorting’ and unfair advantages theories. It’s a bit annoying actually. Think people won’t be happy till we have a couple of years down the bottom! Stuff em.
