Is he really a good fit for Melbourne?

He's only 192cm so he's not the big KPF size tall target they really need. The Dees already have blokes like Van Rooyen or even Fritsch (who plays taller than he is) to fill that medium forward role.

The guy gives 110% every game.
Throws his body into everything.
Unfortunately, all that has meant his body is fairly banged up.

Probably telling the Pies we’re ok to see him set himself up in his final years elsewhere.

But, I think he will be ok for Melbourne.

I don't think there was much choice after the Pies ponied up for Elliott.
You know how much we are paying Elliott? Hardly think it alters the dial.
$600k is not far from average salary over the next 2 years.

What's been reported is it went from $450k to $650k. It may be a small increase compared to what others are getting but it may be enough to swap out a Mihocek for a draftee wage.
The club was never going to negotiate with Mihocek. His body has been severely banged up, and actually, the club didn't want to give him more than 1 year.

Elliott was always going to be looked after. $450k was a ridiculous offer for a guy who not only kicked 60 goals, but has been a match winner for a few years now. Even $600k is unders.

Weird deal for Melbourne.

A player they could have got for nothing, just probably lose some or all of the Spargo compo (Pick 42), but a F3rd AND paying a bigger pick than they get back, doesn't seem like they gained at all from that, unless they need Pick 42 to be part of the Petracca trade with Gold Coast.

This is the only way it makes sense. Spargo comp pick has value to a club needing to match a bid this year and GC is that club.

Melbourne have publicly written off most of this draft from a depth and quality perspective both through their trade with Essendon last year and commentary this year, so they surely aren’t wanting to use the Spargo comp pick on drafting a player.

I'm not fully comprehending the hate for the deal?

Mihocek was still Collingwood's second highest goalkicker this season. Pickett was the only Demon that kicked more goals from Melbourne.

Mihocek plays taller than he is and Melbourne's key forwards did not offer a lot this season (Petty 20 goals and Van Rooyen 16). Mihocek also gives his all, makes the most of his opportunities and puts pressure on (laid more tackles this season than any Melbourne forward not named Pickett).

Even those sating he is cooked/finished - maybe I haven't looked closely enough and he did have a quiet final month, but before that, he still had kicked multiple goals in 6 of the 7 previous weeks - and produced an overall season consistent with his career averages.

I get he is not a superstar and is quite old but they paid almost nothing for him. 3rd rounders these days typically mean very little. He should go OK for a season or 2 while they develop a longer term solution.

Yep. Very underrated player and a toe injury hampered him late this year. If he gets a clear injury run he won’t let anyone down.

Yeah, that's presumably it. Not even for GC...at a guess the compo would have cancelled it out, so they'd have lost 42 if they didn't do this deal.

If you look at it as Melbourne getting 42 + the rest of the trade, it's a reasonable deal.
