Underrated post
I reckon Essendon are bloody nuts. Good player yes, but he is 30 years old, they will never get more than what he is worth now. They aren't winning a flag before his career is finished. Essendon should be taking a 1st this year and a F1 to help with next year's bumper draft.

I agree that trading Merrett is best for them long term. But they've also got a fanbase who haven't seen their team win a final in 21 years and will only be more frustrated seeing their best player traded to a rival. They need to make sure they're getting a decent return so they can sell it to the fanbase. And then the picks are only useful if they actually get them right, which Essendon haven't in recent times (apart from Caddy).
Some teams can get impatient when they haven't had success for a long time (ours included), but they need to do things the right way and play the long game. Focus on building around and adding to the young players they have now, so they have a bunch of quality players coming through at the same time.
The supporters won't like being told to stay patient, but that's the reality after so many poor draft and recruitment decisions, player development failures and the damage to their culture from the supplement stuff and being unsuccessful for so long.

Yeah, can’t wait for Essendon fans start whinging about demotivated ex captain Merrett going through the motions like Bolton of 2024 for the remainder of his contract.
