I’m more concerned with the clubs obsession with light players

Dattoli is actually quite well built for a kid his size, and Logan came in quite built through the hips (hence his running power).

The game for a period of time (and it's arguable it is still doing so) is moving towards more mobile athletes (people can argue we weren't big enough in 24 but that was more mental capitulation).

I can see why we have built our list a certain way under Longmire, just have to see if Cox has the same philosophy.

I’ve got a good feeling we will get some vintage Charlie.
He stinks of a guy who went stale, lost motivation to do the little things that make greats great.
He will now be highly motivated by a fresh environment coaching/playing, Errol Gulden and a healthy dose of fear of failure.

I’m also most curious how we set up him up with McDonald.

Least he knows where our gym is :)

Yeah, but you can see what the trainer is thinking….

“We have to get those biceps and triceps down, they’re going to kill his endurance. And those hulking shoulders, how am I going slim those down?

“Don’t be silly, stop doubting yourself, look at the rest of the list, you have created the leanest, meanest runners the AFL has ever seen. You can slim this bad boy down”

He needs to be issued with swans kit and wearing the red. Nothing that looks like navy blue. Would he be sponsored by Adidas. Maybe they have something in Swans colours.
He won't grow on me wearing that singlet.
This time last year the boys were running around in maroon.

I hope they are all being issued with red and white kit this offseason!

Maroon of ALL COLOURS! Whoever made that call was really out of touch with how we fans were feeling.

I really liked the Cox quote of something along the lines that, he was doing a Carlton program and now he will have to adjust to our program. It came across like pushing the chest out like our program for recovery and getting him right for the season will be far superior.

Now that I've had time to reflect, just want to spew out my thoughts on the Charlie deal.

I really think we made the right choice here and it's a mutually beneficial thing for both clubs.

We needed some muscle and marking presence in the forwardline who can actually kick goals. And we didn't break the bank getting him (he reportedly took a paycut). He didn't cost us as much as Buddy, which is a relief. And the salary cap is higher since then.

I'll echo Paul Roos's sentiments that picks are a bit overrated. So I'm not too miffed about us giving away our first picks. Roos also said it was basically a lottery after the first 3-5 picks anyway.

As far as Florent and Hayward go, I desperately wanted to get rid of Hayward anyway as I saw him as useless and cost us too many games. And Florent stuffed up too much for my liking. I know they have their supporters on here, and I know they did some good things at times, but I think they were just really mediocre players who Longmire was overly loyal to and I'm glad they've been taken off our books. And since Carlton are so crap, they'll probably be their new star players. I wish them well.

In terms of marketability, Curnow will put asses in seats and benefit our club financially.

The combination of Gulden and Curnow will be very, very good. And if teams decide to double team Curnow, that'll open up space for players like Papley and Amartey.

I'm glad the club recognised that what we were doing didn't work in Grand Finals and we've made moves to address it.

Have we ****ed things up? Time will tell. But I think we've done alright here. High risk, high reward. That's business.

Buddy retired at the end of 2023 and we've been trying to land another key forward ever since, which was the right move, because Amartey, McDonald & McLean weren't going to get the job done (for a variety of reasons, injury being one of them).

Getting Curnow is absolutely the right decision. Whether it works out is a different story, but Curnow was the perfect target. He cost us a fair bit, but we probably would have blown those first round picks anyway.

Agree with everything you've written here except your thoughts on Will and Ollie, but that's my personal thoughts only, as they were two of my favourites. Trading them was definitely the correct and logical thing to do from the clubs perspective.
Fact is, we had to improve our list and that's exactly what's been done, time will tell if we've made the right moves.

Spotted at Tramway Oval 8am this morning by himself and a big bag of footies. Seems like he's up for it...

You don't come back from several years out and win multiple Coleman medals without having an appetite for training.

That being said, I can see him adding a bit extra not to prove people wrong (Carlton were desperate to keep him), but to prove himself to his teammates and also the motivation of potentially being part of a premiership team does things to you.

As with the Cox mention of now he is with Sydney so he will do it the Sydney way, I would have expected that to be part of the pitch to Charlie to come here.
He wasn't shying away from being at a good club, or to be under a hard coach.
If Cox didn't sell him on, with all due respect to Carlton and where you have been, we will get more out of you if you want it and there are no limits to that, then why recruit him.

This. And let’s not forget he actually has a chance of a flag with us, never with Carlton. His motivation on that alone would be sky high.

I mean yeah, I hear ya. I had my favourites too who weren't star players but did their duties. So I can identify for sure.

But yeah, I dunno, hard decisions needed to be made which meant cutting loose some players that weren't essential. Ideally I wanted Petracca. But hey, Curnow is an alright get.

Absolutely agree. But it's still really comforting to see him in the gym with AFLW players in mid-Oct and doing solo early morning skills sessions with no paparazzi around (especially, without meaning to judge, when Wil and Ollie are still living la vida loca in South America).
