AFLW Adelaide vs Port Adelaide - Round 11 @ Norwood Oval

From the Hawthorn game thread

1st part done - just 5 more to go!

A simple equation to make finals.

WCE win both their remaining games, (v Syd & Carlton)
GWS beat Carlton
Crows beat the Dockers.
Port beat Adelaide, and thrash GWS by about 10 goals.

Would come down to percentage, but we could sneak in, if that happened. Very Unlikely.

Theres other variations, but this is the most probable.

Just finished watching. Wanted to watch without knowing the result. That was awesome! Absolutely commanding performance. Our defensive press definitely made us look vulnerable at the back, but we just owned territory for so much of that game and that 3rd qtr the ball lived in our end. Just such a shame we didn't finish the many chances to ice the game in the 3rd and 4th. Would've picked up the confidence and let us run over them in the last.

Great win though. A real watershed moment for this team to have reached the point of being the best team in the state!

What an absolute joke of a competition. We will miss finals because of a slow start and a hard draw. Easily one of the best 4 sides in it at this point. If they aren’t going to run a full competition just split the thing into 2 divisions so you get to play every team. Promotion relegation set up.

They tried two divisions and that didn't work because the best two sides were in the same division and when it came to the finals Adelaide were virtually gifted a Premiership. No need for two divisions just play a full round of 17 games. The NRL seem to manage it.

The AFL seem reluctant to let the AFLW stand on it's own feet. If they play 17 games it will mean that the season has to start earlier and they appear timid lest interest in women's footy drops off There is also a cost factor and the bean counters at AFL House will also take that into account. The NRL have successfully managed to play the men and women's Rugby League competitions almost simultaneously. This year NRLW women's Grand Final was played as a curtain raiser to the NRL Grand Final in front of 46,000 fans. Brisbane won both competitions.

Be interesting to see how much they get paid. Also there wouldn’t be 46000 there if one of the teams wasn’t in the men’s final directly after.
I’m not sure there is depth for a longer season to be honest. There would be some very average football being played. No point playing their games as curtain raisers to the men’s comp, the games would just get lost in the AFL season.

A 2 div structure would work until they can afford a 17 game season.

That was such an impressive win. We dominated that game and only Adelaide's ability to flood back in the old Craig/Pyke game plan then being given massive latitude to lay on the ball and scrag out forwards (plus our inaccuracy when well on top) saved them from a good old-fashioned English thrashing.

You think back just a few years to the first Showdown where we were belted by 10 goals and couldn't kick a goal. It was despairingly bad. But we've reeled them in each year even though they've looked better. But this game was all ours, we matched their intensity and pressure and after a slowish start dominated the game.

Even the last quarter which caused a few heart murmurs was at worst 50/50, they took their chances courtesy of some soft frees (which were never paid our way) and we kept missing. Even when we did kick a goal they took it off us with a free to the crows despite their best efforts to turn our forward line into a sludge with their tactics.

It is disappointing that we will probably miss finals, but we did a fair bit of damage to ourselves losing to Freo and St Kilda and of course the umpiring howler against Geelong. Plus a raft of injuries that were critical in a short season. We've had to nurse Lauren Young into AFL footy, and never even saw Jemma Charity who we drafted with the Ewings pick.

But on the flipside we have so many good young footballers who have announced themselves to watchers of the game.

*PS just saw they won the free kick count 19-17 even though we dominated the game. This umpiring.

Sarah Goodwin played well last night.

She’s a Crow through and through and would’ve never wanted to be at Port, but she was a loss for us.

I'm hoping we can lure India Rasheed over to her beloved club. She has some serious skill and composure.

Crows announcer, Crows kid presenting medal - me thinks they were expecting a Crows win

...and we were described as the "visitors" go suck a phat one. Simeon Thomas Wilson's article in today's paper was

shamelessly biased. Crows did this that but Power eventually fell over the line 'spose they had to win one eventually.

Sneering little pissants

Loved that we didn't take a backward step when the half time siren blew and there was a bit of push 'n shove. There was a group of Port supporters in the Norwood members' stand up on their feet as the girls walked off. Loved it. Was good to feel a bit of passion again.
